Creative and imaginative ideas were brought to the forefront in a hands on workshop on ‘Preparing Educational Toys for Children’ organised in the Department of Human Development, Government Home Science College on April 15, 2024. Mrs Paramjit Kaur, a subject expert working in collaboration with the Department of Education and SCERT- 32, Chandigarh was the resource person. She highlighted about the significance of toys especially puppets in inculcating moral values and good habits in children. She demonstrated innovative methods of preparing stick and cloth puppets using easy and cost effective materials available at home . The workshop ignited the creative streak among students who prepared wonderful and colourful stick and cloth puppets for children. Students thoroughly enjoyed the hands on experience and participated in the workshop with great zeal and enthusiasm. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal appreciated the efforts of the department and insisted that college provides a wonderful platform to students through such workshops as it ensures experiential learning amongst students. She further emphasised on the significance of using educational toys as fun and productive method of teaching children.
Government Home Science College organized a free Multi-speciality Health Camp in collaboration with Fortis Hospital, Mohali. The camp was conducted with an endeavour to provide the students and staff with an access to expert medical consultations and guidance across various specialties including Physiotherapy, Internal Medicine and Gynaecology.. The camp witnessed a footfall of approximately 100 participants. They availed the benefit of free consultation, Blood sugar testing and other vitals checking. The health camp featured a distinguished panel of doctors. Patients had the opportunity to interact with these specialists, receive personalized advice, and gain insights into managing their health conditions effectively. Dr. Manjeet S. Trehan, with over three decades of experience in cardiology, shared his knowledge on various aspects of heart health, while Dr. Sunita Chandra, gynaecologist, provided valuable insights into reproductive medicine. Additionally, Dr. Priyanka, an expert physiotherapist, offered guidance on restoring mobility and function through evidence-based treatment methods. The health camp aimed to raise awareness about prevalent health issues and empower individuals to take proactive steps towards better health and well-being. Participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to consult with leading medical professionals and gain valuable insights into managing their health effectively. Dr Sonia Gandhi, Senior Dietitian at Fortis Hospital, Mohali also visited the campus and interviewed various students for providing internship and placement opportunities to the students. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, expressed gratitude to the visiting doctors for their dedication and commitment to contribute to community health. She commended their efforts in providing quality healthcare services and encouraged attendees to take their advice seriously and prioritise their health.
Government Home Science College, Chandigarh, hosted an enlightening workshop on Food Innovation ,Analysis, and Patenting for Start-ups.. The workshop was organised by Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Placement cell with the objective to give insights to the students about product development, types of sources of finance available for entrepreneurs, how to get your business registered and patented. The workshop is sponsered by Centre of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB) and Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS). Approximately 100 Graduate and Postgraduate students from various disciplines of Home science participated in the workshop, which provided a platform for learning, collaboration, and inspiration.The workshop witnessed engaging sessions led by two distinguished speakers, Dr. Meena Krishania and Dr. Vipasha Sharma. Dr. Krishania, a seasoned Scientist from the Center for Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing Center, Mohali, shared her expertise in Chemical engineering, Bioenergy, andIndustrial Biotechnology. She delved into the intricacies of idea generation, product development, and the critical process of patenting, captivating the audience with her insightful presentations.Dr. Vipasha Sharma, founder of startup Mkelly and Mushfit, and Professor from Chandigarh University, took the audience on a journey through her entrepreneurial endeavours. She shared her firsthand experiences of how she has been manufacturing various highly nutritive food products and other itemsfrom , cordysep milletaries. She also highlighted the challenges and triumphs of launching and sustaining a startup in the competitive landscape. Dr. Sharma also shed light on various startup schemes and incubator centres, empowering students with the knowledge and resources to kickstart their entrepreneurial journey.
The event served as a catalyst for innovation and collaboration, inspiring students to harness their creativity and passion for science towards creating impactful solutions in the realm of food technology. The workshop culminated with a heartfelt expression of gratitude from the Principal of college, who extended sincere thanks to the speakers for their visit. To focus upon capacity building and equip the students with a hands on skill training experience, college organised a 5 day workshop in collaboration with Singer India Pvt. Ltd.On the concluding day, an interactive session was organised on "Advance VersionStitches" machine wherein students got an opportunity to work on the machine for their articles under supervision. Consequently, students created beautiful motifs with multiple colour stitches.The entire 5 day workshop using live demonstrations, enabled the students to understand the intricacies of modern sewing machine installation and operation, gaining invaluable hands-on experience.From basic stitching to complex embellishments, students explored the art of combining stitches to elevate their creations.The workshop fostered an environment of innovation and collaboration, allowing participants to exchange ideas and techniques. Highlighting the culmination of their efforts, students proudly displayed their crafted products ranging from elegant garments to decorative home décor articles.Principal, Prof Sudha Katyal extended heartfelt thanks to Singer India Ltd. for their valuable support in organizing the workshop. Prof. Katyal also appreciated the efforts of students in designing various products and encouraged them to gain maximum from such opportunities to foster innovation and entrepreneurship.
Third day of Workshop on Modern Sewing Techniques in collaboration with Singer India ltd. started with great enthusiasm among students at Government Home Science College, Chandigarh. Students of B.Sc. (Fashion Designing) designed & constructed sustainable home decor articles like cushion covers and table runners etc. along with stitching of tote bags and one piece dresses with highly equipped machines provided by Singer India ltd.The highlights of the fourth day of workshop was the garment construction segment, where students brought their creative visions to life. Students meticulously crafted pieces that reflected their unique personalities and aesthetics. Equally impressive was the embellishment segment, where participants learned how to elevate their creations with intricate details and embellishments. Using various stitches, students demonstrated their mastery of decorative techniques, transforming ordinary garments into works of art. Participants expressed eagerness to apply contemporary knowledge in their creative pursuits with each passing day.Mr. Amandeep Singh, Sales and Marketing Incharge, Singer India Ltd. appreciated the students and encouraged them to produce more creative articles.Prof Sudha Katyal, Principal of the College, applauded the initiative from Singer India Ltd. in organizing the workshop and their dedication to fostering skill development and innovation among students. Day 2: From understanding fabric properties to employing various seam finishes and embellishments, the second day of the workshop focused on the techniques of repairing and up-cycling the garments using various machine stitches. Participants also delved into the intricacies of sewing machine operation, fabric selection, and pattern reading, learning to master basic and advanced stitches while honing their skills in garment construction. They also learned some basic techniques of finishing like hemming and pico with the help of a machine.Through hands-on demonstrations and personalized guidance, participants practice techniques such as sewing with knits, inserting closures, and troubleshooting common issues, empowering them to create professional-quality garments with finesse. Students were made aware with the use of various sewing machine accessories also.The Principal of the College, Prof. Sudha Katyal, expressed admiration for efforts put in by resource person in imparting extremely helpful sessions and giving wonderful tips on up-cycling the garments. She also emphasized that the workshop aimed to celebrate this timeless craft while embracing modern innovations and techniques.
In a bid to empower aspiring fashion enthusiasts with contemporary sewing skills, Home Science College inaugurated a five-day workshop from April 04-08, 2024 focusing on modern sewing and embroidery techniques. The workshop was organized in collaboration with Singer India Ltd. by Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Placement Cell of the college. The main objective of the workshop was to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and proficiency in the ever-evolving landscape of fashion design and garment construction.Approximately 40 students from B.Sc. Fashion Designing participated in the workshop. On the first day of the workshop, students learnt about installing various machines and working with different kinds of stitch lengths. Furthermore, they were made aware about assembling various parts of the machine including changing the bobbin case and needle and threading the machine on the top. Moreover, the Singer India ltd. sponsored 5 latest fully automatic sewing machines along with two training instructors to provide hands-on training to students. Students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop.The Principal of the college, Prof Sudha Katyal, strongly advocated that such workshops not only contribute to individual empowerment but also serve as catalysts for economic growth and innovation in the broader context of the fashion industry. In a remarkable display of talent and prowess, students from Home Science college secured accolades at the prestigious Inter-State IT Fest organized by PGGCG-42, Chandigarh on April 03, 2024. This event brought together some of the brightest minds from various educational institutions across state borders, showcasing their skills and innovation in the realm of Information Technology.Among the noteworthy accomplishments, Livjot from B.Sc. final year clinched third position in Extempore and Chahat and Samridhi from B.Sc. first year bagged second positions in Rangoli competitions respectively. Their dedication, hard work, and innovative approach were evident throughout the event, earning them well-deserved recognition. The commendable achievements of our students underscore not only their exceptional abilities but also the high standards of education and training imparted at our institute. Amidst fierce competition, our students emerged victorious, showcasing their expertise in a diverse array of IT-related domains.The Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, extended her heartfelt congratulations to the winning students for their outstanding achievements. ‘A Week Long Annual Placement Drive’ begins today at Government Home Science College. Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Placement Cell of the college organised this drive from April 02- 08, 2024. More than 150 present students and alumni of the college registered for the event and participated enthusiastically. Reputed organizations in the field of Human Development and Clothing and Textiles visited the campus to provide placement and internship opportunities to students.Pre-placement talks were conducted by institutions such as State Council of Education Research and Technology (SCERT), Bachpan NGO, Sifaaz Foundation (NGO), IDP education consultant, National Association for Blind and Arya Hospital, De-addiction Centre, Hara Designs, Fabbat Boutique and Active Clothing Private Limited before the final round of interviews. 40 students secured internships and 10 students advanced to the final round in the department of Human Development.
The college proudly welcomed its alumna Ms. Navpreet Gill, a Fashion influencer and co-owner of boutique Fabbat. Ms. Gill shared her journey of success, highlighting how her education and background in fashion designing contributed to her achievements. She offered internships to 5 students and pre-placement offers to 2 students from Clothing and Textiles, providing valuable insights into the interview process.Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal encouraged students to actively participate in such placement drives, emphasizing the need to bridge the gap between academia and industry and groom students according to marketplace demands and equip them with the necessary skill set.
In an era where sustainability is paramount, Home Science College is going to organize the launch of a groundbreaking Zero Waste Design Workshop from April 2 to April 06, 2024. This workshop represents a bold step towards fostering environmental consciousness and innovation in the field of fashion and design. The college recognizes the urgent need to address the environmental challenges facing the fashion industry and is dedicated to empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills to effect meaningful change. The resource person for the event was Ms. Kirti, Assistant Professor from UIFT and VD, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The target participants were students of B.Sc. Fashion Designing. The rationale of the workshop was to facilitate students with the latest techniques used in sustainable fashion practices and minimal waste techniques. It will also serve as a platform to explore creative solutions that prioritize both aesthetics and environmental responsibility.
On the first day of the workshop, Ms. Kirti demonstrated how to create stylish garments without generating waste and empahsized the importance of environmental consciousness in fashion design. This was followed by an interactive session wherein students applied these principles to design their own zero waste garments using paper. Day:2 - Home Science College's Zero Waste Design Workshop continued to inspire and empower participants on its second day, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainable design principles and techniques. Building upon the foundation laid on the inaugural day, the workshop delved into advanced concepts and practical applications, further igniting the passion for eco-conscious fashion among attendees. On the second day, the session commenced with an engaging Eco Printing activity, which saw enthusiastic participation from the students. Under the expert supervision of Ms. Kirti, Assistant Professor from UIFT and VD, Panjab University, Chandigarh, the students engaged in discussions about their chosen zero and minimal waste design techniques. She provided invaluable assistance in creating garment layouts, ensuring each student’s design adhered to sustainable practices. A series of one-on-one conversations allowed for a deeper understanding of zero and minimal waste design principles. Each student had the opportunity to express their approach to garment construction and receive personalized feedback on their preferred techniques. The day concluded with students being assigned to finalize their garment layouts and begin the process of fabric preparation, incorporating surface ornamentation. This hands-on approach not only equipped the students with practical skills but also instilled a sense of responsibility towards eco-friendly fashion.

Govt. Home Science college celebrated World Water Day on 22 March 2024 focusing on the theme ‘Water for Peace.’ This day aims to raise public consciousness about the importance of freshwater and the necessity to protect it. The first World Water Day was celebrated in 1993. It was first proposed at the United Nations (UN) conference on environment and development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and has been celebrated annually on 22 March since then. Every year the UN releases its World Water Development Report on or around this date. To mark the celebrations, Intra-college Poster making and Slogan writing competitions were organized for the students on the theme ‘Leveraging Water for Peace.’ The competitions received entries from more than 50 students. Pooja from B.Sc. H.Sc. 2nd sem won 1st prize, Vaghmare Shruthi from B.Sc. H.Sc. 4th sem won 2nd prize, Mehak from B.Sc. H.Sc. 2nd sem won 3rd prize and Shweta Sharma from M.Sc. FN 4th sem won Consolation prize in the competition. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, motivated the students to adopt water conservation strategies in our daily life and to create awareness about the same.
Govt. Home Science college celebrated International Forest Day on 21 March 2024 with the focus on the theme 'Forests and innovation: New solutions for a better world.' The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of forests and trees and to promote the sustainable management, conservation, and development of all types of forests for the benefit of current and future generations. Intra-college Poster making and Slogan writing competitions were organized for the students on the theme ‘Forest and Innovation.’ Students wholeheartedly participated in the competition and more than 50 creative entries were received for the same. Bishnu Kumari from B.Sc. FD 2nd Sem won the 1st prize, Avantika Sood from B.Sc. H.Sc. 6th Sem won 2nd prize, Yashi Mehrotra from B.Sc. H.Sc. 4th sem won 3rd prize and Vidhi Sharma from B.Sc. H.Sc. 4th sem won Consolation prize in the competition. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, motivated the students to plant more trees in our daily life which in longer run will help in saving our forests.
As a part of the Government’s key initiative “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan”, the VADA Club of the college conducted Valedictory function today under the able guidance of Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal to mark the conclusion of various activities organised during the session 2023-24.Mrs. Prabhjot Kaur, Nodal Officer (Drug Abuse), Department of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development, Chandigarh Administration was the Chief Guest for the event. The event commenced with lamp lighting ceremony and a welcome song by students followed by reflections on the activities conducted during the session 2023-24 by VADA Club of the college. Prize Distribution Ceremony was also conducted wherein thewinners of various competitionsi.e. Essay Writing, Slogan Writing, T - Shirt Painting and Poster Making were felicitated.Furthermore, Mrs. Kaur enlightened the students regarding ground realities related to drug abuse. She elaborated on various reasons of youth getting into substance abuse and the role of drug de-addiction & rehabilitation centres. The Department of Foods and Nutrition at Home Science College celebrated Poshan Pakhwada aimed at enhancing awareness and promoting hygiene practices within the college community. As part of this initiative, a workshop for appropriate hygiene practices was organized specifically for the mess workers and canteen staff of the college.The workshop, held on March 19, 2024, witnessed active participation from the students of M.Sc. Foods and Nutrition 4th semester, who took charge in demonstrating the pivotal role of hygiene and sanitation practices in food handling and preparation. Various aspects including the importance of wearing lab coats, gloves, and head covers, as well as the appropriate method of handwashing, were meticulously elaborated upon. Furthermore, the session delved into efficient methods of storing perishable and non-perishable foods, alongside innovative approaches to utilizing leftover food effectively.The Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, appreciated the students for their exemplary demonstration. With the goal of promoting positive mental health among students, ‘A week long anti drug abuse campaign cum valedictory’ for students begins today at Government Home Science College, Chandigarh.In this context, under the able guidance of worthy Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, various theme based activities have been planned like yoga & meditation, awareness lecture on drug abuse, poster making & slogan writing, poetry recitation, essay writing, street play and t-shirt painting from March 14-20, 2024 by the VADA (Victory Against Drug Abuse) Club of the college.On the first day of the campaign the students were highlighted about the significance of various asanas and kriyas. Students performed different asanas whichincluded Tadasana, Vrksasana, Padahastasana, Ardhacakrasana, Trikonasana, Bhadrasana, Sasankasana, Vakrasana, Makarasana, Pavanamuktasna, Savasana and Kapalabhati along with explaining the importance of each asana. Around 100 students participated in the session. Participants thoroughly performed various asanas as demonstrated and the session brought a breeze of freshness amongst them. The session has significantly contributed in reducing stress, embracing positivity and increased concentration among students.Prof. Sudha Katyal, Principal of the college applauded the efforts of studentsand urged them to participate with great zeal in all the activities throughout the week. She further emphasised that Yoga is a spiritual practice thatwill help them to stay balanced, calm and peaceful.Also, it will further help them to reduce anxiety levels thereby enhancing their confidence.
The Science Club 'Pragya' of the college organised Science Fest on March 13, 2024 on the theme 'Global Science for Global Well-Being'. Sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology and Renewable Energy, Chandigarh Administration, U.T. Chandigarh, with a grant of Rs 30,000, the fest provided a platform for students to showcase their ingenuity and talents in the realm of science and technology.Various events included Science Quiz, Scientific Rangoli, Poster Making and T-Shirt painting competitions. More than 100 students participated from various colleges across the city including DAV College- Sector 10, Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector-26, Post Graduate Government College- Sector-11 and Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11 to name a few.In poster making competition, Khushi (B.Sc. Fashion Designing 4th Sem) from GHSC-10 bagged first prize. While in T-Shirt painting competition, Sharishti (B.Sc. Fashion Designing 4th Sem) from GHSC-10 bagged first prize and in Scientific Rangoli Competition, Shivangi Singh and Sajjan (BA 2nd Sem) from PGGCG-11 bagged first prize. In Science Quiz competition, Poonam Bhardwaj, Kanishka Chadha and Ekjot Kaur (B.Sc. ATD semester VI, played as part of the Chandigarh Rugby Women’s team in Div.2 Rugby 15's Senior National State Championship held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha (March 04, 2023 to March 10,2023).The team secured First position and grabbed goldfor Chandigarh state.Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal commended the students on their achievements.

Decked out in elaborate costumes, students brought characters from movies, TV shows, books, and video games to life, captivating onlookers with their attention to detail and dedication to their chosen personas. The event provided a platform for students to express themselves creatively while celebrating their favourite characters and stories. As the day unfolded, the campus buzzed with excitement as students paraded in their meticulously crafted costumes, each one a testament to their dedication and creativity. From elaborate costumes with intricate props to simple yet effective ensembles that captured the essence of beloved characters, every participant added their unique flair to the event. Awards were presented to the standout participants in different categories, including Best Overall Costume (Jiya from B.Sc. Fashion Designing (Sem II)), Most Creative Costume (Muskan from B.Sc. Home Science Sem II), and Best Group Costume(Srishti, Ananya, Khushi, Anjali, Ishika, Aanchal and Ranjana from B.Sc. Fashion Designing Sem IV). The budding entrepreneurs of Government Home Science College showcased their talent and skills by putting up stalls of a various innovative items at Rose garden and Leisure Valley in 52nd Rose Festival held from Feburary 23 to Feburary 25,2024. The students exhibited and sold exquisite products related to what they learned in the college. In rose garden, the students of Clothing and Textile displayed variety of articles including tie and dye products, table mats, cushion covers, dupattas, bags, dresses using reusable material, various mini gardens beautifully curated using waste materials while giving a message of sustainable living.In leisure valley, the stall of the college witnessed brisk sales where the students exhibited and sold handmade paintings, hand painted bedsheets, curtains, shagun envelopes, mandala art paintings, candles,crochet items, bakery items, etc. Handmade paintings of Mandala art were a huge attraction to the visitors. Foreign tourists appreciated the art and handmade work of the students and even purchased the paintings, keeping the spirits of the students high.The students also displayed many fun psychological games which were enjoyed by a large number of people in the fest. A hand made photo booth was also kept by the students where people clicked pictures and appreciated the efforts of the students. Handwriting analysis by the students proved to be hit among visitors visiting the stalls. Moreover, a diet counselling and healthy snack corner was also set up. The healthy snacks included millet laddus, bakery items etc. Tattoo making was major attraction for kids. The students also put up hair braiding stall and styled the people over there.
Principal of the College, Prof. Sudha Katyal also visited the stalls and highly applauded the collaborative efforts of the students and faculty members. She added that this kind of hands-on experience can be incredibly valuable for future careers of students, as it helps them develop real-world skills and entrepreneurial mindset. It also provides them with a platform to showcase their talents and potentially generate income from their creations.
Students of Government Home Science College, Chandigarh showcased outstanding performances in Science cum Cultural Fest. Over 20 students actively participated in "BioRythm - 2024," organized by GGDSD College in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology and Renewable Energy, Chandigarh Administration held from February 28-March 01, 2024. The event aimed to commemorate National Science Day along with fostering awareness about recent advancements in science and technology and further promoting an appreciation for Indian culture amongst students. Our students participated fervently in various activities, earning accolades for our college. Notably, Bhanu, a 3rd-year B.Sc. Home Science student, secured first position in the Start-up Idea competition, while a team comprising Livjot and Pawandeep, both from 3rd-year B.Sc. Home Science secured second position. Government Home Science College organised 57th Annual Athletic Meet with great zeal and fervour on February 27-28, 2024. The two day sporting event began with inauguration by Prof.Sudha Katyal, Principal of the College, followed by the unfurling of the college flag and oath taking ceremony. The event began with the marching of coordinated footsteps of students in the parade led by the Under Officer Parade Commander Poonam Bhardwaj and Sports Captain Gurjot Kaur. The lighting of the Presidency Torch was carried by sports stars of the college, Kashish (B.Sc. H.Sc. 2nd Year) Chanda Kumari (B.Sc. H.Sc. 3rd Year), Kirti (B.Sc. H.Sc. 3rd Year) and Arsya Kirpal (B.Sc. H.Sc. 1st Year). The day was filled with fervour and excitement. Ms. Chetanpreet Kaur Nilon, an International Sportsperson (Rifle Shooting Sport) was the chief guest for the final day. Ms. Nilon represented India in Asian Games (China), World Cup (USA), Asian Championship (Malaysia) and World Championship (Finland), Olympic Hopes Shooting Competition (Germany and Czech Republic). Furthermore, she has been a National Gold Medalist twice, National Games Medalist thrice and National Record Holder. Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal gave a floral welcome to the chief guest.Students enthusiastically participated in various track events and races viz. 50mt., 100 mt., 200 mt. and 400 mt. relay races ; long jump, discus throw, shot put throw, javelin throw etc. and fun races like three legged race, sack race, lemon spoon and tug of war etc.
The most enchanting show was presented by tiny tots of Chaitanya Laboratory Nursery School. Furthermore, impressive performances of Yoga, Aerobics and Bhangra dance by the students kept the audience enthralled. The chief guest congratulated the prize winners and motivated the students to perform with same zeal, commitment, discipline, hardwork, positive attitude and fervour in all future endeavours. She appreciated the Principal and her team for putting up a great show. Kashish of B.Sc H.Sc. IInd Year was declared as the Best Athlete. Victory Against Drug Abuse (VADA) Club of Government Home Science College, Sector-10, Chandigarh organised awareness rallies on ‘Say No To Drugs’. Keeping in mind the growing menace of drug addiction, awareness rallies were organised to spread the message of drug abuse and its ill effects so as to make our country drug free. Students sensitised auto drivers, road side vendors and locals about substance abuse and ways to get rid of this menace thereby leading towards its eradication from society. Students raised slogans holding posters on the theme ‘Say No To Drugs’. Interestingly, auto drivers and road side vendors promised to make their contribution in pulling out their dear ones from the addiction of drugs. They also pledged that they would help in eradication of drugs in all forms.The awareness rallies were carried out in Sector 15, Chandigarh and Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh on 26.02.2024 and 29.02.2024 respectively.Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal appreciated the efforts of VADA Club ingenerating awareness towards this social menace. She also emphasised that youth being the largest force of our nation is becoming victim of drug addiction which will certainly have a bad impact on the society. Sadly, it will certainly affect their health and life as a whole. Therefore, it is the need of an hour to sensitise youth through organising such rallies about the harmful effects of drugs.
Government Home Science college participated in 52nd Rose Festival organized by Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh wherein students exhibited their creative potential as a budding entrepreneur. The 52nd Rose Festival was held at Rose Garden and Leisure Valley, Chandigarh from 23.02.2024 to 25.02.2024.Students displayed a plethora of articles such as dresses made from sustainable and environment friendly materials, hand made & painted bags, handmade soft toys, millet based healthy recipes, hand crafted dupattas, handkerchiefs, paintings, hair accessories, masks, table-cloths, hoops, chains , room hangings and decorative items along with fun psychological games and tests assessing personality. Stalls on hand writing analysis, fun psychological games and diet counselling received an overwhelming response as students experienced a brisk sale of their products.The rationale was not only to provide a launchpad to the students to showcase their talent but also to accelerate the idea of 'Make in India'. College, being an incubation center, has always promoted and encouraged students to showcase their skills and be self-reliant.Principal, Prof Sudha Katyal emphasized on the dire need to inculcate the initiatives of Make in India and Atma Nirbhar Bharat. She also appreciated the efforts put in by the students and faculty and further encouraged them to work towards skill enhancement and make the most of such platforms provided by the institute for their benefits.

Government Home Science College, Chandigarh in collaboration with Traffic Police, Chandigarh organised an ‘Awareness Workshop on Road Safety & Traffic Rules’ on February 15, 2024. The team from Traffic Police, Chandigarh comprised of Sub Inspector Bhupinder Singh, Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajender Singh and Senior Constable Rajiv, appraised NSS volunteers about the rules and regulations pertaining to road safety, traffic rules, driving license, wearing helmet, seat belt, road signs and drunken driving. Sub Inspector Bhupinder Singh enthralled the students by singing songs on awareness of traffic rules and regulations.In the concluding session a quiz contest was held in which the students answered questions correctly and were given mementos by worthy Principal of the college, Prof.Sudha Katyal along with theteam of Chandigarh Traffic Police.The session proved successful inspreading the message of safe driving.Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, emphasised about the importance of road safety and highlighted on the fact that road safety measures must be taken seriously so as to save lives, prevent accidents and injuries and keep a society functioning in the most optimal way.
The students of Government Home Science College put up a number of stalls of skilled items to show case their start-up activities learnt during their course in 13th Panjab University Rose Festival, Chandigarh as a part of 'Earn While You Learn' initiative. Rose Festival was inaugurated by Prof. Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The students of B.Sc Home Science showcased the display of handwork items with a professional touch like quilling boxes, earings, keychains, photo frames, wall hangings, lampshades, glass items, canvas paintings, fabric items, decorative bottles, paper bags, shagun envelops and homemade chocolates etc. under the leadership of Mrs. Seema Jaitly. The stalls received tremendous response at the event.The stall proved a big hit among the young crowd of the festival. A tattoo making stall was also put up by the students. Government Home Science College, Chandigarh organised a lecture on empowerment of girls under Project Kartavya, 2023 on 08.02.2024. Mr.Vikas, Resource Person highlighted about the struggles women face right from the beginning. He further emphasised that Girls empowerment is the need of the hour because it is high time we value and credit girls for their contribution and help them grow. Around 50 NSS Volunteers attended the lecture.Principal of the college, Prof.Sudha Katyal emphasised that girls empowerment can only be achieved through educating girls. Education is a great tool to empower women as it will bridge all gaps in our society. She further concluded that through education girls will be able to achieve sense of self-worth, ability to determine their own choices and the right to influence social change for themselves and others.
Three days Entrepreneurial and skill development workshop organized by Innovation Entrepreneurship and Placement (IEP) Cell of Govt Home Science College, in collaboration with Regional Centre for Entrepreneurial Development and Sachtek Foundation concluded today on 8th February 2024. Mr Harjinder Singh Cheema, owner of Cheema Boilers Limited was Guest of Honour. He enlightened the students with his challenging entrepreneurial journey and encouraged students to think positively no matter how many challenges they face in life. He talked about how success and failure are part of life and how important it is to plan ahead for one’s future.
Mr Cheema shared that dreaming big and converging business idea into plan is pre-requisite for becoming a successful entrepreneur. He added that perseverance, hard work and confidence are essential traits of an entrepreneur. During this 3 day workshop, students were apprised with numerous important government schemes for budding entrepreneurs. Earlier on second day of the workshop, Mr. Satwinder Singh from Sachtek Educational Society elaborated on the MSME initiatives and various associated schemes, providing attendees with practical tools and resources. To provide experiential learning to students, a live recipe demonstration of an Italian dish risotto was given by Chef. Jaswinder and his students Simar and Mudit from University Institute of Hotel Managemen, PU, Chandigarh. They demonstrated a modified version of the recipe by adding millets into it and replacing it with some core healthy ingredients. They sensitized the students about millets and their importance. The concluding day witnessed distribution of certificates to the participants by Mr. Cheema, Mr. Paramjeet Singh from RCED, Mr. Davinder Singh and Mr. Anil Kumar from DIC Chandigarh. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal motivated the students to be innovative and to take on challenges as luck favours those who help themselves. She was elated at the enthusiastic response given by the students in attended this workshop. She added that such workshops are need of hour to broaden the horizons of the students and make them Atam Nirbhar.

The Innovation Entrepreneurship and Placement (IEP) Cell of Government Home Science College organized a three-day workshop on entrepreneurial and skill development, which was commenced today, i.e., on 6th February 2024. This workshop is being conducted in collaboration with Regional Centre for Entrepreneurial Development and Sachtek Foundation, which is their parent concern. Mr. Paramjit Singh, Director of the Regional Center for Entrepreneurial Development (RCED), visited the college to enlighten the students on entrepreneurship, emphasizing the essential qualities, qualifications, and perspectives required for success. He addressed various challenges and queries related to entrepreneurship, guiding students towards skill development and fostering an entrepreneurial mindset. He also emphasized that skills and hard work can help the students to be the world leaders and marked entrepreneurship as the key to being self dependent. Approximately 100 students and faculty members of the IEP cell actively participated in this workshop. This workshop is further lined up with various activities for the skill development of the students for next 2 days. Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal conveyed her appreciation to Mr. Paramjit Singh for his insightful session and urged the students to refine their entrepreneurial skills through these programs.
Meditation sessions were organized by Brahma Kumaris from Rajyoga Bhawan, Sector-15, Chandigarh on January 29 -30, 2024 to conclude the ongoing yoga & mediation camp under Victory Against Drug Abuse (VADA) Club of Government Home Science College,Chandigarh. Brahma Kumaris, Sister Preeti & Sister Shobhika reminded the students about the innate goodness of the individual. The sessions highlighted about the difference between body & soul and brought into limelight the three important faculties of soul i.e. Mind, Intellect and Impression. Furthermore, the sessions emphasized on the embodiment of seven virtues i.e. Knowledge, Purity, Peace, Love, Happiness, Bliss and Power. The sessions were interactive and included fun activities for the students in which they were taught various techniques to balance their mind and thoughts so as to prevent them from taking drugs.Principal of the college, Prof.Sudha Katyal applauded the efforts of VADA Club and insisted on the significance of meditating regularly. Students performed different asanas which included Tadasana, Vrksasana, Padahastasana, Ardhacakrasana, Trikonasana, Bhadrasana, Sasankasana, Vakrasana, Makarasana, Pavanamuktasna, Savasana and Kapalabhati along with explaining the importance of each asana. Around 57 students attended the session. Participants thoroughly performed various asanas as demonstrated and the session brought a breeze of freshness amongst them.

Interactive sessions for students and parents were organised by Victory Against Drug Abuse Club (VADA Club) of Government Home Science College, Chandigarh on January 24, 2024 at Dainik Bhaskar Colony, Sector-25 and on January 27, 2024 at Bapu Dham Colony, Chandigarh respectively. More than 330 students & parents participated in the sessions. The primary objective of conducting these sessions at Dainik Bhaskar Colony and Bapu Dham Colony was to cultivate awareness regarding the detrimental effects of drug abuse on the younger generation as these places falls under the most sensitive areas with regard to drug use & abuse. Students along with the nodal officer & co-ordinator of VADA Club actively participated in direct interactions with local residents & parents to address concerns related to drug abuse. They observed a nonchalant attitude among the residents of these colonies towards hookah consumption, with many attributing it to be a part of their cultural and religious rituals.
Also, the students went door to door and interacted with parents to generate awareness regarding various types of drugs and their harmful effects and further suggested them to spend quality time with their children and generate awareness regarding the same.Principal of the College, Prof. Sudha Katyal highly appreciated the efforts of the VADA Club in generating awareness amongst the people about drug abuse and its deleterious effects on holistic development of an individual. She also emphasised the need of such interactive sessions as these help in informing and educating the community especially the youth who are more vulnerable. She further insisted that if people know about it, they will be cautious and contribute in beating this evil.
On the auspicious day of 26 January, 2024, Government Home Science College celebrated 75th Republic Day filled with a feeling of patriotism and dedication. The celebration started with the hoisting of the National Flag by the Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal. It was followed by the recitation of the National Anthem. The college campus turned reverberated with the rhythmic vocal performances presented by the students of the college. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal shared the historical past of the Republic Day with students. She further addressed the staff and students and inspired them to do their best and feel proud to be an Indian and highlighted the significance of India being a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic. The program concluded with the message to create a great nation through collective efforts from all individuals.

Host of activities like Poster Making, Slogan Writing and Awareness Rally on the theme ‘Nothing like voting, I vote for sure’ were organised. A Voter’s Pledge was also taken along with the song in the background ‘Mai Bharat hoon’ to mark the occasion. Awareness rally was conducted in Raipur Khurd, Tribune Colony, Chandigarh to sensitise general public about the significance of voting. Government Home Science College, Chandigarh participated in a Walkathon organised by Shankhnaad Organisation, to celebrate Ram Mahotsav on January 20, 2024. The walkathon flagged off at 07:00 A.M. from Rock Garden Parking to Sukhna Lake Club, Chandigarh. During the walkathon, the NSS volunteers enthusiastically chanted uplifting slogans in the honor of the revered SHRI RAM JI, creating an atmosphere of unwavering devotion.
