Government Home Science College, a premier institute of the city, has lush green campus which is sprawled over 17 acres with 2, 79, 919.00 sq. ft. built up area. It is endowed with well-manicured lawns, spacious lecture theatres, smart classrooms and State of Art laboratories which makes the workplace more conducive and eco-friendly for the teachers as well as students. Situated in the midst of the city on Madhya Marg, the institute lies in close proximity to Panjab University, Chandigarh as well as office of Directorate of Higher Education, Chandigarh, and ensuring seamless execution of all academic and administrative operations.
College is committed to the sustenance and promotion of an environment, favourable to the growth and development of an academic excellence, satisfying contemporary women’s professional and specialized needs. It has achieved the prestigious NAAC A++ grade in the recent assessment in August, 2023 bythe National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). This remarkable accomplishment reflects our unwavering commitment to excellence in education and our relentless pursuit of academic and institutional advancement. The NAAC A++ grade acknowledges our continuous efforts towards holistic development, innovative teaching methodologies,research excellence, and effective governance. It is a recognition of our collective vision to create a conducive learning environment that fosters intellectual growth, critical thinking and entrepreneurial skills among our students.
The college has maintained its legacy of excellence by securing 52nd rank at National Level and topped amongst all the colleges in Tricity, fifth time in a row, in NIRF India Rankings released by Ministry of Education, GOI. For rankings, colleges were evaluated on the parameters of Teaching Learning and Resources, Graduation Outcome, Perception, Outreach and Inclusivity and Research and Professional Practice. The college has featured among the top 55 colleges of India in the last two years and top 100 colleges in the last five years consecutively. It is the only college in Tricity which could achieve such a distinguish feat. This recognition stands as a testimony to the skill oriented education, cutting-edge research and innovation based courses provided by the college for the holistic development of the students at large.
In consonance with the guidelines of National Education Policy 2020, the vision and mission of the college is to equip the students with market driven skills, focus on research and nurture innovation to develop an entrepreneurial ecosystem. The rationale is to bridge the gap between skills required by the industry and the skills students acquire during their academic training in the institute. The college’s undergraduate, post-graduate, and diploma courses are designed to meet the marketplace’s challenges, demands, and changing technologies. The curriculum of the college addresses specialized professional needs of contemporary women by enhancing their higher order cognitive capacities, critical thinking and fostering the unique capabilities of each student.
These different areas of specialization also concentrate on providing suitable training to the students for various job opportunities. The trained graduates and postgraduates are absorbed as dietitians in hospitals, industrial units, hotel industries, and health/ fitness clubs. They also work as special educators, teachers, counsellors, sales managers, apparel & interior designers, consultants and field workers in extension education and community development programmes. Thus, Home Science empowers women at personal, professional, social, entrepreneurial and economic fronts.
College is an approved Research center for Ph.D. in Home Science and envisages a robust ecosystem for promoting research and innovation. In this direction, the college has set up a New Multimedia Research Block, E-Pathshala, E-lounge, State of the art Laboratories and Fully Automated Library with access to e-journals.
The participative and experiential pedagogy is an integral part of the teaching learning process wherein the faculty integrates heterogeneous/innovative teaching methods such as hands on skill training, internships, field visits, and research work. The process results in creating an ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship. To make young generation more imaginative, innovative, ingenious, proactive, pioneering, prospect oriented, college continuously strive towards developing entrepreneurial abilities by motivating the budding entrepreneurs to undertake their own start-ups. Students are given full assistance to prepare, produce, sell and nurture their micro enterprises. In this direction, the college has installed a Swavalamban Corner – a first of its kind on the campus for display and sale of student’s products. Thus, keeping in mind the goals of NEP 2020, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship remain at the heart of all such activities.
The College also runs a laboratory Nursery School, Chaitanya, with 75 students on rolls, under the Department of Human Development to impart practical training to its students. The other major departments of Home Science are also having well-equipped State-of-the-Art laboratories.
The beautiful spacious college and hostel buildings offer a peaceful, serene yet stimulating environment to the students. The college has rich indoor and outdoor sports and fitness facilities which cater to students of all aptitudes and abilities. The faculty comprises of highly qualified and experienced members, instrumental in imparting a high standard of education to its students. The faculty also participates in national and international conferences, seminars and workshops. They are also contributing in various technical and professional bodies related to Home Science.
The college offers facilities for academic excellence, cultural enrichment and physical fitness of the students to build a multifaceted personality and prepares them to face the challenges that lie ahead. The institute aims to prepare young girls into a skilled human resource with rich moral and social values who can give their best for the national development.
In keeping up with the Sustainable Development Goals of United Nations (2030 Agenda), the institute has made efforts towards creating environmental consciousness and sustainability. College also works intensively in advocating, supporting and promoting GOIs flagship program like ‘Aatma Nirbharta, Vocal for Local, Make in India and Poshan Abhiyaan’, which are the best practices of the institute, thereby, preparing young girls into a skilled human resource with rich moral and social values to make them employment generators rather than employment seekers.
