Waste to Wow: The Magic of GHSC-10 at the 54th Rose Festival, Chandigarh

The budding entrepreneurs of Government Home Science College, Chandigarh, captivated visitors with their theme “Waste to Wow,” showcasing exceptional creativity and craftsmanship at the 54th Rose Festival held at Rose Garden from February 20 to February 22, 2026.

The students set up vibrant stalls featuring a wide array of innovative, eco-friendly products, reflecting their talent, skill and commitment to sustainable living. Their efforts received high appreciation from Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT Chandigarh, who visited the stalls along with his wife, Smt. Anita Kataria and Sh. Mandip Singh Brar, IAS, Home Secretary-cum-Secretary, Local Government.

Through this exhibition, students presented and sold exquisite handmade products inspired by their academic learning. The Department of Clothing and Textiles displayed a diverse collection of items rooted in traditional and contemporary art forms. The initiative aimed to revive and promote heritage crafts such as Pattachitra art of Odisha through wall paintings and Warli art of Maharashtra through beautifully designed handbags and sling bags.
The exhibition featured a rich variety of handcrafted items, including wall hangings, mirrors and clocks created using nail weaving, cushions and decorative hoops made with punching embroidery, curtains designed with screen printing techniques highlighting Mughal motifs and functional décor items like indoor plant holders and wall hangings crafted using macramé knotting. Visitors also admired cushion covers adorned with dot mandala art, crochet-based tote bags, keychains and flowers as well as alcohol-printed dupattas and scarves.

In addition, the collection included tie-and-dye products, table mats, dresses and bags made from reusable materials, along with creatively curated mini gardens made from waste, each piece conveying a strong message of sustainability and conscious living.

Handmade paintings by the Department of Fine Arts emerged as a major attraction, drawing significant attention from visitors. The artwork was widely appreciated, with many pieces being purchased, greatly encouraging the students.

Adding to the festive spirit, students also enthralled the audience with lively dance performances making the experience even more memorable.

The Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, visited the stalls and applauded the collaborative efforts of the students and faculty. She emphasized that such hands-on experiences and creative recycling initiatives are invaluable for students’ future careers as they foster practical skills, innovation, and an entrepreneurial mindset. She further noted that such platforms not only showcase talent but also provide opportunities for students to generate income from their creativity.
