Akshay Urja Diwas Celebrated

"Harita" the environment society of Govt. Home Science College ,Sec-10, Chandigarh celebrated Akshay Urja Diwas (in collaboration with CREST, Chd. Admn.) on August 18, 2017. Various Inter-college competitions viz. Poster making, Slogan writing and Eco-rangoli were held to celebrate Akshay Urja Diwas. About 15 institutions/colleges with almost 128 students participated in the competitions.
Also various Intra college competitions like Collage making, Placard making, Slogan writing and Poster making were held during Environment Week celebrations (August 10-18, 2017). About 250 students participated in these competitions. On the concluding day of environment week i.e. August 18, 2017 Van Mahotsava was celebrated by the college staff and students. Shri Rakesh Kumar Popli, PCS, Director of Higher Education was the Chief Guest to grace the occasion. Plumeria rubra was planted by the chief guest and about 140 saplings of other ornamental plants like Bottle plam, Fish tail palm, Plumeria, Murraya, Bougainvillea etc will be planted during the week.
The principal of the college Prof. Sudha Katyal welcomed the Chief Guest and highlighted the activities of the Environment Society of the college and appreciated the participation of students from various colleges. She also thanked everyone for lending unending support and cooperation to the college to make the event a great success as well for connecting everyone with mother nature and contributing to the conservation of environment through the use of renewable energy. She also assured the audience that the college would always strive to make City beautiful, greener and cleaner than before and contribute its bit in bringing required social change.
The college students presented PARYAVARAN GEET AND DANCES depicting the importance of raining season to plant trees and associated cultural richness of our society since ancient times with the changing season. The cultural items also delivered message on GROW MORE TREES and USE RENEWABLE RESOURCES OF ENERGY.
The little angels/tiny tots of the college laboratory school "Chaitanya" also presented a group song highlighting the importance of GROWING MORE TREES.
The celebrations concluded with the prize distribution function. The Chief Guest gave away the prizes to the winners of various competitions.
Chief Guest during his address emphasized on the fact that the covered area of our forests has been reduced by 24 percent in India. He congratulated the 'Harita' environment society for its efforts in contributing towards making the environment more clean and green. Mr. Popli in his speech also appealed every one to adopt one sapling. He also shared his concerns regarding changing quality of life in contemporary times which is resulting in lesser social interactions amongst people in the society. He recommended teachers to impart moral education among students everyday for at least 10 minutes. In his concluding remarks, he advised students to focus on their career, study honestly and to learn something new.
