GHSC-10 Hosts Interactive Session on “Mental Health: Self and Safety”

In compliance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India Order dated 15.01.2026 in the matter of Amit Kumar & Ors. vs Union of India & Ors., Government Home Science College, Sector-10, Chandigarh organized an insightful and interactive session on “Mental Health: Self and Safety” on April 13, 2026.The keynote speaker, Faarika Mehta, District Lead for Plan India’s Adolescents Life Skills Programme, “The Birds and Bees Talk,” addressed students on the vital aspects of adolescent development and mental well-being. The session highlighted key pillars such as building self-esteem, fostering confidence, and addressing common insecurities among adolescents. Ms. Mehta emphasized that a positive outlook and self-assurance form the foundation of sound mental health and contribute to a successful and fulfilling life.Moving beyond the conventional lecture format, the session was designed to be highly engaging and participatory. Through interactive activities, students were encouraged to develop self-awareness and reflect on their personal strengths. A safe and respectful environment was maintained throughout, ensuring students’ privacy and encouraging open dialogue. The session also included opportunities for personal mentorship, where students could seek one-on-one guidance from the speaker.
Participants found the workshop extremely beneficial, appreciating the practical strategies shared to manage personal insecurities and enhance emotional resilience. The session concluded with a collective sense of motivation among students to adopt positive changes and cultivate greater confidence in their personal and social lives.The Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, appreciated the efforts of the NSS Wing for organizing a timely and meaningful session on mental health, describing it as the need of the hour. Adding to her remarks, Prof. Katyal emphasized that mental health awareness must be nurtured as an integral part of the educational environment, not treated as a one-time initiative. She highlighted the importance of creating supportive spaces within the campus where students feel heard, valued, and emotionally secure.
She further noted that such interactive sessions empower students with life skills that go beyond academics, helping them build resilience, emotional intelligence, and self-confidence. Appreciating the resource person, she acknowledged the relevance of the programme in addressing the real concerns of today’s youth and encouraged students to openly seek guidance whenever needed.Prof. Katyal also highlighted that college makes conscious efforts for consistently organizing student-centric programmes that contribute to the holistic development and well-being of students.
