GHSC-10 Organised Awareness Session on Gender-Based Violence at Women & Child Support Unit

Government Home Science College, Chandigarh in collaboration with the Women & Child Support Unit, Sector-17, Chandigarh conducted an impactful awareness session on gender based violence on November 27, 2024 emphasizing the significance of addressing this critical issue in society. The initiative aimed to educate individuals, particularly women and children, about their rights, support systems, and preventive measures against gender based violence. Students from the Department of Human Development visited Women & Child Support Unit and were also guided through the operations of the Unit. The visit showcased the unit's role in handling gender based violence cases, available counselling and rehabilitation services and helplines and complaint mechanisms for victims. Furthermore, the visit also included interactive discussions with the officials regarding understanding of gender based violence, identifying signs of physical, emotional and psychological abuse followed by legal rights and protections of women and children under Indian law. Students of Post Graduate Diploma in Child Guidance & Family Counselling Course from the college highlighted the power of counselling services in sensitizing communities. Emphasis was placed on creating a supportive environment for victims to seek help. The session succeeded in spreading critical knowledge about gender based violence, its implications and available resources.Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal emphasised that such awareness session was a step forward in addressing the pervasive issue of gender-based violence. Such collaborative efforts are essential in fostering a safer and more equitable society. The college plans to organize more such sessions to ensure that the message of zero tolerance toward Gender based violence reaches every corner of the community.
