GHSC-10 Students Gain Clinical Exposure during Visit to Dietetics Department at GMSH-16

Government Home Science College, Sector-10, Chandigarh, organised an educational visit to the Dietetics Department of Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector-16, Chandigarh, on September 24, 2026, to provide students with meaningful hands-on exposure to the practical application of nutrition and dietetics in a clinical setting. A total of 60 students from B.Sc. Home Science and M.Sc. Foods and Nutrition participated in the visit.The visit offered students valuable insights into the functioning of a hospital dietetics department and the vital role of dietitians in supporting patient care and recovery. Students observed various aspects of clinical dietetics, including dietary assessment and planning, therapeutic diets, nutritional counselling and the provision of individualised dietary care according to patients’ specific health conditions.

The students also gained an understanding of the working and functioning of the hospital kitchen, including the importance of hygiene, food safety, systematic meal planning and the appropriate preparation and distribution of therapeutic diets. The interaction with professionals provided students with an opportunity to understand the responsibilities and professional practices of clinical dietitians while bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world healthcare applications.Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal appreciated the initiative and emphasised that such educational visits play an important role in strengthening experiential learning. She highlighted that exposure to professional healthcare settings enables students to gain practical knowledge, develop a deeper understanding of their future professional roles and appreciate the significance of nutrition in promoting patient health and recovery.
