Home Science College organizes Seminar on ‘BIS and Consumer Protection’ 17.03.23

The Consumer Club of Govt Home Science College, sec. 10, Chandigarh, celebrated World Consumer Rights Day by organising a one-day seminar for the students on the topic ‘BIS & Consumer Protection’ on 17th, March 2023. The event was conducted in collaboration with the Consumer Association Chandigarh and Bureau of Indian Standards, Branch Office, Chandigarh. The speakers for the session were Mr Deepak Aggarwal, Joint Director and Head Scientist at Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chandigarh Branch Office and alumna of the college, Mrs Madhu P Singh, Ex-Justice and Advocate, District Court, Chandigarh.The event started with a welcome address by faculty Dr. Shabana Gandhi, who introduced the speakers for the event.The first interactive session was delivered by Mr. Deepak who gave an insight about the responsibilities of BIS in sensitizing the consumer,and its role for the viable development of standardization, marking and quality certification of products. He enlightened the students about the various standards set by the organisation to safeguard a consumer. He also shared insights about BIS app which quickly enables the consumers to check the authenticity of the ISI-marked and hallmarked products and lodge complaints using this app.The session was informative and eye-opener for the audience.
The second session was conducted by Ms Madhu, who shared knowledge about the Consumer Protection Act, the redressal mechanism and the machinery under the act. She emphasised that demanding quality in the marketplace is a consumer’s right. She also informed the students about the process of filling a consumer complaint just with a few clicks. Overall, it was an enlightening session for the students. The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Akshata Verma, faculty Incharge of the subject Consumer Education.At the end of the session, the guest speakers satisfied the queries raised by the audience. The Secretary General of the Consumer Association Chandigarh, Mr DS Virdi and his team felicitated the Guest speakers and Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal with an Award of Honour, for their zeal and effortsin making this seminar a success amongst students. Prof. Katyal, appreciated the efforts of the team members of Consumer Club for organising this informational event on consumer protection and emphasised the importance of ethics in a marketplace.
