World Ozone Day 2026 Celebrated at GHSC-10, Chandigarh

Date: 16 September, 2026

The Environment Society “Harita” of Government Home Science College, Sector-10, Chandigarh observed World Ozone Day on 16 September 2026 under the theme “Global Action for a Cooler Planet - Celebrating 10 Years of Sustainable Cooling under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.” The observance was organised in accordance with the directions of the Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India.World Ozone Day is observed annually on 16 September to raise awareness about the importance of the ozone layer and the need for its continued protection. The 2026 observance is particularly significant as it marks 10 years of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, which was adopted in 2016 and provides for the global phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), while promoting more energy-efficient and sustainable cooling solutions. To engage students in meaningful environmental awareness activities, the Environment Society “Harita” organised a series of activities, including a Slogan Writing Competition, Poster Making Competition and an Awareness Session. Students participated enthusiastically and showcased their creativity through thought-provoking slogans and informative posters highlighting the importance of ozone protection, climate action and environmental sustainability.

Furthermore, Awareness Session sensitised students about the vital role of the ozone layer in protecting life on Earth and highlighted the achievements of the Montreal Protocol in addressing substances that deplete the ozone layer. The session also focused on the significance of the Kigali Amendment, sustainable cooling, energy efficiency and the need for environmentally responsible technologies. UNEP notes that the Kigali Amendment complements ozone protection by addressing HFCs, which are potent greenhouse gases, while encouraging more efficient cooling technologies. Students were encouraged to translate environmental awareness into everyday action by adopting energy-conscious practices, reducing unnecessary energy consumption, supporting sustainable cooling solutions and making responsible environmental choices. The activities reinforced the message that protecting the ozone layer and addressing climate change require collective responsibility and sustained action.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the students and the efforts of the Environment Society “Harita” in organising the programme. She encouraged students to become responsible environmental ambassadors and to spread awareness about sustainable practices in their homes, institutions and communities, contributing towards a cleaner, greener and cooler planet. The programme served as a meaningful platform for students to connect environmental knowledge with practical action and reaffirmed the college’s commitment to environmental education, sustainability and climate-conscious citizenship.
