Aim of NSS

         NSS – National Service Scheme

The overall aim of National Service Scheme is to give an extensiondimension to the higher education system and orient the student youth to community servicewhile they are studying in educational institution. The reason for the formulation of thisobjective is the general realization that the college students have a tendency toget alienated from the village/slum masses which constitute the majority of the population ofthecountry.Theeducated youth who are expected to take the reins of administration infuture are found to be unaware of the problems of the village/slum community and in certaincases are indifferent towards their needs and problems. Therefore, it is necessary to arouse the social conscience of the students, and to provide them an opportunity to work with the people in the villages and slums. It is felt that their interaction with the common villagers and slumdwellers will expose them to the realities of life and bring about a change in their socialperception.

Objectives:

The broad objectives of NSS are to:

(i) Understand the community in which they work

(ii) Understand themselves in relation to their community

(iii) Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process

(iv) Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility

(v) Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems

(vi) Develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities

(vii) Gain skills in mobilizing community participation

(viii) Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude

(ix) Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters

(x) Practice national integration and social harmony.

The Motto:

The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is : ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’.This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. Therefore, it should be the aim of the NSS to demonstrate this motto in its day-to-day programme.The NSS Wing of the college strives to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service, thereby, enhancing the volunteers holistically in all spheres of development.

• It also motivates NSS Volunteers for continuing their selfless service towards community work.

• The volunteers imbibe and inculcate the motto of National Service Scheme, “Not me but you”

• Plans and organizes regular one day camps and seven day special camps in adopted village of Chandigarh

• Two active NSS units (100 NSS volunteers per unit) with trained NSS Programme Officers

• Active implementation of all Government key programs including Traffic Awareness Programmes, Tree Plantation, HIV/ AIDS Awareness, Poshan Abhiyan, Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, Communal Harmony Week, Life Skill Training, National festivals, Digital India Movement, Vigilance Awareness, National Girl Child Day, International Women’s Day, International Yoga Day, Cyber Swachhta, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,Victory Against Drug Abuse,Electral Literacy,Constitution Day,Blood Donation Camp,Swastha Balak Balika Spardha

• Special training for rural associate women workers

• Students voluntarily enroll themselves in the first year for NSS
