Home Science is a unique field of knowledge. Its inter disciplinary approach in synthesizing knowledge drawn from physical and biological sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities has enriched its educational programmes. The different areas of specialization also concentrate on providing suitable training to the students for various job opportunities. Thus, Home Science equips women at personal, professional, social, entrepreneurial and economic fronts. The institute primarily focuses on empowering women and its one distinctive feature is to make them Atamnirbhar by facilitating young and energetic students with the requisite academic and logistical support. College strives hard to create an eco-system wherein the innovative ideas of our budding entrepreneurs are nurtured and given a final shape under the expertise of teaching faculty. To work towards this motive, the college has taken steps in different areas which include:
· The programme outcome of the courses is to create potential entrepreneurs and to generate self-employment among students in sync with theme of Atam Nirbhar Bharat. The curriculum is learner centric and focuses on imparting hands on experiences to students through demonstrative techniques, running of a cafeteria, diet clinic, counseling cell, field visits, internships, fashion shows and event management. These academic initiatives results in Personality enrichment, Entrepreneurial development, Language skill development and Managing abilities of the students.
· Students (Under Graduate and Post Graduate) are given an opportunity to gain practical knowledge on technical know-how of courses through internships. This gives students an opportunity to apply theoretical aspects of the curriculum into practice.
· The College organizes regular webinars and workshops to enhance skill development amongst the students. Budding entrepreneurs learn about the intricacies of the market, financial literacy, digital marketing platforms and acquire market oriented skills. In this direction, our students participated in four days International Virtual Expo Tech4Seva organized by ICMR funded Centre for Innovation and Biodesign (CiBiD) , PGIMER, Chd. under Vijayana Bhartiya (VIBHA) and Unnat Bharat abhiyaan (UBA). The college students put up 6 virtual stalls on the theme of Atma Nirbhar Bharat for promoting innovation, environment friendly and sustainable technologies, affordable health care and technology for good agricultural practices.
· Emphasis is also being laid on developing and enhancing the entrepreneurial skills of the students through establishing linkages with product and service industry. In this direction, Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Placement cell (IEP) acts as an interface between job seekers and job givers.
· The cell regularly organizes Campus Placement Drive, Sustainable Entrepreneurial Initiatives as well as Startup Initiatives.
· To boost the spirits of its budding entrepreneurs and to enhance their creativity, the college and the IEP cell has taken the initiative by offering its laboratories and infrastructure as an incubation and co-working space for or its alumni and students.
· Keeping afloat the spirit of the motto ‘Earn While You Learn’, College organizes Home Science Fest every year in the campus along with other melas and Mega exhibitions. ” In sync with government’s key initiatives of Make in India, Vocal for the Local and Swavalamban Bharat, the rationale of these events is to provide a launchpad for all the stake holders to exhibit their creativity and innovative ideas.
· All efforts were made in the direction of establishing and strengthening linkages & collaborations for mutual benefits & significant outcomes. The college has signed MOU with a number of government and non-government organizations for the mutual transfer of knowledge and expertise. While providing rigorous research based specialization, it also provides opportunities for cross fertilization of ideas for multidisciplinary work among academia, government and industry.
· The college boasts of more than 500 startup initiatives by the students. The students startups have equipped them not only in just expressing their creativity and innovation but also helping them in becoming financially independent. Following are few of our successful entrepreneurs.
• Ms. Namrata M.Sc. CT 2017, runs her own brand by the name BABYROBE by namro. She boasts of more than 68.7k followers on Instagram and makes customized kids clothing for celebrities kids like Neil Nitin Mukesh.
• Ms. Tannu B.Sc. Batch 2021, runs her enterprise by the name SL collections. She has a GSTIN number and is an entrepreneur on the e-marketing platform Meesho.
• Ms. Nidhi MSc CT 2021, runs her enterprise by the name of The Knot Store. She has done up the interiors with her macramé products for The Reef Hotel , Sector 7, Chandigarh.
• Ms. Priyamvada, PGDND, runs her start up by the name Sattvic which is a yoga and Zumba studio which provides exceptional quality sessions and healthy sattvic meal plans to help maintain their physical as well as mental health.
• Ms. Preeti Sharma MSC CT 2021, a fashion designer, has designed dresses for the famous TV serial Udaariyan on Colours Channel.
· To enhance the entrepreneurial skills of the budding entrepreneurs of the college and to provide marketing platform to the innovative products and services of the students and alumni, SIDBI sanctioned a grant of Rs.1.5 Lakhs to setup information kiosk and display cum sale window for in-house marketing through the Swavalamban Corner.
· To further motivate and encourage the spirit and culture of entrepreneurship amongst our students, college has mobilized a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 from a US based NRI, Dr. Narender Kukar for the Best Entrepreneur of the Year Award. This award would be given annually in the memory of his sister Ms. Sinder Kukar who taught in this college from the year 1962-1964.
Sustainable Entrepreneurial Skills beyond College Walls
Not just limited to the walls of the college, opportunities were provided to students to hone their entrepreneurial skills in:
Karva Chauth Event organized by Canara bank, Circle office, Sector 34, Chandigarh (Oct 16, 2019)
Students put up various stalls of handicraft items, nutritious chocolates, mini donuts, healthy muffins, handmade jewelry, Mehndi along with Karwa Chauth special thalis.
Chandigarh Carnival
The students of B.Sc. Home Science showcase and sell handwork items with a professional touch like paper lanterns, quilled articles, painted glasses, handcrafted jewelry, shagun envelopes, file folders, etc.every year.
Panjab University Rose Festival
Students of B.Sc. H.Sc. present an artistic display and sale of handwork with a professional touch like painted pots, dupattas, bedsheet, murals, mirrors, paper bags, file folders, handmade jewelry, candle stand etc. Students were highly appreciated for their efforts by V.C. Prof. Raj Kumar in 2019.
Rose Festival, Chandigarh Administration
Students put up various stalls of nutritious snacks, fun psychological games, textile products, handicrafts, Perfumes, handmade soaps, henna application and tattooing in the Rose Festival held every year.
The institute thus provides a common platform where all the stakeholders viz -viz students, employers, industries, alumni, teaching and non-teaching staff, non-government organizations and government functionaries along with the common masses are benefited.
Hence, such initiatives provide equal learning opportunities to all stakeholders especially women which lead to an empowered nation.
Year 2022

The college organizes mega exhibitions every year in the campus keeping afloat the spirit of the main motto ‘Earn while you learn.’ These exhibitions serves as a platform for students to hone their entrepreneurial skills and first-hand experience of having a start-up. Budding entrepreneurs of college who launch their start-ups in the digital world are encouraged. The college boasts of more than 30 startup initiatives by the students in the last academic year. Students are provided with the platform to expand their network with government as well as non-government organizations. To enhance the entrepreneurial skills of the budding entrepreneurs SIDBI has sanctioned a grant of 1,50,000 to setup the information kiosk and display cum sale window for in-house marketing through Swavalmban Window and social platforms such as Whatsapp, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram are used to sell their products. This will prove to be one-stop shop for generating income by young entrepreneurs and gaining marketing skills. It will also help to provide intensive practical training and support for current students and alumni to refine their business and social enterprise.

Year 2021
The college acted as one stop shop for addressing all needs of Nutrition during PoshanMaah, PoshanPakhwada and PoshanAbhiyan in totality

• NukkadNatak on Nutrition awareness & Dietary consultation at various places Daria, Ramdarbar, Khuda Ali Sher & in the college campus.
• Preparation & Release of Booklet Su-poshanwritten by Prof. SudhaKatyal(Principal) and published by Deptt. of Social Welfare , covering nutritional requirements & low cost healthy recipes was released by His Excellency Hon’ble Governor Sh. V. P. Singh Badnore.
Fashion Show – Aakriti
The college exhibited its fashion show – Aakriti which was planned keeping in sync with global goals of UN (2030 agenda). It revolved around the theme - Khadi for Nation, Khadi for Fashion so as to promote eco-friendly, carbon free, biodegradable and sustainable Khadi- fabric of the future. It provided a grand platform for showcasing the creativity of budding fashion designers, models and entrepreneurs of the college.The goal of this fashion show was to provide an opportunity to the students for start-ups and entrepreneurship.
Home science fest – 2019: A step to encourage Entrepreneurship
The college organisedHome Science Fest on March 8, 2019 in the campus keeping afloat the spirit of the main motto ‘Earn while you learn’.• Skill development• The fest served as a platform for our college students to hone their entrepreneurial skills and have first-hand experience of having a start-up. • Entrepreneurship• Home Scientists as young entrepreneurs displayed their skills and talents by putting up a number of stalls.• Social Awareness• Fest witnessed collaborations with various department like Social welfare deptt UT, Chandigarh, State legal services Authority, Election Deptt and Red Cross Society• Environmental Awareness• The fest also focused on generating environmental awareness by putting up stall on demonstrating eco friendly approaches like composting from waste, natural colours for holi, segregation of watse etc collaborating with Deptt of Environment, UT, Chandigarh.• Empowerment of Women- Psychological, Emotional and financial• The event marked a tribute to empower females and all efforts made by the college through the curriculum, workshops and seminars in helping develop our girl’s entrepreneurial skills. Inter colleges competitions were held on the theme of environment and women empowerment including face painting, rangoli making and slogan writing.• Felicitation of Alumni• Some of the successful alumni such as Cookie Marwaha an established baker, Dietician Shreya who runs 14 diet clinics around India and Mrs. Shweta Khanna owner of Flaunt Couture , a designer clothing brand in Elante Mall were felicitated during the event.• Recreational Activities• The stalls put up by students of various departments showcased their artistic and creative abilities through a variety of creative and eco-friendly products which were indeed a crowd puller.. A very special segment catering to the interest of the kids included a variety of rides and games
