Panjab University celebrated its 70th Annual Athletic Meet that was flagged off on 2nd November. Government Home Science College also participated in the event. The day unfolded with the march past competition among various colleges under Panjab University. Sarmishtha Sharma, the Sports Captain, represented the college with the college flag. The event commenced with zest and passion among the participants and the spectators. A number of events were conducted in the Athletic meet. 7 students from Government Home Science College participated in various events. The students participated enthusiastically with sportsman spirit. The event saw sprightly youngsters giving their best in the quest of glory. Tanishqa, student of B.Sc. H.Sc. 1st semester, participated in shot put, made a maximum of 6.49m and went up to the finals. Sarmishtha, the sports captain of the college, participated in 100m, cleared the heats and went up to the semi finals. Kanika, student of B.Sc. H.Sc. 3st semester, participated in Heptathlon and stood 5th by making 972 points in total.
It was a well-contested meet and excitement prevailed all through. The event concluded on 4th November and yet another fun-filled annual athletic meet of the Panjab University. The Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal encouraged the students and conveyed her appreciation to them for participating in the event.
Govt. Home Science College organized an outreach programme for capacity building of rural associate women workers
Ginger Club of Government Home Science College organized an outreach programme for capacity building of rural associate women workers in collaboration with NSS wing of the College. The session was attended by 50 rural women belonging to nearby rural areas along with the undergraduate, postgraduate students and faculty members of the college. During the programme, postgraduate students of the department of Foods and Nutrition demonstrated low cost nutritious recipes for rural women, which included multigrain tikki, rice balls, vegetable atta momos, Palak Dosa and healthy whole wheat flour banana cake.
An interactive session on Anemia, explaining its causes, prevention and impact on the overall health of the women along with a quiz was also organized by the students. Awareness on nutrition amongst the participants was generated through display of posters and slogans. In continuation to these multiple activities, a session on life saving skills in collaboration with Fortis Hospital Mohali was organized by a team comprising of clinical instructors, Sister Gloria and Sister Jaspreet Kaur and Meena Batta, Marketing Manager. The team demonstrated Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and other Basic Life Saving (BLS) techniques necessary in case of sudden cardiac arrest. The participants actively participated and enjoyed the session.
The session was highly appreciated by the Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal. She motivated the participants to implement the learnings of the day. She also appreciated and applauded the efforts of the faculty members and students for coordinating the events successfully.
Government Home Science College organized a lecture on 'Goods and Services Tax (GST) Simplified' in collaboration with Consumers Association Chandigarh and Consumer Club of the college. Renowned Advocate & Consumer Activist, Mr. Ajay Jagga, sensitized the students regarding the basic concepts and types of GST and its contribution towards the economic progress of the country. He described that a rational tax structure of any country should be like a bee sucking honey without damaging the flower. He also enlightened the students with various provisions of GST like Anti profiteering, merchant rating and feedback system provided under GST. Mrs. Madhu P.Singh, ex Judge Consumer Forum, Mohali, also motivated the students to become an aware consumer. She also satisfied various queries put forward by faculty members and students about GST. Other members who were present there for the event were Brig. J.S.Phoolka, Advisor to Chairman and Mr. D.S.Virdi, Secretary, Consumer Association, Chandigarh along with Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal. The event was appreciated and applauded by Prof. Katyal and the session was concluded with thanks giving note by her along with presenting an award of honour to Mr. Ajay Jagga.
Government Home Science College organized a training program for Rural Associate Women which commenced on November 07, 2017. The concluding day of this 5 days NSS Program began with zest and zeal among the women associate workers. Mrs. Seema Jaitly, Asst. Professor, Government Home Science College, gave a demonstration on different art techniques and also demonstrated the audience on various techniques used for making decorative and household articles from waste. Along with this, the valedictory function was also held with great enthusiasm. Shalu from Khuda Ali Sher village described her experience of this 5 day training camp. This was followed by a dance performance by many other trainee women. Stipends were distributed amongst hardworking rural associate women by Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal. She also interacted with the trainee women workers and appreciated their enthusiasm to learn. A mesmerizing bhangra performance was given by village students. Gifts were distributed among Rural Associate Women Workers by the Principal of the college. The program ended on a happy note. Prof. Sudha Katyal applauded and appreciated the efforts in conducting the event and congratulated the NSS Wing for its success.
An interactive traffic awareness programme was organized in collaboration with the NSS Wing of the college. The traffic police team Mr. Shashank Anand, SSP Traffic & Security Chandigarh , Mr. Grewal, Traffic Marshal & Wing Commander, Mrs. Uma Mahajan, Traffic Marshal along with Mr. Inder Pal Sandhu and Mrs Seeta Devi, Inspectors, were present for the event. The talk highlighted the significance of following traffic rules and regulations while driving. Mr. Grewal revealed the students regarding the statistical data about the number of deaths and fatal accidents occurring each day. The panel discussed various reasons behind occurrence of fatal accidents on roads. The panel reported over- speeding, reckless driving and undisciplined pedestrians as the most important causes for accidents. The audience was made aware of various sign boards, purpose of wearing helmet and also advised students to avoid covering their head and face using a cloth as it leads to decreased vision. The programme was followed by a quiz on awareness of traffic rules. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, urged the students to strictly follow traffic rules so as to save one's precious life.
The 'Ginger Club' of Department of Foods and Nutrition, Government Home Science College, Sector-10, Chandigarh in collaboration with Fortis Healthcare, Mohali organized an interactive session on "Polycystic Ovarian Disorder, Obesity and Endocrinological disorders amongst adolescents" by an expert endocrinologist, Dr. Gagan Priya, today. The session was inaugurated by Prof. Sudha Katyal, Principal, Government Home Science College, Sector 10, Chandigarh. Nearly 75 undergraduate and postgraduate students from department of Foods and Nutrition along with the faculty members attended the seminar. The session was also attended by around 50 rural women belonging to nearby rural areas. Dr. Gagan Priya, emphasized on increasing endocrinological disorders amongst women, since they often ignore their own health and are more subjected to hectic schedules, unhealthy eating habits, poor sleep pattern and more stress. She talked about high prevalence of Diabetes, Polycystic ovarian syndrome and obesity and the interrelation between them. She recommended that prevention can reduce the risk of diabetes and its associated problems like hypertension, cardiac disease, mortality, stroke and kidney diseases. The participants were informed about the role of physical activity and lifestyle modification to prevent the occurrence of these disorders. All the participants enthusiastically interacted in the session and cleared their doubts. The session was very informative and was thoroughly enjoyed by the participants. Prof. Sudha Katyal, Principal, Government Home Science College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, appreciated and applauded the efforts of the department in upgrading the existing knowledge base of the students and faculty.
Second day of the NSS Training programme witnessed an array of talks on various interesting topics. Mr. Davinder Ahuja and Mr. Altaf Husain from a renowned NGO 'Humane Society International India' delivered a talk on care, maintenance and rescue of animals. The audience viewed various videos related to the rescue operations of street dogs and farm animals. In their talk they also stressed upon various drawbacks of eating non-vegetarian foods. During the forenoon session, Mrs Neelam Kumari, Assistant Professor in the department of Human Development & Family Relations focused on parenting skills, gender equality, laws related to children and women for their welfare, engaging children in creative activities and role of parents in children academics. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal also emphasized on the role of good parenting and its contribution in making families happy. She appreciated the whole event and urged the audience to make best use of those strategies which can minimize the gap between parents and their children.
The NSS Wing of Government Home Science College organized an awareness rally as a part of Vigilance Week celebrations as a step towards fighting against corruption.
The rally witnessed participation of a large number of students. The rally was flagged off by the principal of the college Prof. Sudha Katyal in the presence of the NSS incharges Ms. Chaaya and Ms. Seema Jaitley and the accompanying faculty members. The students holding banners, posters, and placards in their hands chanted slogans for generating awareness among the common masses. Before that they actively participated by making beautiful posters and writing motivational slogans against corruption with an aim to spread awareness among people. The rally highlighted and promoted the importance of integrity in all walks of life. The students urged the people neither to give nor to take bribe and adopt any unfair practices. They told them about how corruption has spread its tentacles in all social organizations.
The students also interacted with the common masses and forewarn them about the aftereffects of these serious prevailing issues. The principal of the college Prof. Sudha katyal applauded and appreciated the efforts of the students and encouraged them to actively participate in future as well.
Department of Human Development and Family Relations of Government Home Science College along with NSS Wing of the college conducted a Nukkad Natak as a part of Vigilance week celebrations in the college premises as a step towards fighting against corruption. The mesmerising performance by students highlighted the ill practices taking place in various social organizations.
The Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, teaching and non- teaching staff and the students from all the streams were gathered to contribute their bit in fighting against this evil practice. The street play brought into limelight the rising corruption issues in all the walks of life. The event also portrayed the reasons behind the rising corruption and thereby forewarning the audience regarding the aftereffects of this serious prevailing social issue. It was an inspiring play and left the audience with a message against corruption. The play ended with the applauds and appreciations by the Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal. It was a small step by the students of the college to spread awareness about the high signs of corruption.
Textile week was organized in Government Home Science College by the Panache Club of Department of Clothing & Textiles. Various competitions like embroidering a handkerchief, paper bag making, T-Shirt painting, coaster making and heritage items were held. Students showcased their talent in vivacious areas of their interest. Judgement was done by experts from the field. Principal, Govt. Home Science College Dr. Sudha Katyal appreciated the efforts of the students and motivated them to take full advantage of technical skills being provided to them so as to become successful entrepreneurs in future. 01 Chandigarh Girls Bn NCC, Chandigarh is conducting its Annual Training Camp for the training year 2017-18 at Govt Home Science College, Sector 10, Chandigarh. 400 girl cadets from various colleges and schools of Chandigarh are participating in the event. The ten days training Camp commenced on 30 September 2017 and will conclude on 09 Oct 2017. The Camp is being conducted under the guidance of Camp Comdt, Col Anil Luthra , Commanding Officer of 01 Chandigarh Girls Bn NCC. The unit is grateful to Dr Sudha Katyal, Principal of the Institution for providing the necessary Infrastructural support needed. Military subjects like Weapon Training, Map Reading, Field craft and Battle craft will be taught to them apart from daily physical endurance exercises and Drill. Various competitions in debates, sports and cultural events are also planned in the training Programme of the Camp. The camp intends the overall personality development of the cadets. The Government Home Science College hosted Investiture ceremony of Student Council September 27, 2017. The day began with great enthusiasm among the newly elected young leaders who pledged to serve the college for the ongoing session of 2017-18.
Mr. Vivek Atray motivated the newly elected committee with his words of inspiration. He initiated his talk about the various life skills that one can inculcate in one's life effectively. He emphasized on living in the present moment, keep in mind a bigger picture of life, think positive, bounce back at the time of odds and adversaries and always be thankful to all. All this, according to him, must be communicated too, and for this, communication skills must be mastered. He also made the audience aware of the importance of fitness and following a regime for it. The outstanding orator also spoke to the student leaders suggesting them to adopt people's skills to be able to deal with people and their problems in a right manner. He stressed on various emotionally intelligent leadership qualities such as being decisive, positive, calm, balanced, receptive and being a people's person.
The Principal of the college, Prof Sudha Katyal welcomed the Chief Guest of the day, Mr. Vivek Atray, a Former Civil Servant of a high repute, a well acclaimed author, an outstanding orator. She congratulated the council and spoke about qualities of a good leader. She applauded them for their desire to serve the college and their fellow classmates. She also suggested them to stay humble and grounded and be a true leader who can inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more. At the end, she also expressed heartfelt thanks to the previous council for lending unrelenting support during various college functions and events. In addition to that, she also highlighted that one should be expressive and communicative in order to let out ones worries and concerns. The programme ended with giving away the prizes to the winners of Panjab University Youth and Heritage Festival, 2017-18 followed by thanks giving speech by the student council President Geetanjali.

The second day of the HAPPINESS WEEK witnessed a day full of fun and excitement by the CLOWNS all over the college. The students of the Department of Human Development and Family Relations turned into clowns in colourful and funky outfits with funny and attractive props. They could be seen playing around, and doing pranks with whosoever they met in and outside the rooms and office, Chaitanya Laboratory Nursery School and were busy spreading laughter.The clowning activities started the moment students and teachers entered the college in the morning.The activity broke the monotony of the otherwise busy routine that sometimes take a toll on them. These clowns from B.Sc. HDFR 3rd Semester, M.Sc. HDFR (1st and 3rd Semester) and Post Graduate Diploma in Child Guidance and Family Counselling acted as stress busters for many and in this life, full of hustle and bustle made them realize that life is much more beyond this. Not only the students but even the faculty members of the department and other teachers of the college were seen enjoying with the clowns. The clowns kept the Principal of the college, Prof Sudha Katyal busy by hugging her and making sweet gestures. She appreciated the initiative of the students turned clowns. The activity indeed suggested celebrating each day of life and turning each moment into contagious happiness.
08th September, 2017 marked the celebration of International Literacy Day in Government Home Science College, Chandigarh. With the theme of ‘EACHONE – LIT ONE’ the celebration was inaugurated by the Principal of the college Prof. Sudha Katyal in Chaitanya Laboratory Nursery School along with the Head of the Department Prof. ReetinderBrar and the event co-ordinator Dr.Ravneet Chawla.The students from Post Graduate Diploma In Child Guidance And Family Counselling, M.sc 1stSemester , M.sc 3rdSemester and B.sc Human Development and Family Relations were present during the celebrations and helped in the co-ordination along with other faculty members of the department.The event began with organising an activity ‘MASTI KI PAATHSHALA’ in Chaitanya which emphasized on inculcating good reading habits and telling the little munchkins about the importance of school and education. It also focussed on how school can be fun by making them dance on the beats of refreshing music and playing fun games. These tiny tots were also provided with one batch displaying a message ‘I LOVE MY SCHOOL’ with a motive to inspire them to come to school everyday. The celebrations of the day were segregated into various activities where the Post Graduate Diploma students created laminated ‘VARNMALA’ with associated miniature graphics for self help for domestic workers and need based beneficiaries, M.Sc HDFR 3rd Semester capacitated senior citizens to use news apps in all the 3 languages(Hindi, English and Punjabi) to keep pace with latest trends in contemporary issues with respect to their environment, M.Sc HDFR 1stSemester became the part of ‘SWACH KITAB SEWA’ where the books of the Department were cleaned , repaired and organized and B.Sc HDFR 3rd Semester developed theme based wall magazine. The day long celebrations came out to be a big success with the co-ordination of everybody in the department. As it has been rightly said that “BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD” hence this small step towards literacy at the college level will surely bring change to the entire society eventually. The whole event was appreciated by the Principal, Prof. Sudha Katyal and she also motivated students to instill good reading habits in their free time.
Government Home Science College organized a motivational talk on the theme 'Dream as big as mountains' in lieu of World Sports Day. The speaker of the workshop was a well known World Trekker Col. Aparjeet Nakai. He inspired young gathering of more than 100 undergraduate students. He emphasized that in life anything can be achieved through strong determination, hardwork and will power. He shared vivacious tales of his fascinating mountaineering experiences through motivational pictures and inspired the audience. He also enlightened them with various strategies which are imperative for trekking. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal also encouraged the students to stay fit and adopt all those techniques elaborated by Mr. Nakai and congratulated the staff for holding the motivational talk.
The 'Ginger Club' of Department of Foods and Nutrition, Government Home Science College, Sector-10, Chandigarh in collaboration with Indian Dietetic Association (IDA) Chandigarh Chapter inaugurated National Nutrition week today. The theme of National Nutrition week is "Optimal Infant and Young Children Feeding Practices: Better Child Health".
To mark the inauguration of Nutrition week, a cookery competition on the theme "Innovative Nutritious Tiffins for Pre-Schoolers" was held wherein 75 students participated including participants from GCG-42, MCM-DAV, Dietetics Department of GMCH-32 and GMSH-16, host college and other institutes.
The recipes for cookery competition were judged by Prof.Sudha Katyal, Principal, Government Home Science College, Sector-10, Chandigarh, Ms. Jatinder Sohi, HOD and Ms. Madhu Sharma, President, Indian Dietetic Association, Chandigarh Chapter. The recipes were judged for innovation and relevance to the theme amongst other parameters.

The judges applauded the efforts of participants and entire faculty of Foods and Nutrition department and congratulated the coordinators of entire events, Dr. Nirupa Marwaha, HOD Foods and Nutrition Department and Dr. Ritu Pradhan, Associate Professor and Project coordinator.
"Harita" the environment society of Govt. Home Science College ,Sec-10, Chandigarh celebrated Akshay Urja Diwas (in collaboration with CREST, Chd. Admn.) on August 18, 2017. Various Inter-college competitions viz. Poster making, Slogan writing and Eco-rangoli were held to celebrate Akshay Urja Diwas. About 15 institutions/colleges with almost 128 students participated in the competitions.
Also various Intra college competitions like Collage making, Placard making, Slogan writing and Poster making were held during Environment Week celebrations (August 10-18, 2017). About 250 students participated in these competitions. On the concluding day of environment week i.e. August 18, 2017 Van Mahotsava was celebrated by the college staff and students. Shri Rakesh Kumar Popli, PCS, Director of Higher Education was the Chief Guest to grace the occasion. Plumeria rubra was planted by the chief guest and about 140 saplings of other ornamental plants like Bottle plam, Fish tail palm, Plumeria, Murraya, Bougainvillea etc will be planted during the week.
The principal of the college Prof. Sudha Katyal welcomed the Chief Guest and highlighted the activities of the Environment Society of the college and appreciated the participation of students from various colleges. She also thanked everyone for lending unending support and cooperation to the college to make the event a great success as well for connecting everyone with mother nature and contributing to the conservation of environment through the use of renewable energy. She also assured the audience that the college would always strive to make City beautiful, greener and cleaner than before and contribute its bit in bringing required social change.
The college students presented PARYAVARAN GEET AND DANCES depicting the importance of raining season to plant trees and associated cultural richness of our society since ancient times with the changing season. The cultural items also delivered message on GROW MORE TREES and USE RENEWABLE RESOURCES OF ENERGY.
The little angels/tiny tots of the college laboratory school "Chaitanya" also presented a group song highlighting the importance of GROWING MORE TREES.
The celebrations concluded with the prize distribution function. The Chief Guest gave away the prizes to the winners of various competitions.
Chief Guest during his address emphasized on the fact that the covered area of our forests has been reduced by 24 percent in India. He congratulated the 'Harita' environment society for its efforts in contributing towards making the environment more clean and green. Mr. Popli in his speech also appealed every one to adopt one sapling. He also shared his concerns regarding changing quality of life in contemporary times which is resulting in lesser social interactions amongst people in the society. He recommended teachers to impart moral education among students everyday for at least 10 minutes. In his concluding remarks, he advised students to focus on their career, study honestly and to learn something new.
A vote of thanks was delivered by Mrs. Ranjana Sharma, Convener of Environment Society.
To give a chance to the newcomers of B.Sc Home Science and B.Sc Fashion Designing as well as existing students, to exhibit their hidden talents and strengths, a talent hunt show was organized today in collaboration with FM Radio 93.4. Over 50 enthusiastic students took part in the show and showcased their singing, dancing, mimickery skills among many others. Enthralling performances of the students gave a chance to the mentors to identify potential talent of the students so that they can hone their skills. Principal, Prof. Sudha Katyal gave prizes to the winners and encouraged the students to participate wholeheartedly in extracurricular activities along with academics as they are beneficial for their holisitic development as well as act as great stress-busters. Mrinalini (B.Sc H.Sc. 1st Semester), Nikita (B.Sc H.Sc. 3rd Semester) and Ishita (B.Sc H.Sc. 1st Semester) won First, Second and Third prizes respectively in the category of Music. In solo dance competition, Manisha ((M.Sc H.Sc. 1st Semester) and Kanishka ((B.Sc H.Sc. 1st Semester) won First & Second prizes respectively and Chiwan (B.Sc H.Sc. 1st Semester) and Neha (B.Sc H.Sc. 1st Semester) both won Third prize.
71st Independence Day on 15th August, 2017 was celebrated in the Government Home Science College. Students performed various cultural activities -patriotic songs, dance and skit on the theme. Tiny tots of Chaitanya Nursery School also participated enthusiastically in the celebrations and sang many patriotic songs.
Prof. Sudha Katyal, Principal of the college hoisted the flag and motivated all the students and staff of the college through her speech. She highlighted the contribution and sacrifices of our freedom fighters and appealed everyone to be united to fight against social evils to get complete freedom and extend support in building New India till 2022. She took Pledge along with all the students and staff of the institution towards "Sankalp Se Siddhi " (New India Movement 2017-2022) as a part of our Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi's vision of New India 2022.
NSS wing of Government Home Science Collage celebrated International Youth Day on 12.08.2017. Prof. Gaurav Gaur was the speaker for the day. He gave us a totally different vision of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. He emphasized on the theme Swacch Bharat & motivated all the NSS volunteers to keep the Institution clean and green. He shared many inspirational videos which conveyed very impressive messages for keeping the environment clean. He made the students to rethink the whole idea of a clean India. He emphasized on the importance of not using plastic and polythene bags. In his concluding remarks he considered plastic bags as the culprit and mentioned that if plastic or polythene won't be there, than the issue itself will be solved. He also suggested the audience to tackle the root cause of all those issues which are polluting the environment and requested everyone to implement good practices for making our environment more friendly to live in. His talk inspired all the NSS volunteers to bring their thought into action. Students also took pledge to keep the country and surroundings clean. Principal of the college Prof. Sudha Katyal appreciated the whole event and motivated the students to keep the environment more clean and green.

Continuing Nutrition Education (CNE) was organized by Foods and Nutrition Department, Govt. Home Science College in collaboration with Indian Dietetic Association (IDA), Chandigarh Chapter on the theme 'Sustaining Breast Feeding Together' as part of National Breast Feeding Week. Nearly 100 delegates participated in the CNE. Ms. Sheela Krishnaswamy, National President, IDA was the Chief Guest and Professor Sudha Katyal, Principal was the Guest of Honour. Ms. Madhu Sharma, President IDA Chandigarh Chapter welcomed the guests and delegates. Dr. Chhaya Prasad, Pediatrician spoke on the positive association of breast feeding and intellectual development. Making sure that women breastfeed their children, Mrs. Rama Mahajan discussed the various challenges faced and ways to overcome them. Chief Dietician, GSSH 16, Ms Manisha Arora gave a motivational talk on preparing for successful breastfeeding. The talks were followed by an interactive session in the august presence of Ms. Sheela Krishnaswamy, discussed membership, eligibility and criteria of being a part of IDA. Ms. Sonia Gandhi, Secretary, IDA, Chandigarh chapter and Chief Dietician Fortis Hospital, Mohali delivered vote of thanks. Principal, Prof Sudha Katyal encouraged and appreciated the audience for such enthusiastic participation.
The comprehensive orientation program was conducted to support new students as they begin their journey for undergraduate, post graduate and diploma courses in Home Science College, Chandigarh on July 31,2017.The programme was inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp by Principal of the College ,Prof. Sudha Katyal along with the senior faculty members. Prof. Sudha Katyal instilled confidence among students with her highly motivational address and urged them to follow the path of 3D's i.e. Desire, Dedication and Discipline in their life. She advocated the students to have burning aspiration to succeed and achieve short term and long term goals in life with perseverance and restraint. She encouraged the students to get familiar with the campus and utilize the college resources. She assured the students that she and her dedicated faculty will fully support the new students in adjusting to the college environment and helping them in changing their dreams into reality. The faculty members introduced themselves and gave a brief outline about their subjects and their respective departments. Students were apprised on diverse aspects concerning them like scholarships, fee concessions, anti ragging, examination rules, student elections, NSS, NCC , hostel rules, as well about various clubs like Environment, Red Ribbon , Dramatics, Happiness and Well Being, Ginger etc where they can showcase their talent and make themselves and college proud by participation and winning awards.The programme concluded with taking all the students around the college with the aim of making them acquainted with college departments and infrastructure.
Staff and students of Government Home Science College celebrated Teej. The campus was decorated with buntings, fresh flowers and traditional Punjabi items. Students gave mesmerising performances depicting culture and heritage of Punjab. They took part in giddha, bhangra, mehendi applying and rangoli making. Ms Teej Contest was also organised wherein Navpreet of BSc Home Science II Year, Ramneek, Niharika & Varleen of BSc Home Science Ist Year won various titles as Ms. Punjaban, Best walk, Ms.Personality and Ms.Witty respectively. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal congratulated the students and appreciated them for organising such colourful event.
The 49th annual convocation of Government Home Science College, Sector-10 was held on April 19, 2017. As many as 200 students were awarded degrees. Degrees were conferred upon students from various streams including B.Sc. Home Science, B.Sc. Fashion Designing and Masters in Foods and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles and Human Development and Family Relations. In addition, prizes were awarded for a number of co- curricular activities during the academic session. Students excelling in the field of sports and other literary activities were felicitated. Barinder Shergill from B.Sc H.Sc 6th semester IDRM was awarded the best all rounder student and Alisha from B.Sc Dietetics 3rd year won Dr. Devi's award for being the most compassionate and helping student of the college.
Mr. Jatinder Yadav, Director, Higher Education, Chandigarh Administration was the chief guest. The convocation began with an academic procession led by the Principal Dr. Sudha Katyal and Sh Jatinder Yadav. The Principal Dr. Sudha Katyal read out the annual college report highlighting the major events of the academic session 2016-17. She addressed the students and urged them to be brand ambassadors of Home Science College and encouraged them to achieve their goals with honesty and go on to make the college proud. The chief guest congratulated the prize winners and motivated them to act as functional literates. He also encouraged the students to make best use of this time, make best friends, do something good in life and be a good human being. He also emphasized on setting clear targets and generating entrepreneurial skills which will further help the society in moving further.
On this event under the dynamic leadership of Principal Dr. Sudha Katyal, 2nd edition of newsletter was also released highlighting various activities and events of staff and students during the session 2016-17.
To cutback the increasing incidences of academic anxiety related issues among school children the department of Extension Education of Govt. Home Science College took a stride to study and help students of both rural and urban schools. The students of B.Sc. Home Science Human Development and Family Relations selected two schools each from rural (Khuda Alisher) and urban (Mohali) areas. About 230 students in total of class 8th and 9th were selected for identifying their anxiety level with the help of a standard predefined test. Test was conducted on February 08, 2017 and March 02, 2017 in rural and urban schools respectively. According to test performed students were categorised into five categories of anxiousness. Students who fall in 'very much anxious' and 'anxious' categories were then counselled on March 22, 2017. Rest of the students were given general instructions to combat such issues.
Students of B.Sc Home Science IInd year showcased their year long creative work in an Art exhibit today. With the slogan of "Earn while you learn", they put up beautiful items ranging from decorative pots, handmade flowers, murals, hand painted curtains, oil and water based canvas paintings, posters, clay modelling and paper bags for display as well as for sale. The chief guest for the day Mrs Anju Yadav appreciated the hardwork and efforts put in by the students under the guidance of Mrs Seema Jaitley, Assistant professor, Art Department.Two entrepreneurs, Jasleen and Puneet of B.Sc.(Home Science)IInd year were applauded for their successful art and craft online and offline ventures by the name of Dazzling Crafts. The visiting guests also bought the articles which allured them which boosted the confidence of the young budding artists who showcased their work there.
Students of our college participated in a Dance Competition- "Rhythm of Haryana", organized by "Chandigarh Art Theater", supported by "Art & Culture Affair Department, Govt. of Haryana on the occasion of "World Dance Day", April 29, 2017. They presented group choreography of Kathak (Classical Dance Form) 'Tarana' and have won 3rd Prize.
The need to sensitize rural women regarding family planning and its effect on health motivated the students of Home Science College to initiate an awareness programme regarding this issue. This evangelism was carried out in village Khuda-Ali-Sher on 18th March 2017 by Department of Extension Education. The students of B.Sc.(H.Sc.)( Interior Design and Resource Management stream) 6th semester organised various activities on the basis of observations of survey conducted by them. A skit on importance of appropriate age of both marriage and child bearing was performed. There was an interactive session where information regarding methods of family planning was taught using flash cards. A lecture on myths related to this issue was also appreciated by the local women.
The Clothing and Textiles department of Home Science College showcased the unique and innovative collections created by the budding young designers of the college in an annual fashion show 'Aakriti'. Dolly Ahluwalia, renowned film actor and costume designer was the chief guest and Anju Yadav was the guest of honor. The extravaganza witnessed a wide array of 17 themes ranging from Bohemo-La-Novia to LGBT to Rush Blush.Best collection prize was awarded to Preeti, Veenita and Shivani of B.Sc. (Fashion Designing) 6th semester for their tantalizing drapery accentauated with sparkling sequins on the theme 'Masquerade'. Scintillating Gaiety collection conceptualised by Ekta, Payal and Jaskirat of B.Sc. (Fashion Designing) 6th semester was declared the most wearable collection. Mrs. Dolly Ahluwalia appreciated the efforts of the talented students and motivated them to extend their creative horizons and excel in their chosen field.The audience was enthralled by the fascinating magical presentation of luxurious and flowing fabrics highlighting the amalgamation of ethnic and modern culture.
Home science girls enjoyed a brilliant day of fun and competitiveness on March 20, 2017 when 52nd Annual Athletic Meet was held at Home Science College. The sporting event was inaugurated by Dr. Sudha Katyal, Principal of the College followed by the unfurling of the College Flag and oath taking ceremony. The gathering began with the marching of coordinated footsteps of students in the parade led by the Sports Captain, Sarmishtha. Torch was lighted by Amandeep Kaur, Jaganjot Kaur, Kanika Lubana, Suraksha Narang, Anjana, Roopa and Samiksha Jha of B.Sc. (Home Science) 2nd and 4th semester.
Mrs. Jatinder Rai, President, Home Science College Alumini Association, was the chief guest for the occasion. Dr. Katyal introduced the chief guest and florally welcomed her. Students, teaching and non- teaching staff enthusiastically participated in various throw, jump, and track activities. Sarmishtha Sharma of B.Sc. (Home Science)4th semester was declared the best athlete followed by the various competitions. The chief guest congratulated the prize winners and motivated the students to come forward and participate in sports so as to keep physical side in concord with the psychological health. The function concluded with the flag retreat ceremony and giving away of vote of thanks by Dr. Ravneet Chawla, the sports Incharge.
The department of Extension Education of Govt. Home Science College, Sector-10, Chandigarh, organized an awareness programme on March 16, 2017, in village Khuda- Ali –Sher. Principal Dr. Sudha Katiyal initiated awareness movement towards cashless society in tune with digital India movement carried out by Govt. of India.
Information regarding different modes of digital payments was disseminated among the villagers like demonstration on use of ATM and mobile payment applications. An awareness rally was carried out by students of B.Sc. Home Science Semester VI (ATD stream) with their faculty Mrs. Shalu Gupta for motivating local people to enthusiastically incorporate the digitalization in their day to day life.

The department of Family Resource Management, Government Home Science College, Sector-10, Chandigarh, held an Annual Exhibition on March 09, 2017. The exhibition was inaugurated by Ms. Sadhna Savgar, Joint Director Higher Education and an eminent artist. The exhibition displayed vibrant creative landscapes and innovative accessories made by reusing different materials. Theme based table decorations were also eye catching. The highlight of the exhibition was the ambience of the trendy cafe based on Social Media theme. Students of Interior Designing put up a lot of efforts in creating the setup. Principal of the college, Dr.Sudha Katyal and the chief guest highly appreciated the efforts done by the students.
The placement cell of the college in collaboration with Bulls Eye and Chandigarh Management Association (CMA) conducted a Young Managers Contest in the college premises along with Women's day celebration. The purpose of organizing this contest was to provide a platform to young budding managers to exhibit their talent, knowledge and creativity in preparing them to become "leaders of tomorrow". The second stage of the contest will be the Inter-college finale in which the winning teams from different colleges will compete. The students keenly participated in the contest and were happy to receive prizes for the answers they gave during the quiz. Prof. Nirupa Marwaha who took the initiative for the event thanked the organizers and encouraged the students to actively participate and make full use of the placement drives organized every week in the college.
Department of Extension Education of college carried out an awareness programme in adopted village Khuda-Ali-Sher on 'Awareness about Anaemia' on 2nd March 2017.On the basis of the survey conducted, the students of B.Sc. (H.Sc.) VIth semester Dietetics stream with their faculty Mrs. Shalu Gupta, carried out the programme. A rally was organised to aware the village mass. Women were invited to participate in the programme where a skit was performed to motivate them to get their Hb test done. An interactive lecture was delivered and demonstration of various iron rich food recipes was performed. Home visits were also conducted for those who were not able to come to participate in group. Efforts of students were very much appreciated by the women folk of the village and the students were also asked to conduct more such programmes.
Arushi and Samiksha students of B.Sc.(H.Sc.)-IV Semester actively participated in the inter-college Antakshri Competition for Rose festival organised by Municipal Corporation Chandigarh on 19 February,2017. The students were accompanied by Dr. Priyanka Sharma(Assistant Professor) Department of Music. Arushi and Samiksha successfully cleared the preliminary round of this competition and made their entry to the final round.
