»PRIZES GALORE FOR HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE AT YOUTH FEST (06.10.2018)

The students of Government Home Science College bagged number of prizes in various competitions of Heritage and Theatre on the third day of Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival held at Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector- 45, Chandigarh on October 05, 2018. Amongst Heritage items, Nisha and Kajal Dubey from M.Sc. Clothing & Textiles 1st Semester and Preeti from B.Sc. Fashion Designing 5th Semester bagged First Prize in Dasauti, Khiddo and Phulkari respectively. Shikha from M.Sc. Clothing & Textiles 1st Semester, Nisha from B.Sc. Fashion Designing 3rd Semester and Ramandeep from B.Sc. Fashion Designing 5th Semester secured second positions in knitting, Bagh and Pakhi competitions respectively. In theatre items, Aeshika and Neha Sharma from B.Sc Home Science 3rd Semester bagged 3rd prize in Best Actor and Histronics category respectively. In the category of Mime students of B.Sc. Home Science 3rd Semester won third prize. Prof. Sudha Katyal, Principal of the college, congratulated the winners and highly appreciated the efforts of students and their mentors for their extreme hard work and dedication.



»Home Science Students bagged Prizes in Youth Festival (04.10.2018)

The students of Government Home Science College bagged many prizes in various competitions of Music and Fine Arts held on the first day of Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival held at Dev Samaj College for Women Sector 45, Chandigarh on October 3, 2018. In Music, the college secured IIIrd position in theBhajan category. The Bhajan team of the college comprised of Arpita from M.Sc (CT) Ist semester,Mansi,Samridhi, Rhythm and Mrinalni respectively of B.Sc (H.Sc) IIIrd Semester, Parwaz and Devakshi of B.Sc (H.Sc) Ist Semester. In the category of Fine ArtsRashmita of B.Sc (H.Sc) IIIrd Semester won IInd prize in poster making and IIIrd prize in clay modelingPriyanka of B.Sc (H.Sc) Ist Semester bagged IIIrd prize in Collage making. Principal Professor Sudha Katyal congratulated the winners and mentors of the team.



»POSHAN RALLY AT SUKHNA LAKE BY HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE

A rally supporting the cause of healthy eating under the “Poshan Abhiyaan” was conducted by Home Science College at Sukhna Lake . Participants of the rally comprised of more than 250 resident students, teaching staff, laboratory staff, office staff and support staff of the college.The general public also enthusiastically joined in the celebrations. The activities included tattoo making and face painting by the students on nutrition related themes.

Slogans, banners and placards son theme of Poshan Abhiyaan were displayed and tips on healthy eating were shared with the masses. The nukkad natak put up by the students was appreciated and enjoyed by one and all especially children.

The rally attracted a large number of visitors at Sukhna Lake and helped spread the motto of sahi poshan – desh roshan .

The whole programme will be aired by 92.7 Big Fm. Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal spearheaded and inaugurated the rally and encouraged one and all to be a part of this social cause of spreading the message of eating right and eradicating the malnutrition including anemia.



»PROUD MOMENT FOR HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE

Government Home Science College participated in State level Workshop on Poshan Abhiyaan at PGI . The occasion was graced by His Excellency Honorable Governor Sh. VP Badnore Advisor to Governor Sh. Parimal Rai and Secretary Department of Social Welfare Women and Child Development Sh. BL Sharma . This event marked the convergence of all departments working under the Poshan Abhiyaan .

A booklet entitled “Suposhan” compiled on nutrition containing low cost recipes and nutritional requirements for vulnerable groups by Prof. Sudha Katyal , Principal in collaboration with Social Welfare Department was inaugurated and released on this occasion by Honorable Governor.

Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal was also felicitated for her outstanding contribution towards all activities.Mrs. Namrata Sethi Assistant Professor gave an enlightening presentation on healthy eating practices which was very well acknowledged.

The students of the college performed a Nukkad Natak on nutritional needs through the age groups which was highly appreciated by the Department of Social Welfare and the audience.

Director Social Welfare, thanked the efforts put in by the college in helping make Poshan Abhiyaan a grand success.



»More than 600 participants at Anemia Free Campaign held at Home Science College

Government Home Science College in the wake of the continuing Poshan Maah celebrations today launched a campaign for “Anemia Free Chandigarh” . A host of activities were conducted ranging from nutrition exhibition which included a display of posters and iron rich recipes such as Palak dhokla, Palak patta chart, Poha cutlets and Iron rich ladoos to name a few. Screening and clinical assessment of anemia was carried out by a renowned team of doctors from PGI, Chandigarh led by Dr. Bhavneet Bharti . The campaign witnessed a huge success. More than 600 participants including resident students of 3 different Government Colleges staying in the college campus, staff and support staff of the college, students from nearby villages and Gur Asra orphanage adolescents from Palsora village, trainee women under NULMproject and public from nearby local areas took part in the event. Facility for Oral Health checkup led byDr. Som Banerjee along with his team of doctors from Oral Rehabilitation Centre, Sec 34, was also provided. Post graduate students of the college set up a kiosk providing dietary counselling for anemia and sale of nutritious iron rich snacks.

Shri Rubinderjit Singh Brar Director Higher Education, Chandigarh was also a part of the event and encouraged the efforts put in by the college. Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal spearheaded the pledge along with the participants to eat healthy iron rich diet and spread knowledge about nutritional management of anemia to help make Chandigarh anemia free.

 



»WORKSHOP ON FOOD SAFETY AND ADULTERATION AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE

As part of the ongoing Poshan Maah activities, Government Home Science College organized a one day workshop on FOOD SAFETY AND ADULTERATION Mr. Sukhwinder Singh, Designated Officer Food Safety Administration , GMSH-16 delivered a presentation on importance of eating not only healthy, but safe food as well. He spoke about the role of FSSAI and importance of quality standards. Household methods of testing food adulteration and common adulterants found in food were discussed.

This was followed by a demonstration on adulteration. Food products such as milk and milk products, spices like hing, black pepper, mustard seeds, salt, red chilli powder and pulses such as masoor dal, moong dal were also tested for presence of any adulterants.



»KNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENT OF SAFE FOOD HANDLING PRACTICES AND SLOGAN WRITING COMPETITION

As part of the ongoing celebrations of Poshan Maah , Government Home Science College organised aslogan writing competition for the support staff and women trainees in Fashion Designing under NULMat the college campus. As many as 50 entries were received addressing varied topics of nutrition ranging from healthy eating to food sources and symptoms of public health problems such as anemia.

A quiz competition was also organised to assess their knowledge about food safety and safe food handling practices. Keeping this in mind, a workshop has been planned for the same to ensure intake of safe and nutritious food for one and all.



»SWACCHTA HEE SEVA DRIVE HELD AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE

As part of the Swachchta Abhiyan , the students of Government Home Science College participated in theSwacchta Hi Seva drive. 15 girls from the college carried out cleanliness activities at Bougainvillea Garden and Garden of silence at Sukhna Lake . The prominent monument of Lord Buddha was cleaned by the students and the area around it.

Principal, Prof Sudha Katyal applauded the efforts of the students and urged them to be responsible citizens by ensuring cleanliness in their surroundings.



»Visit to Home Decor Expo -2018 (29 Sept. 2018)

An educational visit to Furniture and Home Decor Expo-2018 was organised by the Department of Family Resource Management for the final year IDRM students, Composite students and 2nd year B.Sc Home Science students on 29th September 2918. This visit helped the students to learn the various modern furniture designs available in the market today. They were able to understand the present needs of the customers in this field. During this visit the students interacted with the furniture and home decor companies to understand the process involved in manufacturing the furniture according to the customers needs. The concept of functional furniture was also displayed. Home accessories made from marble and wood were also displayed. The students enjoyed this visit as it helped them in networking with the industry for job prospects.



»Celebrations - World Tourism Day (27 Sept. 2018)

On the occasion of World Tourism Day 27th September, the students of Govt. Home Science College, Sector-10 bagged several prizes. Anjuman Brar and Varleen Kaur bagged 1st prize and 1st Consolation Prize respectively in Flower Arrangement Competition. Alka from B.Sc. Home Science (Composite) andAkanksh from 1st Year B.Sc. Home Science participated in Rangoli Competition as a team and and won 3rd prize.



»POSHAN MELA, DARIA, CHANDIGARH

The students of Government Home Science College participated in Poshan Mela held at Daria, Chandigarh organized by Social Welfare Department, Chandigarh . A Nukkad Natak was presented highlighting the nutritional requirements during preschool, adolescence, pregnancy and lactation period. The students gave lecture on food fortification and micronutrients and spread awareness among rural masses and aganwadi health workers regarding foods rich in iron, vitamin A and vitamin B complex. The performance of the students was appreciated by viewers.



»INVESTITURE CEREMONY AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE (18.09.2018)

Investiture ceremony of the Student’s Council was held on September 18, 2018. The day began with great enthusiasm among the newly elected young leaders who pledged to serve the college for the ongoing session. In the recently held elections, Anjali emerged victorious in the race for the post of President Akanksha as the Vice-President and Agam Hira was elected as secretary cum treasurer of the college. The members of the council took an oath to work towards upholding the values of integrity, discipline and morality and to commit themselves to serve the institution as well as fellow students.

Prof Sudha Katyal, Principal, congratulated the council and spoke about qualities of a good leader. She applauded them for their desire to serve the college and their fellow students. She also suggested them to stay humble and grounded and be a true leader who can inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more. At the end, she also expressed heartiest thanks to the previous council for lending unrelenting support during various college functions and events.



»Best Tashanbaaz from Government Home Science College (16.09.2018)

Government Home Science College organized Talent Hunt in collaboration with 93.5 RED FM on 28/08/2018 where Akanksha Rakheja secured first position and then she was selected for the final round in Inter colleges Tricity competition held at V.R Punjab Mall on 16.09.2018. She has been adjudged the best tashanbaaz of the city where she performed “Hulla-hoop” which facilitated her to be amongst one of the top ten performers after competing with numerous participants coming from different colleges of the tricity and various neighbouring universities like Chitkara University, Baddi and Rajpura, Chandigarh University, Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Landran and Government College, Sector-1, Panchkula. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal appreciated and congratulated the student on her brilliant performance as she brought laurels to the institution.



»NUTRITION AND HEALTH MELA AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE

Government Home Science College organized a Nutrition and Health Mela to generate and promote awareness regarding wholesome Nourishment for good health to reduce stunting under nutrition and anemia among young children, adolescent girls and women. It was organized in collaboration with NSS wing of the college and Department of Foods and Nutrition with an aim to spread nutritional awareness, provide nutritional counseling, help in health assessment and health check – up. About 400 people from different colonies and rural areas of Chandigarh attended this Mela in the college premises. It comprises of tiny tots of Chaitanya Nursery School, their parents, rural women attending DAY-NULM free training in Fashion Designing and Rural Associate Women workers attending the 5-days training programme in the college.

Highlight of this Mela was Nukkad Natak focusing on Nutrition at various stages of life cycle. It was beautifully put up by college girls and was really successful in generating nutritional awareness right from conception till adolescent period in a very effective manner.

It was followed by Health check –up conducted with a team of doctors and paramedical staff from Fortis Hospital. Dr. Esha Arora , internal medicine specialist, and her team conducted general health screening, measurement of Blood Pressure, height and weight measurement and BMI assessment. Post Graduate Dietetics Students of the college also held a Diet Clinic.

A Dental health check up was carried out by Dr. Shivani and Dr. Hardeep K. Chawla in collaboration withOral Rehabilitation and Implant Centre, Sec-34 C, Chd.

A team of students studying P.G. Diploma in Dietetics also conducted an awareness programme at composite anganwadi building Ramdarbar Chandigarh in collaboration with Social Welfare Department, Chandigarh .

From today, NCC wing of the college also started Swachta Abhiyan.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, highly appreciated the efforts of the students and faculty members for the conduct of Nutrition and Health Check-up. She encouraged students and staff to continue with such efforts for improving the nutrition and health of the masses.

 



»Students attend Career Awareness talk on “Entry as an officer in Indian Air force” (14.09.2018)

As an initiative towards career awareness and placement, more than 20 students of B.Sc (H.Sc), M.Sc(H.Sc), and Post Graduate Diploma from various streams attended the motivational talk on “Entry as an officer in Indian Air force” held at D. A. V. College sector 10, Chandigarh on Sept. 14, 2018 in collaboration with Director Higher Education and Employment Exchange, Chandigarh administration . The event was inaugurated by Sh. Rubinderjit Singh Brar , Director Higher Education Chandigarh, along with the Wing Commander Sh. M. R. PandyaMr. Manish Sabharwalex- NDA officer addressed the students about the various career opportunities particularly for women in the Indian Air force. He talked about bridging the gap between the students and the armed forces and informed the students about various entry tests conducted by the Indian air force from time to time. Later, the enthusiastic students were seen interacting with the officials present to have an in-depth knowledge about plethora of opportunities available in the forces. The students of the college were accompanied by the faculty members Dr. Shabana and Ms. Heena.

Interactive Session on Nutrition During First 1000 Days at Government Home Science College (September 11-15, 2018)

As a part of the continuing celebrations of Poshan Maah, various activities were conducted at Government Home Science College in the second week of the month. An interactive cum discussion session was held on nutrition during the first 1000 days of life. Nearly around 130 rural women from different villages which includes 75 rural women attending Free Skill Development Programme in Fashion Designing in the college and 60 Rural Associate Women Workers from from 3 different villages Khuda Ali Sher, Khuda Jassu and Kaimbwala, Chandigarh (UT) from September 11-15, 2018 attending the 5 days training programme in the college under the NSS Scheme of the college, were part of the event. All the rural women were sensitized about the importance of good nutrition. Topics focusing on Poshan Maah theme ranging from composition of balanced diet with special emphasis on vulnerable groups such as infants, preschoolers, adolescents, pregnant and lactating women were discussed using audio visual aids such as power point presentation and flashcards.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal addressed the women workers about the â€˜Poshan Maah’or the month dedicated to Nutrition. She emphasized about the importance of good nutrition and balanced diet. She also focussed on prevalence of Anaemia amongst women and need to overcome the same. She further motivated the women workers to attend the camp with full spirit.



»PRIZE WINNERS OF HEALTHY RECIPE PREPARARTION COMPETITION

Undergraduate and post graduate students of Govt. Home Science College, Chandigarh participated inHEALTHY RECIPE PREPARARTION COMPETITION organized by Max Super Specialty HospitalMohali. Nearly 40 students prepared healthy recipes for two categories pre schoolers (6-18 months) and schoolers (18-36months). All the students were highly appreciated by the judges.

»Talent Hunt Cum Teej Celebartions (29 Aug 2018)

Talent Hunt Competition:

"Talent Hunt Competition" was organised for the fresher students in collaboration with Red FM Chandigarh. The participants danced on traditional and Bollywood songs. Girls performed bhangra and giddha. Many students participated in poem recitation in Hindi and English language. Some students also participated in singing competition and mesmerized the audience with their melodious voice. One of the fresher student also performed a hola-hoop dance which was enjoyed alot by the audience. On the whole, the environment was full of festivity and zeal.


Teej Celebrations:

Teej refers to the monsoon festival observed particularly in western and northern states of India. The festival celebrates the bounty of nature, arrival of monsoon in India. It marks the beginning of the festive season with social activities, rituals and customs. To celebrate this festival and make students aware of its importance "Teej Celebrations" were organized by the Department of Family Resource Management in Government Home Science College. The auditorium was decorated with flowers and rangoli. To put up with the tradition of enjoying swings, students also put up a swing at the entrance of the hall. The students and staff members worn traditional attires to celebrate this festival. Mehendi and braiding competition was also organised for the students. For this, a braiding and mehedi corner was decorated with traditional furnitures and furnishings to with the occasion



»CELEBRATION OF POSHAN MAAH

Government Home Science College observed Poshan Maah as declared by honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi considering the importance of nutrition during various stages of life cycle. The theme of the event was ‘Ensuring Focused interventions during the first 1000 days of the child: Better Child Health’ .

As the first part of the ongoing celebrations, a demonstration and a quiz was organized. Both these activities were conducted 50 women from villages adjoining Chandigarh. Low cost high energy nutritious recipes included categories for all age groups such as infants, preschoolers, adolescents, pregnancy and lactation. Few of the recipes demonstrated to the participants included Palak Halwa, Spinach Rolls, Multi-grain Nutritious Momos, Soya Cutlets popular amongst both adults and adolescents age groups. Various variations were also demonstrated. Weaning foods such as Ghia and Pumpkin Soups were also included in demonstration. All the recipes were highly appreciated by the participants.

To generate awareness a Quiz on the theme ‘Better Child Health’ was organized. The participants actively participated and gained knowledge on this theme. The activities were organized under the guidance and directions of Prof. Sudha Katyal, Principal of the college.



»INTERACTION CUM LECTURE DEMONSTRATION BY YSNA AWARDEE DIVYA GOSWAMI DIXIT

Government Home Science College, Chandigarh in collaboration with Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY) organized a Kathak Dance Workshop , Interaction cum Lecture Demonstration on theme ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ by Nrityangana Divya Dixit .

Divya Goswami Dixit stands today as an artist anchored to the roots of traditional dance forms. Multifaceted, her passionate appreciation of traditional art forms has led her focus her talent in dance, art, drama and creative therapy. Her compositions are steeped in deep understanding of history, mythology and spirituality. In essence today, she harnesses her talent to express the art forms in a meditative performance of dance. Her dance performance led the audience spell bound. This was followed by interactive sessions with the students.

At the end,Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, appreciated the dance performance of Divya Goswami Dixit very much.



»BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF MAJOR DHYAN CHAND CELEBRATED (29 Aug 2018)

Government Home Science College celebrated National Sports Day on August 29, 2018, to commemorate the birth Anniversary of Legendary Hockey Player of India Major Dhyan Chand by organizing Interclass Badminton Championship.

The event commenced with great zeal and fervor among the students. Participation was reported in large number by the students. The Badminton Championship included both singles and doubles. About 70 girls participated in singles while 30 girls volunteered for doubles. All the girls participated with full sportsman spirit and unity. Participants also included the Teaching and Non- Teaching Staff of the college. All impressive performances by the students and the faculty members (teaching and Non- teaching Staff) kept the audience enthralled.

The Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, congratulated all the winners and encouraged more of such participation by them along with their regular courses. She also appreciated the efforts of the organizing team for the conduct of the event and applauded all the participants for their outstanding performances.



»VAN MAHOTSAV AND FINALE OF AKSHAY URJA CELEBRATIONS (August 14 – August 23, 2018)

Government Home Science College celebrated Akshay Urja Week through Inter college competitions from August 14 – August 23, 2018, in order to sensitize our young generation regarding the need of harnessing renewable sources of energy while conserving through renewable ones by various creative media.

A more than week long celebrations concluded with Van Mahotsav today. Chief Guest Sh. B.L. Sharma;IAS, Education SecretaryChandigarh, planted Gulmohar tree in the college campus.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal welcomed the chief guest with great fervor and spearheaded the entire week of events and activities in the college.

The celebrations started from Aug. 14, 2018, with an awareness generating walkathon in which about 300 students participated. Various Inter-college competitions comprising of Poster Making, Short Film Making, Eco-friendly Rangoli, Declamation Competition and Nukkad Natak on “Akshay Urja Apnao, Pariyawaran Bachao” were organized in the entire time span. Students from 12 Government and Private Colleges participated in the competitions with full zeal and fervor and gave one another a tough competition.

Grand finale of Akshay Urja Week Celebrations were held in the college auditorium. Prizes were distributed by the Chief Guest Sh. B.L. Sharma; IAS, Education Secretary , to the winners for the various inter college competitions. The Chief Guest congratulated all the students and faculty members and advocated the importance of educated and enlightened man power as the greatest asset to the nation. He appreciated the efforts of the college in order to encourage the students to use renewable sources of energy.

Sh. B.L. Sharma also inaugurated the Skill Development Lab in Fashion Designing. It is equipped with latest sewing machines purchased from RUSA infrastructure grant.

Convenor of Harita – Environment Society of the college, Mrs. Ranjana Sharma delivered the vote of thanks.

»CELEBRATION OF AKSHAY URJA DIWAS (August 14, 2018)

In order to sensitize our young generation regarding the significance of renewable sources of energy and various Scientific Innovations achieved in this field, Harita- the Environment Society of Government Home Science College, Chandigarh observed the Akshay Urja Diwas sponsored by Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology (CREST) , Chandigarh Administration with great enthusiasm. The theme of Akshay Urja Diwas was ‘Impact of Akshay Urja in India’.

To promote the cause, a walkathon was organized on August 14, 2018 to generate awareness regarding the importance of conservation of Akshay Urja (Renewable sources of energy). About 300 students participated in Walkathon. To mark the event, various Inter-college competitions like Poster Making, Short Film Making, Eco-friendly Rangoli, Declamation Competition and Nukkad Natak were organized. As many as 70 students from various colleges participated in the competitions with full zeal and effort.

Students participated with great zeal and enthusiasm. Students highlighted the issue with creative and mind-blogging ideas during competitions. The aim of such activities is to generate mass awareness and disseminate information about the advancement made in the renewable energy technologies.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, appreciated the efforts and creativity of young minds and further urged the students and the gathering to promote and conserve the use of renewable energy resources for sustainable energy supply.

»SWACHHTA RALLY BY NSS VOLUNTEERS

The NSS Wing of Government Home Science College organized an awareness rally as a part of Swachhta Pakhwada as a step towards Swachhta in Society.

The rally witnessed participation of a large number of students. The rally was flagged off by the Principal of the college Prof. Sudha Katyal in the presence of the NSS incharges Ms. Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma and the accompanying faculty members. The students holding banners, posters, and placards in their hands chanted slogans for generating awareness among the common masses. Before that they actively participated by making beautiful posters and writing motivational slogans with an aim to spread awareness among people. »VISIT TO WELFARE AGENCIES (August 11,2018- August 13,2018)

The enthusiastic NSS Volunteers of Government Home Science College observed Swachhta Pakhwada by visiting GMSH 16, Market of Sector 10,Bus stand of Sector 17 and Old Age Home Sector 15, Chandigarh to take over the opportunity of cleaning the area and making it more hygienic for the public.

Volunteers also interacted with the public around to know more about their views regarding the Government launched scheme Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and what efforts are being done by them to bring about a change in the society. Moreover volunteers also performed Nukkad Natak to generate awareness regarding the importance and pros of Cleanliness in one’s life.

The Cleanliness drive was supervised under the NSS programme officers Ms. Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma. They also interacted with the public to know about their opinion about Swachhta and what efforts can be done further to add to the end results of this scheme.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, applauded the students’ efforts of cleaning the market streets and hospital area and further encouraged the students to continue with these good deeds in future as well.

CLEANLINESS DRIVE IN THE ADOPTED VILLAGEKHUDA ALI SHER AND COLLEGE CAMPUS(August 9, 2018- August 10, 2018)

To promote the cause and objectives of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the entire team of active NSS Volunteers of Government Home Science College organized Cleanliness Drive in the adopted village, Khuda Ali Sher.

The students made an effort to clean all the lanes of the village and thus devoted two days for intensive cleaning. Efforts were made to involve local people so that they understand the dignity of labour and develop a habit of keeping their surroundings clean.

This cleanliness drive was done under the guidance and supervision of NSS officers Ms. Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma. They also interacted with the villagers to emphasize the importance of cleanliness in ones surroundings.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, highly appreciated the student’s efforts and dedication in promoting the motto of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.



»DOOR TO DOOR CAMPAIGN (August 6, 2018- August 8, 2018)

To promote the Government launched scheme of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and the services provided under the umbrella of this theme, the enthusiastic volunteers of Government Home Science College conducted a door to door campaign in the adopted village, Khuda Ali Sher to know about the prevalent problems in the adopted village, Khuda Ali Sher.

NSS volunteers interacted with the local villagers by visiting their houses and discussed the problems they face related to Swachhta in their village. Students called it as ‘Drive Behavior Change Campaign’. Students made an effort to generate awareness amongst the villagers by Changing Behavior and Creating Sanitation at the grassroots level using innovative Information Education Communication (IEC) and Behavioral Change Communication (BCC) tools. Volunteers also emphasized upon the importance and necessity of Open Defecation Free(ODF) village and how to promote this message ahead.

This was done under the guidance of the NSS coordinators Ms. Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma who supervised the activities done by the NSS volunteers. They also interacted with the local people to know about the initiatives that have been taken by the concerned authorities to resolve their problems. They further suggested the required measures to fix the problems.

»SWACHTA PAKHWADA(August 1, 2018- August 15, 2018). SWACCHTA SHAPATH BY NSS VOLUNTEERS

To observe Swachhta Pakhwara in befitting manner, the effervescent NSS team of Government Home Science College enthusiastically planned out the throng of activities to be conducted throughout this camp. The students came up with new and innovative ideas to promote the importance of Swachhta in our surroundings. The Programme officers Ms. Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma interacted with NSS volunteers and counted the importance of National Service Scheme where the services of humanity are utmost needed. They also highlighted the objectives of NSS and the necessity to understand the community in which they work and also understand themselves in relation to their community. They also made an effort to develop a sense of social and civic responsibilities amongst the volunteers.

NSS Integration Pledge ‘Swachhta Shapath’ was administered at college by the NSS students and staff. Students pledged to work with dedication to preserve and strengthen the freedom and integrity of the nation. Furthermore, they affirmed to never resort to violence and to continue to endeavor towards settlement of all differences and disputes relating to religion, language, region or other political or economic differences by peaceful and constitutional means. In addition to this, they affirmed to never indulge in any activities against the spirit of cleanliness in all places with a responsible behavior and sincere efforts.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, promoted the cause of cleanliness by emphasizing upon the advantages of cleanliness and also highlighted various issues related to Swachhta.



»WORLD BREAST FEEDING WEEK 2018 CELEBRATED AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE

To observe the World Breastfeeding Week under the theme Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life and Nourishment for Life, the Department of Food and Nutrition organized a capacity building workshop and interactive session.

Dr. Sunil Aggarwal, Neonatologist, Fortis Hospital, Mohali conducted a lecture on ‘Advantages of Breastfeeding and Care of Neonates’. A skill development workshop on breastfeeding’ by Dr. Rabia, Lactation Consultant, Fortis Hospital, Mohali was also organized. A close interaction and discussion provided students with valuable information. The weeklong celebrations included an outreach program at a village where students enacted a skit to make people abreast of the importance of breastfeeding and conducted a rally to promote the same . An Inter college and Interclass Slogan Writing and Poster making competition were also organized. Nearly 60 entries were received from GMSH 16,GMCH 32, and colleges from across the city.

Prof. Sudha Katyal, Principal, delivered the inaugural address and apprised the students of the power that we as women hold by opting to breastfeed and ensuring a healthy future for our children.

 



»Government Home Science College ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

A comprehensive orientation program to support new students as they begin their journey for undergraduate, post graduate and diploma courses was conducted in Government Home Science College, Chandigarh.

Prof. Sudha Katyal, Principal, instilled confidence among students with her highly motivational address and urged them to follow the basic ABCD of life i.e. Attitude, Be Self Driven, Open to Change and be Disciplined. She assured the students that she and her dedicated faculty will fully support the new students in adjusting to the college environment and helping them in changing their dreams into reality.

The HODs introduced themselves and gave a brief outline about their subjects and their respective departments. Students were apprised on diverse aspects concerning them like scholarships, fee concessions, anti ragging, examination rules, student elections, NSS, NCC , hostel rules, as well about various clubs like Environment, Red Ribbon , Dramatics, Happiness and Well Being, Ginger etc where they can showcase their talents. The programme concluded with taking all the students around the college with the aim of making them acquainted with college departments and infrastructure.



»19th and 20th Day of SWACHH BHARAT SUMMER INTERNSHIP CAMP 2018

To meet the ambitious targets of the Indian Government’s Swachh Bharat Mission, the students of Government Home Science College enthusiastically participated in the ‘Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Camp 2018’.

On the concluding days of the Camp, students decided to interact with the local villagers to know more about the prevalent barriers faced by them in keeping their surroundings clean. Volunteers also inspected their houses to check if they had removed stagnant water from the coolers, overhead tanks and other open spaces as per the guidelines given to them during the camp. Students also talked about what they had learnt throughout the camp and enquired them about any queries that need to be answered.

NSS Volunteers and the Programme Officers Ms. Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma also expressed their gratitude to Sarpanch of the village, Sh. Hukum Chand, Team of Health Department, all the local villagers, enthusiastic children and students of Government Model School (Khuda Ali Sher) for making this camp a success and providing them with necessary help at every step. Volunteers also thanked all of them for their immense patience and being an active participant throughout the camp by sparing their valuable time.

»13th and 14th Day of SWACHH BHARAT SUMMER INTERNSHIP CAMP 2018

As a part of the 100 hours experiential Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Program 2018, NSS volunteers of Government Home Science College enthusiastically participated in the cleanliness drive in collaboration with the Government Model School of the adopted village Khuda Ali Sher.

All the NSS volunteers took an initiative to clean the school premises, laboratories, classrooms, playground etc. along with the NSS team of the school. They also made an effort to generate awareness amongst the school students about the importance and need for cleanliness in surroundings. Volunteers also interacted with the students to know about the problems they face in the village and regarding various initiatives which have been taken by the authorities to fix those problems. Furthermore, students also shared their ideas about generating awareness amongst the local villagers and focused on various solutions which can further promote the cause.

NSS coordinators Ms Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma guided the students with suggestive measures to help promote the Government launched scheme Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and various services that are provided under this scheme.

»11th and 12th Day of SWACHH BHARAT SUMMER INTERNSHIP CAMP 2018

As a part of the Government launched scheme ‘Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Camp 2018’, NSS volunteers of Government Home Science College actively participated to make an effort to generate awareness amongst the local people of the adopted village Khuda Ali Sher regarding the services provided under the umbrella of Swachh Bharat Mission.

NSS volunteers stepped ahead to inspect the houses of the villagers to check the cleanliness and suggested required measures that can be undertaken to add to the hygiene and sanitation both indoors and outdoors by inculcating proper standards of hygiene and sanitation in everyday lives. Students also organized a rally with an aim to divert people’s attention to the cleanliness of their neighborhood and society. Students urged the villagers to not to spread filth by keeping the used up packets with them till they find a dustbin. Moreover, they were asked to use water judicially to limit its wastage and its uncontrolled flow onto the roads that may call for vector causing diseases especially during rainy season. NSS volunteers also interacted with children to instill in them the spirit of cleanliness in and around their houses.

The rally was organized under the guidance and supervision of NSS coordinators Ms. Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma who helped the students spread this urgent message of the importance and need for Swachhta in India.

Students also got an opportunity to interact with the Sarpanch of the village Sh. Hukum Chand. NSS volunteers discussed the problems faced by the villagers and he immediately took these problems into consideration and took measures to resolve them.

NSS volunteers also had a talk with Mr. Rohit, an active member of Nehru Yuva Kendra, who motivated the students to be an active member of the team of NSS to bring about a positive change in the society.

»9th and 10th Day of SWACHH BHARAT SUMMER INTERNSHIP CAMP 2018

‘Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Programme’ is an innovative platform launched by the Government to expand the students’ field of knowledge and experiences. All the NSS volunteers of Government Home Science College enthusiastically stepped ahead to aware the local people of the adopted village Khudda Ali Sher regarding Swachh Bharat Mission on 9th and 10th day of the camp.

The NSS volunteers performed a number of activities along with the children and rural women. They taught various paper folding techniques like trees and flowers, choreographed dance steps on a patriotic song to children, suggested a number of helpful food tips and taught healthy food recipes for rural women. They also emphasized upon the importance of food hygiene and sanitation and safe steps in food handling, cooking, and storage that are essential to prevent food borne illness. All these activities provided the local villagers with immense learning experience. Educational games were also organized to aware the children about the importance of personal hygiene.

The activities conducted by the NSS volunteers were supervised by the NSS Coordinators Ms. Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma. The day was concluded with the distribution of refreshments to the villagers and awarded the children with candies for their active participation. Children went home with bucketload of memories.

»8th Day of SWACHH BHARAT SUMMER INTERNSHIP CAMP 2018

To meet the ambitious targets of the Indian Government’s Swachh Bharat Mission, the students of Government Home Science College enthusiastically participated in the ‘Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Camp 2018’.

All the NSS Volunteers made an effort to initiate the cleanliness drive in and around the adopted village Khudda Ali Sher on the 8th day of the camp. With this they also conducted awareness drives on menstrual hygiene and sanitation as well. Various campaigns were organized to make people aware about segregation of solid waste into non-biodegradable and biodegradable waste.

An awareness programme was also organized on underground drainage system, wet garbage and street cleaning. In order to create citizens' ownership, targeted multimedia campaigns are being undertaken, particularly to address citizens' role in waste management. These include 'Compost Banao, Compost Apnao' on on-site composting and campaign on segregating waste at source. All these activities were being done under the supervision of NSS coordinators Ms. Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, was highly impressed with the students’ effort and dedication to achieve the motto of Swachh Bharat Mission.
