»51st ANNUAL CONVOCATION CUM PRIZE DISTRIBUTION AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE(12.04.19)

In recognition of the exceptional achievements of its students in academics, sports and cultural activities, Government Home Science College organized its 51st Annual Convocation cum Prize Distribution function. As many as 200 graduates and post graduate students were conferred with the degrees. The Chief Guest of the occasion was Sh. B.L. Sharma, IAS, Education Secretary, Chandigarh Administration and Sh. Rubinderjeet Singh Brar, PCS, Director Higher Education, Chandigarh Administration, was the Guest of Honour.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal presented the Annual Report of the college. The report provided glimpses of the highlights of the college during the academic year 2018-19 as well as the illustrious achievements of the students in all spheres. The college newsletter depicting the glorious progress made by the college during the session 2018-19 was also released.In addition, prizes were awarded for a number of co-curricular activities.

Kanika Lubana from B.Sc. (H.Sc.) 6th Semester was awarded the best all round student of the year,Akanksha Arora from B.Sc. (H.Sc.) 6th Semester won Dr. Devi’s Award for being the most compassionate and helping student of the college.

Honorable Chief guest, Sh. B.L. Sharma congratulated all the students and said that they are lucky to be a part of one of the best college not only in Chandigarh but also in India. He further added that education is not all about filling the brain with information but it should aim at making us a noble human being.

Prof. Sudha Katyal, Principal, congratulated the prize winners for keeping alive the inimitable tradition of excellence of the college. Advising the students to never rest on their laurels, she further exhorted them to work towards their goals with focused determination.

 



»Government Home Science College Tops in NIRF-2019 among Tricity Colleges (09.04.19)

Government Home Science College attains 72th rank at National level and tops among tricity Government and Private Colleges in National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) , 2019 announced by Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Shri. Prakash Javadekar on April 9, 2019. The college scored 51.27 points in the above ranking. The participated institutes were evaluated on Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcome (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) and Perception.

 

PrincipalDr. Sudha Katyal shared that it is a proud moment for the college and expressed her happiness on this great achievement. She further added that this higher ranking was made possible only by the hard work, dedication and team efforts of all the faculty members.



»KHADI FOR NATION, KHADI FOR FASHION BY HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE (29.03.19)

Government Home Science College showcased Aakriti 2019, their Annual Fashion Show at the ongoing cultural fest - 2019 at Tagore Theatre under the aegis of Department of Cultural affairs, Chandigarh Administration. It provided a grand platform for showcasing the creativity of budding fashion designers, models and entrepreneurs of the college.

The event revolved around the theme – “Khadi for Nation, Khadi for Fashion” to commemorate 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi whose vision is still applicable till date. This fashion show is cohesion of a year long effort put in by the college staff and the students of Bachelors in Fashion Designing, B.Sc. Home Science (Apparel and Textile Designing) and P.G. Diploma in Fashion Designing. The goal of this fashion show was to provide an opportunity to the students for start-ups and entrepreneurship.

The show boasted of a long list of dignitaries. Sh. Manoj Parida, I.A.S, Adviser to Chandigarh Administrator was the chief guest for the event. The guest of Honor was Sh. BL Sharma, I.A.S, Education Secretary and special guests Madam Lippi Parida, wife of honorable chief guest, and Sh. Rubinderjeet Singh Brar, Director Higher Education. The Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, gave floral and formal welcome to all.

The extravaganza witnessed a wide array of 17 themes ranging from ‘Sumptuous Ectasy’, ‘Threads of Emotions’, ‘Hi- Ho- Blue’, ‘De- Rosa- Volantes’, ‘Classic Modernity’, ‘The bloc Magic’, ‘Nawab-e- Illamat’, ‘De Colour Castano’, ‘ Vintage Charm’, ‘Serene Westido’, ‘Tres Chic’, ‘Sapphire Lane’, ‘Ombre Splash’, ‘Razakiya Threads’, ‘Razzamatazz Rass’, ‘Bloomimg Tales’. All the rounds incorporated a beautiful amalgamation of khadi with other fabrics and a mix of embroideries from all over India ranging from Phulkari to chikankari, kantha and gota patti, to name a few.

The audience was enthralled by the fascinating magical presentation of exquisite and impressive collection, exhibiting graceful blending of khadi with structured designs and layered ensembles for the contemporary woman. The event was well attended by various dignitaries of the city, distinguished guests from fashion industry, sponsors of the event, media personnel, Alumni, parents and students.

Prof. Katyal highly appreciated the efforts put in by the students and faculty members. She encouraged everyone to take inspiration from the show to use khadi in contemporary styles. As advocated globally and by United Nations, Khadi is the fabric of the future being carbon free, eco friendly and helps generate income for small scale industries.

The show was an eye opener and truly lived up to its theme – khadi for nation and khadi for fashion.



»HOME SCIENCE FEST – 2019 A STEP TO ENCOURAGE ENTREPRENEURSHIP(08.03.19)

The college organised Home Science Fest on the campus keeping afloat the spirit of the main motto ‘Earn while you learn’. The fest served as a platform for our college students to hone their entrepreneurial skills and have first-hand experience of having a start-up. Chief Guest, Sh. B.L. Sharma, IAS, Education Secretary, Chandigarh Administration and Guest of Honour, Sh. Rubinderjeet Singh Brar, Director Higher Education, Chandigarh Administration, inaugurated the fest. Director Social Welfare Mrs. Navjot Kaur and Session Judge Sh. Mahavir Singh Ji also graced the occasion. The event marked a tribute to empower females and all efforts made by the college through the curriculum, workshops and seminars in helping develop our girl’s entrepreneurial skills was highlighted. Budding entrepreneurs of the college who have launched their start-ups in the digital world were felicitated. Some of the success stories of our alumni such as Cookie Marwaha an established baker, Dietician Shreya who runs 14 diet clinics around India and Mrs. Shweta Khanna owner of Flaunt Couture , a designer clothing brand in Elante Mall were felicitated.

Home Scientists as young entrepreneurs displayed their skills and talents by putting up a number of stalls. Special attractions of the event included fun psychological games, nutritious munchies, skill testing, display of textile upholstery, joy rides, junk stall, diet clinic/health mela to name a few. The college ground pulsated with scintillating music and a lively crowd. The stalls put up by students of various departments showcased their artistic and creative abilities through a variety of creative and eco-friendly products which were indeed a crowd puller. A very special segment catering to the interest of the kids included a variety of rides and games. Inter colleges competitions were held on the theme of environment and women empowerment including face painting, rangoli making and slogan writing. An array of edible delights attracted a huge footfall.

The event was well supported by our sponsors such as Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration, Indian Oil, Lotus Ice Creams, Oppo, Verka – our refreshment partner, State Bank of India, Shalby Hospital, Indus Technologies, Malik Jewellers, State Legal Services Authority, Department of Social Welfare.

The Chief Guest and Guest of Honour highly appreciated the efforts of all the students. They enthusiastically participated in all the games and tasted the nutritious munchies. They appreciated the efforts put in by the college in helping imbibe the spirit of entrepreneurship and empowerment amongst girls.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal congratulated the students for putting up a great show and showcasing their skills and expertise. They truly earned while they learned. The principal further applauded the efforts of all faculty members and appreciated the team effort put in to make this fest a huge success.



»POLYTHENE –EK GAMBHIR SAMASAYA (06.03.19)

The students of Government Home Science College organized an extension program to generate awareness regarding POLYTHENE –EK GAMBHIR SAMASAYA in Apni Mandi, Sector-15 Chandigarh on 6th March, 2019.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Shalu, students conducted a survey on February 20, 2019 to check the use of polythene bags by people. Two target areas were covered, one from market area and another from vegetable market. Students took the initiative to aware the masses about the ill-effects of polythene bags on both humans and animals. They also distributed paper bags to discourage the use of polythene bags. A rally was organized in Apni Mandi, Sector-15 Chandigarh followed by distribution of paper bags to vegetable vendors and cloth bags to customers and motivated them to adopt these in their daily lives. Demonstration on making paper bags was carried out. Students also enacted a nukkad natak which attracted a large number of people to highlight the major problems concerned with the use of polythene bags and the various issues it can cause in the near future.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, highly appreciated the efforts of the students in making people aware of the disadvantages of use of polythene bags in daily lives. She further motivated the students to continue to spread this message ahead to make this mission a success.

 



»AMAZON ORGANIZED PLACEMENT DRIVE AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE (06.03.19)

A campus Placement Drive was organized by Amazon, a global leader in e commerce in collaboration withplacement cell of Government Home Science College for undergraduate students.

More than 100 students registered for this on campus placement drive out of which 50 students were shortlisted and 6 students were given offer letters in profile of Work From Home with the salary packages of Rs. 1,56,580- Rs. 1,75,875. It provided an opportunity to the students to work in corporate world of e-commerce. Students had to go through rigorous selection criterion. Screening tests included a lecture round which analysed the communication skills of the students, later part considered of the the Pearson Versant test which comprised of four rounds and the last round included calling round in which students attended the calls of three callers. The aim was to analyze the problem solving skills of the students.

Students felt enthusiastic and gained confidence as it was their first ever interview for a job placement. It was a proud moment for both the students and the college.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, congratulated the students and encouraged them to participate enthusiastically in campus Placement Drives as they help the students to continuously evolve and expand their focus into new business domains.



»HOME SCIENCE GIRLS CONDUCTED A SENSITIZATION PROGRAM ON ‘DOMESTIC VIOLENCE’ (05.03.19)

The students of Government Home Science College organized an extension program on ‘Sensitizing Women about Domestic Violence’ in the adopted village Khuda Ali Sher.

To promote the cause, the students organized a rally for a mass awareness. A skit was also enacted under the guidance of Mrs Shalu by the students informing the public about the ill-effects of Domestic violence and how it affects the lives of both women and their children. The women of the village were motivated to say NO to Domestic Violence. They were also made aware of various laws framed in the Constitution of India to help women escape from the tentacles of this evil. An interactive session was conducted with the ladies of the village to know more about the prevailing problems in their village and their solutions.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal highly appreciated the efforts of the students for removing this social evil from our society. She motivated the students for more of such extension programs for generating awareness to promote the cause.



»HOME SCIENCE GIRLS CONDUCTED AN AWARENESS PROGRAM ON EXAM ANXIETY(26.02.19)

As the exams are around the corner, the students of Government Home Science College took the initiative to conduct an extension program on Managing Exam Anxiety in two schools of tricity from 21st to 26th February, 2019.

Students in B.Sc. H.Sc. 6th Semester conducted an Anxiety test to check the anxiety level among the school students. The students were then made aware of exam stress and anxiety and how it may affect their performance in examinations. Various steps to combat exam stress were also shared with them through PowerPoint presentation and puppet show. Severe cases of anxiety were identified and provided with counseling sessions.

The students aimed to spread awareness amongst approximately 200 pupil of the school. To evaluate the success of the program a General Knowledge test was conducted for school students and again anxiety level was calculated which showed remarkable improvement in them.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, appreciated the efforts of the students and motivated them to further generate awareness regarding exam stress and various steps to resolve these issues amongst many school students.



»STUDENTS BRING LAURELS TO THE COLLEGE(24.02.19)

Students of Government Home Science College brought laurels to the institution by winning prizes at theChandigarh Rose Festival and Chandigarh Urban Festival 2019.

Rashika from B.Sc. Home Science 3rd Year bagged the first prize in Floral Rangoli Competition at Chandigarh Rose Festival.

Akanksha from B.Sc. Home Science 1st Year bagged the 1st prize in Dry Rangoli Competition at Chandigarh Rose Festival.

Aerobics students of the college won the title for ‘Creating Best Vibes’ at Chandigarh Urban Festival 2019.

Akanksha from B.Sc Home Science 1st Year was awarded for‘Extra ordinary Performance’ and was presented with a cycle.

Students also participated in the Dance Competition at Chandigarh Rose Festival and won the title of ‘Best Bhangra’.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal appreciated and congratulated the students on their brilliant performances as they brought laurels to the institution.



»PANEL DISCUSSION ON WOMEN LUMINARIES IN BUSINESS SETUP: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES (21.02.19)

As a Placement initiative, Government Home Science College conducted a panel discussion on Women Luminaries in Business Setup to apprise the students of the challenges and opportunities in the field of entrepreneurship. Successful women entrepreneurs from around the city were invited as part of the panel.

Ms Jyoti Arora , owner of VataMa Solutions was the first speaker of the day. She shared her journey of learning to manage your own waste which started off by seeing her daily garbage collector. Her idea about segregating our wastes and using it as compost was brought about after a lot of research and technical expertise. She gave up all inhibitions about putting her hand in the dirt and has gone on to save more than 2000 kg waste daily in Chandigarh and recycling it to help save the environment and make the air clean.

Ms. Gayatri Sood from Monica's Puddings and pies, a professional chef discussed her journey about how this brand was established. She spoke about how her passion developed and her first baking experience at the age of 8 years. She went on to study at Le Cordon Bleu from Paris , the best pastry school in the world. Her Challenge was to add on more desserts and recipes to the existing established brand name. She discussed how running so many stores is challenging and to procure quality ingredients and management of staff. She motivated the girls to follow their dreams and passion.

Ms. Lalita Grover , the next guest speaker encouraged the girls to take up any challenges that come their way. She runs a family business of ready made garments and spoke about how her journey was challenging in terms of lack of support but its her passion and determination that kept her going. She shared how gender bias and societal pressure bagged her down but she kept going on and emerged as a successful entrepreneur.

Ms. Ashna Narula , the founder of Psychopedia a training institute to help people find the light hidden in them was the next speaker. She shared how she invested all her savings and did not borrow money from her family. Her journey included not just acting as a faculty, but also managing the whole institute. She discussed how her attitude shifted from one of complaining to gratitude. She encouraged the students to let their work speak for itself. She motivated the girls to become financially independent and not to depend on anyone else as' you have you'.

Mrs Savita Ahluwalia the last speaker of the day, is the owner of designer boutiques-Ujitaa and Vastram . She discussed about her growing passion for Fashion and trends. She emphasized the role of team work in achieving a target and to overcome major challenges in one's field.

Students also got an opportunity to interact with the guest speakers and further discuss their queries regarding entrepreneurial ventures. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal , expressed her gratitude to all the dignitaries for sharing their experiences and challenges in their fields and further motivated the students to set their goals and move ahead and become successful.

 



»WORKSHOP ON ESSENTIALS OF VENTURING INTO E-BUSINESS(20.02.19)

A workshop on 'Essentials of Venturing into E- Business' was organized by Government Home Science College as a placement initiative. The guest speakers were Mr. Aman , Freelancer and Digital Marketing Trainer with over 12 years experience in Digital Marketing Field and Ms. Ritika Raina , M Com and E-commerce sites expert with over 2 years hand on experience working on sites.Mr Aman emphasized the integral role of E-commerce in modern world. He explained about the marketing of products through various websites and highlighted the four P's of marketing i.e. Product, Price, Place and Promotion. He further added that any start up or venture can easily be advertised with digital marketing without incurring much cost.

Ms Ritika Raina gave an insightful lecture on Digital Marketing. She discussed three types of search results opened in advertisement business. She highlighted upon Relevance, Freshness and Popularity as being important points in web marketing. She further emphasized the role of content management system used for digital marketing and pointed out the major differences between Facebook and Instagram pages. She also informed the students about uploading products on snapdeal and flipkart.Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal , thanked the guest speakers for sharing their pool of knowledge with the students and further motivated the students to make best use of these informative workshops and establish their own online startup or ventures by selling products on E-Commerce sites.

 



»HOME SCIENCE GIRLS PARTICIPATED IN NATURE CAMP AT CITY FOREST (14.2.19)

Government Home Science College in collaboration with the NGO YuvSatta (Youth for Peace) under theEnvironment Education Awareness and Training Scheme , of Ministry of Environment and Forests ,Government of India Department of Environment , Chandigarh Administration participated in the Nature Camp at City Forest behind Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh. Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal , faculty members and about 45 volunteers of NSS and Harita, the Environment Society of the college participated enthusiastically in the camp. The main motive was to promote the knowledge of rich flora and fauna of the region and generate environmental awareness among the students and teachers through innovative Nature Camps and training programmes.

TC Nautiyal , conservator of Forests and member secretary, Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (PCCC) informed the students about the harmful effects of single use plastic and shared the havoc created in Daddumajra (the landfill site for Chandigarh). Mr Promod Sharma , coordinator, YuvSatta, urged the students to ban use of single use polybags in college and increase use of fountain pen instead of disposable ball pens. Mr Kulbhushan Kanwar, popularly known as the city’s Butterfly Man shared his experiences and passion for conserving and photographing Butterflies.

Students were given camping kits containing steel water bottles, notepads, pens, light refreshment and lunch during the initiative. Prof. Katyal expressed her gratitude to the speakers for sharing their pool of knowledge with the students and further urged the students to avoid the use of plastic in their daily lives and help promote the cause by spreading this message ahead.



»GOVERNMENT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE PARTICIPATED IN 10th PANJAB UNIVERSITY ROSE FESTIVAL

GOVERNMENT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE PARTICIPATED IN 10th PANJAB UNIVERSITY ROSE FESTIVAL (Feb 08-10,2019)

The students of Government Home Science College put up a number of stalls of skilled items learnt during their course in 10th Panjab University Rose Festival, Chandigarh as a part of 'Earn While You Learn' initiative. Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice chancellor , P.U. was the chief guest for the event. The students of B.Sc Home Science 2nd year showcased the display of handwork items with a professional touch like handcrafted jewellery, painted pots as garden accessories, bookmarks, shagun envelopes, Paper Bags, File folders, hand painted articles including bedsheets, curtains, cushion covers, table covers etc. under the leadership of Mrs. Seema Jaitly . The stalls received tremendous response at the event and the students generated an income and huge profit of approximately Rs 16,000 out of it.

The highlight was the setup of Valentine’s Special Stall which displayed Couple T-shirts, Homemade Chocolates, Donuts and Mini Greeting Cards. This stall proved a big hit among the young crowd of the festival. A tattoo making stall was also put up by the students. Students were highly appreciated for their efforts by the honorable chief guest.Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal , applauded the students for getting laurels to the college through their entrepreneurial skills and thereby attracting a large crowd in Rose Festival. The stall attracted wide coverage in both print and electronic media.

 



»WORKSHOP ON COUNSELING TECHNIQUES AND APPLICATIONS AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE (11.02.2019)

Government Home Science College organized a workshop on Counseling Techniques and Applications. The guest speaker Dr. Shashi Sethi, Director, ISHH Guidance and Counseling Centre from Panchkula, gave a valuable insight on various areas related to counseling for students. She began the session with discussion on the importance of case history and analyzing behavior of a child for counseling process. She informed the students that sleep, mood and appetite are three main indicators for the mental health.

A power point presentation was shared with the students to give a brief overview of the steps of counseling and qualities of a good counselor. She also interacted with students on various theories and tests used in counseling and discussed about the scope of the counselling for aspiring counselors. It was an enriching experience for both faculty and students to attend the counseling session by the honorable guest speaker. Principal Dr. Sudha Katyal appreciated the interactive session between the students and the resource person. She also motivated the students to become efficient counselor by attending such informative workshops in future as well.



»54th Annual Athletic Meet

Government Home Science College Sector-10 Chandigarh celebrated its 54th Annual Athletic Meet with great zeal and fervour. The two day sporting event including semi-finals and finals began with inauguration by Dr. Sudha Katyal , Principal of the College, followed by the unfurling of the college flag and oath taking ceremony. The event began with the marching of coordinated footsteps of students in the parade led by the sports captain Diljot Kaur Sidhu . On-and-off rain showers failed to dampen the spirit of sportsmanship among students hitting the wet grounds with Parade. The lighting of the Presidency Torch was carried by sports stars of the college, Sarmishtha Sharma, Muskan, Akansha, Kanika Lubana, and Shweta of B.Sc. IInd and VIth semester. The day was filled with fervour and excitement experienced amidst showers, thrills, shrills and cheers. IPS officer and the first women SSP of Union Territory of Chandigarh Nilambari Vijay Jagdale was the chief guest for the day. Principal Dr. Sudha Katyal gave a floral welcome to the chief guest and introduced her to the audience.

Students, teaching and non- teaching staff enthusiastically participated in various events like three legged race, long jump, shotput, javelin, discuss throw, sack race, obstacle race and other track activities. The most enthralling event was the tug of war amongst the students and lemon spoon race amongst the faculty members. All impressive performances of Yoga, Aerobics and ludi/ Bhangra dance by the students kept the audience enthralled. The chief guest congratulated the prize winners and motivated the students to perform with same zeal and fervour in all future endeavours. She appreciated the Principal and her team for putting up a great show in the face of challenging weather. Kanika Lubana of B.Sc(H.Sc) VIth semester was declared as the best athlete. The event was supported and sponsored by the media partners93.5 Red fm Gopal Sweets Talwar Dairy and Sweets and Vivo Government Model Senior Secondary School sector 10 and Sector 33 in collaboration with the college provided their school bands for opening and closing ceremony of the college. The principal, Dr. Sudha Katyal expressed her gratitude to all the teachers for their cooperation and support and advised students to keep up their sportsman spirit. She urged the students to take inspiration from their honourable chief guest popularly known as Lady Singham and Dabang Police Officer . The function concluded with the flag retreat ceremony and giving away of vote of thanks by Mrs Mona Soin , the Sports Incharge.



»Home Science College Organised Workshop on Resume Writing and Career Opportunities (05.02.2019)

Government Home Science college organised an interactive workshop on Resume writing and career opportunitie as a part of the placement initiative.

More than 100 students of final year of undergraduate and postgraduate streams took part in the workshop. Mr Shelly karwal , a motivational speaker from Vestige India Pvt Ltd , apprised the students about the various aspects of resume writing. He guided the students to post their resume on Linkedin as it has an access to large number of job providers. He also gave tips to present one’s skills and achievements in a manner to meet the requirements as per the employee. He further motivated the students to feel confident and accomplished as they are equipped to handle all adversities owing to their education and expertise and strive to achieve greater heights. Mr. Sunil from Innovative Knits also shared the techniques of writing effective curriculum vitae.

Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal encouraged the students to gain maximum benefits of such workshops which will enable them to get jobs and be successful in their various fields.

»ONE DAY SEMINAR ON ‘EMPOWERED GIRLS…EMPOWERED INDIA!’ (24.01.2019)

On the occasion of National Girl Child Day , Government Home Science College conducted a one day seminar on Empowered Girls…Empowered India! Advocate Madhu P. Singh , Former President and Judge of District Consumer Forum, Mohali, was the Guest Speaker of the day. She expressed her views on the rights of the girl child and women by citing several real life cases. Prof. Sudha Katyal , Principal of the college, introduced the theme of the seminar and talked about the 5th Sustainable Development Goals ofUNDP which is about achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls, in all circumstances. Another speaker of the day, Mr. Pramod , co-ordinator of YuvSatta, highlighted the need to develop courage and urged the students to remove their own in-build fears if they want to empower themselves. The final speaker of the day, Sh. S. Talwar , Owner of Talwar Dairy & Sweets, Sector-15, Chandigarh expressed that it is indeed a proud moment for him to have three beautiful and brave daughters and shared about his personal life experiences revealing stories of courage by his daughters.

The Pink Turban Campaign was also launched on the campus in collaboration with Yuvsatta . Students marked this event by tying pink turbans and releasing pink balloons to symbolise women empowerment.

A Workshop on Personality Development and Grooming Skills was organized at Government Home Science College as a placement initiative. Ms. Garima Walia , an alumna of the college and owner of The Allure-unisex salon and Diet Clinic in Chandigarh, was the guest speaker and demonstrator of the day.

More than 100 B.Sc. final year and post graduate students, beneficiaries of DAY-NULM project on free skill development training in Fashion Designing and faculty of the college attended the workshop. The speaker emphasized on the importance of being confident and feel beautiful from inside out. She gave live demonstration on workplace make up, light make up, formal dressing, accessorizing, grooming and how to prepare for an interview. She further demonstrated basic make up techniques, different skin types and skin care regime. She also shared tips on healthy eating for good skin. She encouraged the students to feel confident about themselves and to walk with a feeling of pride.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal , congratulated the guest speaker on her achievements and motivated the students to feel proud of our alumna and become successful entrepreneurs in their fields.



»ONE DAY SEMINAR ON ‘EMPOWERED GIRLS…EMPOWERED INDIA!’ (24.01.2019)

On the occasion of National Girl Child Day, Government Home Science College conducted a one day seminar on Empowered Girls…Empowered India! Advocate Madhu P. Singh, Former Judge of Panjab and Haryana High Court and Former President of District Consumer Forum, Mohali, was the Guest Speaker of the day. She expressed her views on the rights of the girl child and women by citing several real life cases. She highlighted that each women should possess a burning desire to be empowered. She further elaborated that empowerment can only be achieved if we as women overcome all our fears. Prof. Sudha Katyal , Principal of the college, introduced the theme of the seminar and talked about the 5th Sustainable Development Goals of UNDP which is about“achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls”, in all circumstances. Prof. Katyal further emphasized that if we fail to address girls’ differentiated needs and aspirations, a generation will be lost and with it, our hope for sustainable development, prosperity, peace and security will also be lost.

Another speaker of the day,Mr. Pramod ,co-ordinator of YuvSatta, highlighted the need to develop courage and urged the students to remove their own in-build fears if they want to empower themselves. He also made his talk interesting by showcasing a motivating short film on the life of Arunima Sinha , first amputee to climb Mt. Everest.

The final speaker of the day, Sh. S. Talwar, Onwer of Talwar Dairy & Sweets, Sector-15, Chandigarh expressed that it is indeed a proud moment for him to have three beautiful and brave daughters. In his talk he further, shared about his personal life experiences revealing stories of courage by his daughters and concluded that it is very important for parents to give conducive environment to their daughters where they can grow holistically without suffering gender inequalities.

The Pink Turban Campaign was also launched today on the campus in collaboration with Yuvsatta. Refreshments were sponsored by Talwar Dairy and Sweets. Students marked this event by tying pink turbans and releasing pink balloons to symbolise women empowerment.



»NUKKAD NATAK ON SWACHHTA BY M.C., CHANDIGARH AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE (17.01.2019)

To promote the Swachh Bharat Mission and make Chandigarh rank 1, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh enacted a Nukad Natak to make students aware of the Swachta App . The importance of maintaining swachhta in our surroundings and the use of blue, green and black dustbins was also highlighted beautifully by theatre artists.

Principal of the college, Prof Sudha Katyal expressed her gratitude to Mr. Jolly, a representative of the Municipal Corporation and motivated the students for being the agents of social transformation and contribute their best in keeping the city beautiful and neat. NCC girls cadets enhanced knowledge and groomed to become responsible citizen of India through workshop on ‘Personality Development and Character Building’. They were instilled on the essential learning to operate with self confidence, self respect and mutual respect. Through different exercises and fun games the cadets were made to practice and unleash the essential skills of being patience, alert, focused, goal oriented, being a good team member, an effective team leader and prioritization of work. Also various videos and poster making competition sensitized them on gender equality. Cadets learnt how to do Firing and realized their potential of firing under the firing officer Major Neelam Kumari. Many other such lectures on sensitive issues such as Anti Drug, Cancer Awareness, Career Couselling and stress management were organized by the NCC Battalion in to channelize the youth towards better nation development as they are the leaders of future society. All the cadets enjoyed the NCC camp life in the chilly winter and was feeling upset while going back to their home. They learned how to develop interpersonal relation in the time of hardship life.

Also various videos on sensitive issues as gender equality were shown to inculcate the important aspects of being rational and be more responsible towards the society. Many, other such lectures on sensitive issues such as Anti Drug, Cancer Awareness, Career Couselling and stress management were organized by the NCC Battalion in grooming the cadets to be better citizen’s of India.



»GIRLS BN NCC TRAINING CAMP BEGINS AT COLLEGE (03.01.2019)

The Combined Annual Training Camp-246 is organized by the 1 Chandigarh Girls Bn NCC Army at Government Home Science College on Wednesday, with 175 Girls Cadets from eight city Institutes along with a supporting staff of Army personnel and Associate NCC Officers Participating in the 10 days Training event.

Addressing the camp Col VK Sheoran, CO 1 Chandigarh Girls Bn NCC said in consonance to the motto of NCC i.e. Unity & discipline NCC Camps are unique platform for fostering sense of comradeship, team spirit, integrity and discipline amongst the cadets. The camp aims at developing leadership qualities through organized Personality Development Lectures, inculcate team spirit, enhance individual skills on, weapon training, firing, drill, map reading and physical fitness. He exhorted the cadets to excel in all fields, enjoy the training with the spirit of learning and cultivate comradeship amongst themselves.

Various competitions such as quiz, sports & cultural activities are planned for tapping the potentials of the cadets during the camp. Besides the various guest lectures on sensitive issues of Chandigarh as traffic management and cancer awareness. The students will also participates in social activities as swachhta abhiyan digitation.

The camp commandant Col VK Sheoran was very thankful to the Professor Sudha Katyal Principal & Govt. Home Science College, Sec-10, Chd for providing the college and Hostel campus in assisting the Girls Bn NCC to Organize the camp. Capt. Neelam Associate NCC Officer and Second in Command of the camp was also present on the occasion.



»7 DAY RESIDENTIAL NSS CAMP CONCLUDED WITH ENTHRALLING PERFORMANCES BY HOME SCIENCE GIRLS (30.12.18)

The NSS Unit of Government Home Science College celebrated the valedictory ceremony of the 7 Day Residential NSS Camp at the adopted village Khuda Ali Sher.

NSS incharges, Mrs Seema Jaitly and Dr Neha Sharma, interacted with the villagers to get their feedback about the camp and know more about the prevalent barriers faced by them in keeping their surroundings clean.

NSS volunteers gave enthralling performances. A Nukkad Natak was also enacted by the effervescent team of NSS on the theme 'Swachhta'.

The volunteers and the programme officers also expressed their gratitude to sarpanch of the village, Sh. Hukam Chand, all the local villagers and enthusiastic children for making this camp a grand success and also assured them to provide any kind of support at every step for future endeavours. NSS Volunteers also thanked rural people for their immense patience and active participation throughout the camp. NSS mentors expressed their gratitude to the Principal of the college, Prof Sudha Katyal, for providing all the facilities required for the successful execution of the camp.

Prof Katyal applauded the efforts of the NSS volunteers and their mentors for their innovative ideas and dedication. She also motivated the volunteers to continue with the moto 'Not Me But You' with more responsibility and make use of this opportunity and contribute their bid in transforming the society.



»LECTURE CUM INTERACTIVE SESSION AT KHUDA ALI SHER BY HOME SCIENCE STUDENTS (29.12.18)

As a part of 7 days residential NSS Camp, the volunteers of Government Home Science College visited the adopted village Khuda Ali Sher with an initiative to generate awareness amongst the common masses and enlighten their pool of knowledge through group discussions and lectures in collaboration with the doctors of Civil Dispensary Sector 19, Chandigarh. Dr Anu and Dr Ketan conducted a health check up drive for village children.

 

Volunteers gave an insightful lecture on 'Women Entrepreneurship'. They generated awareness regarding self-employment and motivated the rural women to undertake their own ventures and thereby fostering women entrepreneurship for a social cause and become financially independent. They were also informed about beneficiaries for Free Skill Development Programme for Fashion Designing in college under DAY-NULM Mission. A lecture cum interactive session on 'Care during Pregnancy' and 'Importance of Balanced Diet' was also conducted . They sensitized the women folk on importance of proper care of diet during Pregnancy and how it affects the health and Development of the growing foetus. Village children were informed about the ill-effects of junk food on health and the necessity of taking a healthy Balanced Diet. All the activities were done under the guidance and supervision of NSS incharges Mrs Seema Jaitly and Dr Neha Sharma. Principal of the college, Prof Sudha Katyal, appreciated the efforts of NSS volunteers in motivating the women to explore their hidden talents and hone their skills effectively.

As a part of 7 days residential NSS camp, the students of Government Home Science College visited the adopted village Khuda Ali Sher for generating awareness regarding the importance of cleanliness in the surroundings. The NSS incharge Mrs. Seema Jaitly with all NSS volunteers interacted with the villagers to enlighten their knowledge regarding the necessity of Swachhta. Various solutions for fixing the problems of unhygienic conditions were discussed. Further to promote the cause, a poster making competition was also organized by the volunteers for the village children.

During the second half of the day, the effervescent team of NSS conducted a rally on the theme Swachh Bharat. About 100 students participated. The villagers also enthusiastically joined in for the social cause. Slogans, banners and placards on the theme ‘Swachh Bharat- Swasth Bharat’ were prepared by the volunteers. As a part of camp, students sensitized the women folk for availing the free skill development program in Fashion Designing under the DAY-NULM training in the college.

The students were holding placards and raising slogans regarding healthy and safe eating. Later, during the day, NSS volunteers in the collaboration with department of social welfare, P.U. Chandigarh organised a lecture on menstrual hygiene in the adopted village Khuda Ali Sher. The speakers from department of Social Welfare sensitized the rural women regarding the occurrence of menstruation and recommended them to maintain personal hygiene during periods. The audience actively participated in the whole event. Principal Prof. Sudha Katayal highly appreciated the efforts of NSS volunteers and their mentors Mrs.Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma to participate with great zeal and make full use of this platform towards the social cause of transforming the society.

»Third day of 7 DAYS NSS CAMP 26.12.18

On the third day of the Seven Day Residential NSS Camp, the volunteers visited the Mauli Jagran complex locality, Daria, Chandigarh for screening of beneficiaries for Free Skill Development Programme for Fashion Designing in the college under DAY-NULM Mission . Students generated awareness regarding self-employment and motivated the rural women give their contribution in making this mission a success. This mission will enable the rural women to undertake their own ventures and thereby fostering women entrepreneurship for a social cause. Rural women were motivated to be job creators rather than job seekers. They were also explained about various funding opportunities available under Prime Minister Employment Generation Program (PMEGP) . All the activities were done under the guidance and supervision of NSS incharges Mrs. Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal , highly appreciated the efforts of the students in motivating the rural women to think out of the box with respect to skill development in various fields.



»GOVERNMENT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE 7 DAYS NSS CAMP (25.12.2018)

During the second day of the NSS Camp, the volunteers took the initiative of cleaning the Chandigarh’s most significant and renowned tourist Spot- Leisure valley . The sculptures at the Leisure valley were cleaned by the active NSS volunteers. Students also cleaned the garden and walking pathways for people to enjoy a dust free environment and take up fresh air.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal , highly appreciated the efforts of the students and further added to the students’ pool of knowledge by telling them about the history of Leisure valley, popularly known as the Lungs of the city . She also encouraged the students for further active participation.



»INAUGURAL DAY OF 7 DAYS NSS CAMP (24.08.2018)

Seven days NSS camp was inaugurated on December 24, 2018 by the Principal, Prof. Sudha Katyal. She was given a floral welcome by the NSS incharges Mrs. Seema Jaitly and Dr. Neha Sharma. While inaugurating the camp, Prof. Katyal shared her thoughts of society upliftment especially these belonging to underpriviledged sections of society through youth. She motivated the NSS volunteers to strive for excellence and encouraged them for maximum participation for the noble cause.

During the second half of the day, Ms. Kalyani Singh, Assistant Professor-Government Home Science College and PGGC 42, Chd delivered an insightful lecture to the volunteers on the importance of Nutrition and generated awareness amongst the students regarding various prevalent diseases, their causes, control and prophylactic measures.

»WORKSHOP ON SPSS TO BOOST RESEARCH ACTIVITIES (24.11.18)

Government Home Science College organized a workshop on “Analytical Significance of SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) in Research” Er.T. Chaudhary from IBM, Bengaluru, was the esteemed guest speaker. The objective of the workshop was to help students; faculty members and research scholars get acquainted with the widely used package SPSS. Furthermore, it focused more on hands on practical exposure.

All the faculty members, students of M.Sc. (H.Sc.) of all streams, and those enrolled in PhD actively participated in the workshop. Er. T. Chaudhary began the session by giving introduction to the students about the application of SPSS in research by explaining various types of variables. He imparted hands on training to the students about how to work in the variable and data view in SPSS, how to use descriptive statistics and formulate histograms, line graphs and bar graphs. He also cited various case studies for better insight to the students. One of the main highlights of the workshop was usage of the SPSS tool, how we can develop the required analytic skills and preparing, importing and exporting data in SPSS. The workshop proved to be very beneficial and disseminated practical exposure about various statistical techniques to the students. Principal, Prof. Sudha Katyal extended her expression of gratitude to the guest speaker and urged to organize more of such workshops to update the research knowledge of the students as well as faculty.



»FREE ENGLISH COMMUNICATION BRIDGE COURSE STARTS IN HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE(30.10.18)

As an initiative towards enhancement of Soft Skills and English Communication among students, free“English Communication Bridge Course” started in Home Science College today. The course is organized by the placement cell in collaboration with Regional Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (RCED) .Prof Nirmal Dutt with an experience of more than 35 years in teaching English language in D.A.V. College, Chandigarh, will be mentoring the classes. Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal welcomed Professor Nirmal Dutt and addressed the students, motivating them to participate in such course. The course content included Grammar and Vocabulary, Skills in Listening, Reading and Writing the English Language, Improving pronunciation and construction of sentences. The course witnessed a huge response from Under Graduate and Post Graduate college and resident students. Exercises given by Prof. Dutt made the workshop more interesting and stimulating. Certificates will be given to all participants on successful completion of the course.

Aakriti Goyal of Bsc Dietitics Vth semester won the third prize in the competitive examination on Mahatma Gandhi at the Department of Gandhian Studies at Panjab University . A matter of pride as this was an inter college examination where students from all over the city and Panjab university participated. Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal congratulated her and encouraged all students to participate in such competitions.



»FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE (22.10.2018)

A One Day Capacity Building Workshop in Trending Innovations in Designing Interiors and Jewelryunder the aegis of RUSA was held at Home Science College as part of the ongoing faculty development program. About 100 participants comprising of faculty members and students formed a part of the workshop.

In the first session, Ms. Gurjot Shan , Assistant Professor cum Academic Coordinator, Department of Interior designing, Chandigarh University talked about the latest design trends and interior space elements. She emphasized the importance of use of color and contemporary styles of furniture. She discussed the move of trends from highlighting walls to statement ceilings and encouraged the use of retro styles from the 70’s.

The second session was conducted by Ms. Rupi Rupinder, Alumnae of the college. She demonstrated the art of making simple jewelry using paper, lace, gotta etc. by using raw materials such as flowers, pieces of cloth easily available at home, she made beautiful jewelry pieces for the ears, neck and bracelets. She also exhibited different styles of trousseau packing as well as gift packing especially for the festive season.

Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal emphasized the importance and need to be creative and encouraged the participants to explore more avenues and widen their horizons of learning.

WORKSHOP ON ENTREPRENEURIAL VENTURES FOR NUTRITIVE CAKES, COOKIES & CHOCOLATES IN HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE (17.10.2018)

One day capacity building workshop for Entrepreneurial Ventures in Nutritive Cakes, Chocolates and Cookies was held at Home Science College on October 17, 2018, under the aegis of RUSA . Founder Baker of Polka & Vinnie'sMr. Vinod Sidhu, an acclaimed baker, who is also working as a part time faculty in Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management, gave hands on demonstration on Eggless brownie's, healthy Cakes, Whole wheat and Corn cookies, Stuffed baked whole wheat kulcha and decorative Chocolates. Cake Icing techniques were also demonstrated. Mr. Vinod has more than 20 years of experience crafting all sorts of treats, from cookies, bars and scones to creative cakes. As a successful bakery owner, Mr. Vinod shared his experience of setting up of entrepreneurial ventures in bakery to the Post Graduate students. The workshop was attended by more than 75 participants including faculty members and students. Principal Prof.Sudha Katyal urged the students to empower themselves with skills so as to use the same for being job creators rather than job seekers.



»WORKSHOP ON IMAGE STYLING IN HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE (11.10.28)

A one-day workshop was organised on “Image Styling” in Govt. Home Science College under the aegis of RUSA on 11th Oct, 2018. The first inaugural session of the workshop was presided over by the Principal of the College Prof. Sudha Katyal and Ms. Kalika Mehra, Director Active Clothing Co. Pvt. Ltd. Chandigarh . Prof. Sudha katyal discussed the recent trends in Higher Education under RUSA and emphasized on need of increasing access, building equity and enhancing quality education in institutes of higher learning. She informed the participants that as per All India Survey on Higher Education (2017-18), Gross Enrollment Ratio is highest (56.4%) in Chandigarh as compared to all states and UT’s of India. Further on, she explained the shift from basic clothing to styled clothing as one of the basic needs of mankind. She urged the faculty members to update themselves to attract good talent in higher education institutes for strengthening academia-industry linkages and forging collaborations with experts of peer institutes. Later Ms. Kalika Mehra, narrated various entrepreneurial opportunities in the field of fashion designing and discussed at length the various procedures and problems faced in setting up of a fashion unit.

Approximately, 100 participants comprising faculty members from the college and other institutions and post graduate students attended the workshop. The third session was presided over by Dr. Neha Miglani, ex- senior correspondent , Times of India and Post doctoral fellow in fashion journalism . She shared her wisdom words on Fashion Communication and body language namely clothing and personality, dressing taboo, arms and legs positioning and mirroring through body gestures. She also delivered ten powerful lessons on good communication to the audience.

Dr. Poonam Aggarwal, Associate Professor NIIFT , Mohali delivered an elaborate in-depth IVth session on elements and principles of fashion designing and suitability of different types of dresses and accessories for different occasions. The session was further carried out by Dr. Anu H. Gupta , Assistant Professor,UIFT , Panjab University . She gave a riveting presentation on Etiquettes and Grooming techniques to be followed in the workplace. The workshop proved to be very enlightening and beneficial for the participants. Principal of the College Prof. Sudha Katyal encouraged the staff to continuously upgrade their repertoire of knowledge through these workshops and seminars.
