»NSS Volunteers learned about Pranayams, Meditation and Startups on the Fourth Day of the Camp 11.03.21

 

The fourth day of NSS camp started with a yoga session in which the trained instructor specifically focused on the importance of Pranayam and meditation. While demonstrating the different forms of Pranayama such as Kapalabhati Pranayama, Dirga Pranayama, Viloma Pranayama and Anuloma Pranayama, the instructor also talked about the benefits of pranayams in reducing stress, anxiety and fatigue.Further, the instructor also showed how slow deep yogic breathing and meditation helps in improving mental focus, concentration as well as strengthen the respiratory system.

 Aligning with the Prime Minister's initiative of “Atmanirbhar Bharat”, a skill-building workshop on “How to Make Homemade Donuts” was conducted by Anupreet Kaur Sobti ( a student of M.Sc. in Nutrition and Dietetics) for the NSS volunteers. She creatively illustrated the various cooking methods which can be utilized to make homemade Donuts. She also talked about her startup ventures ‘Fantasia de Chocolates’ and ‘Dietura’ and motivated the students to become an entrepreneur. She also expressed her gratitude towards the Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, for giving her the opportunity to share her first-hand experience and difficulties encountered during her journey of startups.  

Focusing on the idea of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, talked about the myriad career opportunities in the field of entrepreneurship and startups. Furthermore, she also congratulated the student for achieving this wonderful feat and encouraged NSS volunteers to follow her footprints.

 

 

 



»Third-Day of NSS Camp emphasized the importance of Entrepreneurship, Skill-Development and Equitable Society 10.03.21

With an aim of making yoga as an integral part of young, dynamic and enthusiastic NSS Volunteers, the first session of the third day of NSS Camp rejuvenated the sagging spirits of the participants from the humdrum of modern life. The daily yoga practices under the supervision of the trained instructors help in creating an environment wherein students, faculty members, as well as non-teaching staff of the college can learn and create an equilibrium in their personal and professional life through the regular practice of several asanas like Navasana, Kumbhakasana, Vashishthana and Adho Mukha Svanasana etc. These asanas strengthen the body, boosts metabolism, relaxes the mind and help in eliminating toxic substances from our body. 

 

After the stimulating first session, two resource persons i.e. Mr. Paramjit Singh (Director, National Trainer, Motivator, National Speaker from Regional Centre for Entrepreneurship Development) and Dr. Manoj Kumar (Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, PG Govt. College for Girls, Chandigarh) were invited to invigorate the mindset of the budding entrepreneurs of our college. Talking about the gross inequality, biasedness and social exclusion of the marginalized sections in Indian society, Dr. Manoj Kumar charts out the problematic social fabric of the Indian society which hinders the socio-economic growth of the downtrodden people. On the other hand, Mr. Paramjit Singh in his session on “Skill Development and Entrepreneurship” shared his first-hand experience and talked extensively about the nuances and nitty-gritties involved in the process of becoming a successful entrepreneur. After the end of their respective sessions, both the resource persons answered the queries of the students to their satisfaction. 

 

The Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, emphasized the need for a socially equitable society for the sustenance and growth of the nation. Recognizing the efforts of the students, she further advised them to leave no stone unturned to achieve their aspirations.

 



»Second Day of NSS Camp focused on Healthy Living, Yoga and Swach Bharat Pakhwada 09.03.21

The first session of the second day of Seven days of special NSS Camp started with Yoga for Mental Health by yoga instructors from the Government College of Yoga Education & Health, Chandigarh. Through the practical demonstrations of multiple asanas such as Pranayam, Kurmasana, kursiasana, students were informed about the physical and psychological benefits of yoga in day to day life. 

For the subsequent session, two resource persons i.e. Ms. Indu Aggarawal (a visionary entrepreneur, philanthropist and life-coach) and Mr. Vikas Behl (Health Consultant) deliberated upon the idea of “Your Health Our Mission” and focused extensively on the physical, emotional, intellectual, mental and spiritual wellbeing of the various stakeholders in the society. Mr. Vikas Behl in his introductory remarks foregrounded the integration of Ayurveda, Yoga and Meditation as a necessary panacea for the overall wellbeing of the people. Following a similar trajectory, Ms Indu Aggarwal, co-founder of Disha for Success as well the chairperson for Disha for India foundation and Educational Trust, specifically focused on healthy living and emphasized that health is not merely a freedom from disease rather it is a state of complete well being. Talking about the ill-effects of modern lifestyle, unhealthy food habits and stressful living, she strongly emphasized to bring massive transformations in our life-style with the adoption of regular exercise, healthy eating habits and meditation as part and parcel of our life. 

Propelling the initiative of “Swach Bharat Pakhwada” by the Government of India, the second day of the camp ended with the participation of NSS volunteers in the cleanliness drive on the campus. Students were further informed about the segregation of degradable and bio-degradable waste.

Emphasizing the dire need of following a healthy lifestyle, yoga and Ayurveda for our social and spiritual well being, the principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, applauded the efforts of the students and motivated them to imbibe the spirit of service for humanity or humanitarian cause.

»Seven Days Special NSS Camp at Home Science College commenced with the Celebration of International Women’s Day 08.03.21

Taking into consideration the protocols and SOP’s issued by the Government of India, the NSS unit of Government Home Science College kick-started the seven days special NSS camp from March 08, 2021 to March 14, 2021 with the celebration of International Women’s Day. Aligning with the United Nations theme of the International Women Day 2021, Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in Covid-19 as well as the International campaign theme i.e. #ChooseToChallenge, the college has always strived hard to tap the potential of their girl students. The faculty members of the college have pushed the students out of their comfort zones and walked an extra mile for the realization of their dreams. The first session of the NSS camp commenced with Yoga for Mental Health for NSS vounteers and later it was followed by a special lecture on Anemia and Nutrition by Ms. Namrata.

The subsequent session was commenced by Open Eyes Foundation (a Non-government organization) for celebration of the International Women’s Day. The founder as well as the president of the organization, Mr. Sandeep Kumar started multiple initiatives such as Raddi Se Siksha, Naya Sawera, Rise Women, Education Hut, Hope on Wheels, Vision in Dark for the welfare of the underpriviledged students in the tricity. For his consistent and commdable work throughout the years, Prime minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi Ji mentioned about Mr. Sandeep and the relentless work of his ornganization during his “MAAN KI BAAT” recently.

Recognizing the accomplishment of the women who worked tirelessly for the welfare of the underprivileged sections of society, Open Eyes Foundation gave Women Excellence Award to 10 women, who significantly contributed in different arenas i.e. Mrs. Sulekha Rani (Education of Migrant Labourers), Dr. Parbhjot Guron Bajju (Education and Health), Ms. Sukhmani Kahlon (Health Sector), Ms. Mona (Education and Health), Mrs. Reenu Kakkar (Helping Divyangijans), Ms. Ravneet Kaur (Women Health), Mrs. Shivani (Education and helping people during Disaster), Ms. Dipti Singh (Quality Education), Mrs. Reena (Education for Slum Dwellers). In the similar vein, the Principal of the College, Dr. Sudha Katyal, was also felicitated with Women Excellence Award for her significant contribution in using digital media extensively in imparting quality education during pandemic in the society. Moreover, free sanitary napkins and hygiene kits were distributed to the 100 underpriviliged women during the event. It also provided a platform to the 100 NSS volunteers who not only provided the logistical support for this academic cum cultural endeavour but also learned from the grass root level expeirneces of women working for the upliftment of the often sidelined sections of the society.
The esteemed chief guest of the event was Mr Bikram Singh Rana, State Liasion Officer, Chandigarh Administration. The other dignitaries were eminent social activists i.e. Mr Ravinder Singh Billa, Social activist, Mrs Vanita Talwar and Mrs Harjinder Sodhi. The chief guest of the event emphasized on overcoming the pre-existed social and systematic barriers in the societal structure for the welfare of women in society.

The principal of the College, Prof. Sudha Katyal, strongly advocated the more inclusive leadership and equal representation of women as a pre-requisite for the development of the nation. The need of the hour is to change the mindset of the people and transform the disproportionate and inadequate representation of women. She also expressed her gratitude towards the social activists who provided socio-economical and psychological support to the impoverished as well as underprivileged people of the society.

Chocolate bouquet Contest

World's largest food and beverage company Nestlé collaborates with Government Home Science College, Sector 10, Chandigarh to celebrate Valentine chocolate bouquet contest for its students and alumni. The contest entries were open from Feb 10, 2022 to Feb 14, 2021.

As many as 30 students from various courses of undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma classes participated in the contest. The student demonstrated their creative skills by making innovative chocolate and flower bouquets. The results of the contest were announced on Feb 17, 2021. Among the winners of contest 1st prize was given to

»Govt. Home Science College signs MOU with Govt College of Yoga Education 19.02.21

Government Home Science College, Sector-10, Chandigarh signs Memorandum of Understanding with Government College of Yoga Education and Health, Sector 23, Chandigarh.

The M.O.U. will facilitate the students & staff in terms of health and fitness, yoga and meditation, physiological, psychological, behavioral and spiritual aspect of their health. It will also provide opportunities for exchange and progress to create awareness and conduct lectures/seminars/workshop in the college for the benefits of the students. Collaboration will also contribute in Interdisciplinary research, exchange of academic publications, reports, research scholars and experts, including students and other activities as well.



»Akansha Rakheja brings Laurel to Government Home Science College 16.02.21

With an aim to create an environment wherein teachers become facilitators in shaping and harnessing the creative potential, innovative ideas and critical ability of the students, the college has always walked an extra mile and pushed the students out of their comfort zones to achieve their aspirations and goals. The process has brought fruitful results in the academic and co-curricular performances of the students.

Treading along the path of excellence, Akanksha Rakheja, a student from B.Sc. Home Science (5th Semester), Government Home Science College, Chandigarh participated in confident performer category (i.e. #munchstar and confident innovator #munchstar) on Instagram at a national level which was held from 11 August 2020 to 30 October 2020. As many as 2000 registrations were received from all over India. She was declared as one of the winners in the event and received a reward of Amazon voucher of 9999 rupees. In addition, she also participated in #starbucksdancechallenge on Instagram at a national level. The event was held from 1 August 2020 to 31 August 2020 wherein she was declared as a winner. As a reward, she will get one tall beverage of her choice from Starbucks every day free for a year.

The Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, applauded the efforts of the student and encouraged others to follow her footprints.

 



»HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE RELEASES ANNUAL NEWSLETTER 06.02.21

The annual newsletter of Home Science College was officially released today by Sh. S. S Gill, IAS, Education Secretary, Chandigarh Administration. The newsletter is released annually every year and features a comprehensive update on the activities and achievements of the college, staff and students. 

Not letting the pandemic deter their spirits, the college continued to engage in academic as well as extra curricular activities online  to ensure overall skill development of the students. This issue of the newsletter includes the digital initiatives undertaken by the college during COVID 19 times as well as the contribution made by faculty and students to help disseminate knowledge and information. It gives an account of opportunities provided to students to "Earn while they Learn" not only in the college campus but also beyond the walls of the college building. A peep has been given about how and in what way the college has mapped its goals and activities in sync with the support of Government key initiatives and programmes.

»Home Science College Students brought Laurels 01.02.21

Our students made us proud by bagging top most slots and a number of prizes in an Inter College Cookery Competition organised by Home Science Association of Guru Nanak Girls College, Yamuna Nagar. The competition was held to celebrate Republic Day. The theme for the competition was preparation of Tri coloured recipes. Ishika Vijan from B.Sc. H.Sc First year bagged the first position and Rhythm Kalra from Post Graduate Diploma in Nutrition & Dietetics got the consolation prize in the category of  Republic Day Platter.

In the category of Republic Day Savoury Recipe, Devakshi Batta and Kashish Mehta from B.Sc. H.Sc Final year shared second positions followed by Ayushi Vats from B.Sc. H.Sc. Final Year and Puneet Walia from Post Graduate Diploma in Nutrition & Dietetics bagged third positions.Saloni Gupta from B.Sc. H.Sc. First year and Panya Mathur from B.Sc. H.Sc. Final year won consolation prizes.

In the third category, Republic Day Sweet Recipe, Larfgeet Kaur and Mannat Thakur from B.Sc. H.Sc. Final year bagged first and second positions respectively.

»DIETITICS DAY CELEBRATED AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE 14.01.21

A host of activities were conducted at Home Science College to celebrate “National Dietetics Day” on the theme “Dietetics in COVID – 19 world – The Digital Way”. Inauguration of an online portal for diet counseling was done on the college website to ensure continued services to people even at the time of the pandemic and strengthen the already running successful diet clinic.

A health camp was organized for the staff and students in collaboration with Healing Hospital, Sector 34, Chandigarh. The camp included gynecological consultation by Dr Ekawali Gupta who answered queries for all the young girls. Measurement of blood pressure, blood sugar and hemoglobin was also conducted. A diet clinic was also set up on the campus. All the teaching and non teaching staff, office and support staff and students attending the 2 day NSS camp availed the benefits of the health camp.

Along with this, an online Inter College competition was also organized on the theme “Create Your Healthy Plate, Let's See What You Ate “.This was done as an effort to instill the importance of healthy eating and consuming a balanced meal.

Principal of the college, Prof Sudha Katyal motivated the faculty and students to ensure dissemination of knowledge through the use of digital media.She encouraged the need to eat healthy especially during the time of the pandemic to ensure immunity build up.



»TWO DAY NATIONAL CAMP CONCLUDES AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE 14.01.21

The two day special NSS camp concluded with high spirits at Government Home Science College,Sector 10, Chandigarh by organising a plethora of events on the concluding day as well. Slogan writing on the kites, Kite flying and Puppet making were carried out by the students to mark the celebration of Makar Sakranti. The students also availed free health check up organised by college in collaboration with Healing Hospital, Sector 34, Chandigarh.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal lauded the efforts made by the students for participating enthusiastically in numerous activities at the camp, keeping in mind the Standard Operating Procedures and Protocols issued by Government of India in light of COVID-19. She also persuaded the students to disseminate the message of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao’ amongst the masses.

 



»HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE OFFERS INCUBATION FACILITY/ CO-WORKING SPACE TO ITS STUDENTS AND ALUMNI 08.01.21

Government Home Science College takes initiative to offer its well equipped laboratories of various departments to provide incubation facility/co-working space to its students and alumni. This is with an aim to promote, create, innovate and nurture their entrepreneurial skills. The students and alumni are invited to use these laboratories to update their entrepreneurial skills with the help of various equipments and technical expertise of the faculty and mentors in the college.

The incubation facility/co-working space will also help the students to expand their ventures to large scale enterprises. The students will be equipped with necessary proficiencies for a wide variety of careers. The much sought after department of Clothing and Textiles has Advanced Garment Construction labs, Weaving lab, Dyeing lab, Printing lab, Knitting lab, Textile Chemistry lab,Textile testing lab, Computer lab with with latest softwares like CAD Software Tuka Cad and Tuka Studio, Corel Draw, AutoCad, Photoshop, Rich peace Fashion & Textile Designing Studio. The advanced and much in demand field of Foods and nutrition, labs offered as incubation facility/co-working space are Food and Nutrition labs, Nutritional Biochemistry lab, Microbiology lab, food science lab, Nutritional Assessment lab and Institutional Food Administration Laboratory/Cafeteria.The department of Family resource Management that focuses on imparting students with the knowledge to enhance functionality, aesthetics and ergonomics of interior spaces, various labs available are Family Resource Management Lab, Furnishing Lab, Design studio, AutoCAD Lab and Ergonomics lab. For the students in the field of Human Development and Family Relations, the college offersGuidance and Counseling Laboratory . and Laboratory Nursery School.

The incubation facility/co-working space initiated by the college will act as a catalyst for maximizing the students' professional growth potential.



»New Year kickstarted by distributing Happiness Bags among needy 04.01.21

More than 200 students of Government Home Science College, Chandigarh, took part in an extension activity in the vicinity of their respective cities .They kickstarted the new year by distributing Happiness Bags among the needy. This pandemic has been a crisis like no other, and its impact has been felt the most by the needy and the poor. The Happiness Bags comprised of essential commodities, ranging from soaps, toothpastes,clothes ,blankets,stationary to food which were distributed while following social distancing norms. The students extended their kindness by distributing these bags that aimed to bring smiles and happiness among the people.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal lauded the efforts of the students and encouraged them to spread happiness in these difficult times.

 



»Home science students participated in Migratory Birds Watching & Swatchta Abhiyan at Sukhna Lake 05.12.20

Home science College organised Migratory Bird watching and Swachhata Walk at Sukhna lake in collaboration with the NGO Yuvsatta and Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration. Over 40 students along with faculty member Ms Seema Jaitely enjoyed sights of hundreds of migratory birds who had come to Chandigarh from far off places. The Chief guests of the events were Mr. Debendra Dalai, CCF, Director, Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration and Mr. Kulbhushan Kawal, an environmentalist. Addressing the young students, Chief guest Sh. Debendra Dalai shared that every year, with the onset of winter, hundreds of migratory birds flock to Sukhna lake from far-off place and other water bodies in the sanctuary,as Chandigarh is on the flight path of many migratory birds, which fly from Himalayas and even far-off places such as Central Asia, Siberia, Europe, China and Japan.  

As a measure of staying safe and to prevent spread of novel coronavirus, hand sanitisers and masks were also distributed to the students. Refreshments were also served to all participants. 

In the end, Pramod Sharma, Coordinator of Yuvsatta-NGO also conducted   Placard making competition on the theme Swachhata. Tina of  B.Sc. (HSc) 1st year, Prateek and Ekam of B.Sc. (HSc) IInd year won trophies. Principal Professor Sudha katyal appreciated such initiatives and added that bird watching in the lap of nature has  enabled the students to enjoy the environment while taking time away from screens and  revel in the stillness of the world around them.

 



»Komal Kakkar Wins 2nd Prize 01.12.20

Komal Kakkar, a student of B.Sc. 1st  Sem, bagged second prize in inter- college competition organized by MCM DAV College, Sector 36,Chandigarh on World AIDS day. The Caption Writing Competition was organized on Dec. 1 ,2020 on the theme" Global Solidarity, Shared  Responsibility’'

»Home Science College Celebrates Eco-friendly Diwali 07.11.20

Government Home Science College in collaboration with Yuva Satta NGO organised a Green Diwali Awareness Campaign. NSS volunteers of the college participated enthusiastically in the rally at Sukhna Lake holding colourful posters displaying a slogan ‘Say No To Crackers’. They also distributed ‘Stop COVeID-19’Masks and sanitizers to the general public. This noble activity was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration. As the festival of Diwali is approaching, NSS volunteers also sensitized and motivated the masses to do their bit in making the environment clean and green by celebrating ‘Green Diwali’ and avoiding bursting of crackers.Prof. Sudha Katyal, Principal of the college, applauded the efforts of NSS Volunteers and also urged everyone to celebrate Deepawali at their homes safely with sweets and diyas instead of bursting of crackers.

 



»ONLINE TEXTILE HERITAGE QUIZ 15.10.20

On the 6th day of on-going Tex-Style Week, an Inter college online textile heritage quiz was organized by Government Home College to acquaint the students with the rich textile heritage of India. Venturing into the historical and cultural repertories of textile traditions, quiz provided a much-needed learning platform to various stakeholders. The rationale behind the quiz was to generate awareness among students about diversified traditional textiles, embroideries and heirlooms of Indian heritage. It also encouraged the young minds to match their steps with the fast-moving world.

The quiz got an overwhelming response as more than 350 students participated in the online quiz competition on Google platform from various colleges.
Principal, Prof. Sudha Katyal applauded the efforts of the department and also encouraged students for their future academic endeavours.

 



»NATIONAL LEVEL ONLINE COMPETITION FOR SKETCHING AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE 14.10.20

As part of the ongoing celebrations of Tex Style Week, an online sketching competition was organised on the theme  ‘Sketching of Saree Draping on Fashion Figure’. The main objective of the competition was to channelize creative young minds to initiate thoughts about different draping styles of sarees.

A total of 65 students from different classes of the college participated in the competition. The endeavour proved successful in unlocking the students creativity during these challenging times.

Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal encouraged the students to focus on skill enhancement and capacity building to promote self-reliance and entrepreneurship. 

 



»Live Workshop of painting inspired from Rogan art 12.10.20

In order to encourage the spirit of keeping the traditional art forms alive and entrepreneurship development amongst students, Government Home Science College organized an online workshop cum demonstration session on painting inspired by Rogan Art. The workshop was conducted by Ms. JAYA DUGGAL, Trained Fevicryl Expert. She demonstrated the technique very patiently and also shared her expertise about the do's and don'ts of the technique.

This was an initiative to keep the traditional Rogan art alive in contemporary times by using recent material.

Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal appreciated the efforts of the department in organising this workshop and urged students to enhance their skills in keeping traditional art alive.

 



»Live Peer Learning Workshop on Icecream Making 12.10.20

In order to encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship and peer learning Government Home Science College organized an online workshop cum demonstration session on Icecream making. The workshop was conducted by Aanchal Goyal, budding entrepreneur and  student of B.Sc. Home Science final year. Aanchal also shared her experience that how she started her own startup ‘Delicious Delicacies’ which is running successfully  with more than 100 followers on Instagram. The budding entrepreneur demonstrated the art of making different flavors of ice-cream and also how to do creative plating and decoration of the same. She also de demonstrated the various innovative techniques of plating the cakes. The workshop was quite interactive, informative and participants gained a lot from it. The workshop was big hit and it was viewed by more than 250 participants.

Aanchal also expressed her heartfelt gratitude to worthy principal ma’am and faculty members of college for motivating and inspiring her to conduct this workshop. She added that she has been successful enough in starting her own startup by learning from the college itself.

Principal Prof. Sudha Katyal appreciated the efforts of the student in organizing this workshop for various stakeholders. She also  urged other students to exploit their skills and become self-reliant.



»HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE ORGANISES YOUTUBE LIVE SESSION ON TEXTILE CONSERVATION 11.10.20

Government Home Science college organised  a live session on Textile Conservation on college YouTube to mark the celebration of the second day  of Tex-Style Week. The key note speakers for the day were Dr. Rohini Arora-Assistant Professor, Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Punjab University, Chandigarh; Dr. Simmi Bhagat- Associate Professor, Dept. Fabric & Apparel Science, Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi and Ms. Smita Singh- Textile Conservation Consultant, at Textile Heritage Conservation, New Delhi

The first key speaker, Dr Rohini Arora talked about Textile conservation in context with archeological textiles and ethnographic textiles. She emphasized on the needs of conservation and its importance in textile research. The second speaker, Dr. Simmi Bhagat gave a lecture on Basics of Textiles conservation and preventive conservation methods. She also talked about careers and  future prospects in  Textile conservation field. The last speaker, Ms Smita Singh shared her practical experience and knowledge in the field of Textiles conservation, along with the basic textile remedial and preventive conservation processes. She also talked about the objectives of textile conservation in museums. 

You Tube live session was highly informative and interesting for all the viewers.It was viewed by more than 100 live participants.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, expressed her gratitude to the chief speakers for sharing their valuable knowledge and concluded by adding to the importance of textile conservation.



»World Mental Health Day celebrated by Home Science College 09.10.20

A live session on “ Invest in your Mental Health “ was conducted by Government Home Science College especially for the first year students who have just joined during the pandemic times. The  session was convened by Sister Anita which turned out to be a big hit ,with a viewership of over 660. She talked about the importance of Mental health to maintain overall health and motivated the students to be brave and see the silver lining in every situation. She asked the audience  not to think negatively and find a solution to problems rather than criticising everyone.
Sister Anita talked about 4 golden rules to be Happy and in a good state of mind; to Accept, to Appreciate, to Control one's expectations and not to waste one's time. She urged everyone to be thankful for what one has rather than cribbing for the things that one does not have. She asked the audience to use social media judiciously and work hard and enjoy the present.
She concluded on a positive note asking everyone to make meditation a part of one's life and practise to stay happy under all circumstances.

 



»Live session conducted on Developing a Nutri Garden 30.09.20

A live session on developing a Nutri Garden to promote good nutrition and health optimisation under the ongoing celebrations of Poshan maah was conducted at the nursery  of Dr Satish Narula. A retd Senior horticulturist from PAU Ludhiana, he is a consultant Advisor for theme gardens and landscapes for our city beautiful. The founder of Dr Green, he demonstrated the procedure of growing nutritious and medicinal plants and vegetables and the challenges one may face in the beginning. He also emphasised on the importance of keeping plants inside the homes for not only increasing the aesthetic value of our homes but also to keep the air inside fresh. Dr Narula wonderfully demonstrated the plantation of nutritious vegetables like tomatoes, turnip , carrots, radish etc along with their manuring and watering techniques even in places with space constraints. He enthusiastically answered all the queries of over 40 viewers during the session and encouraged everyone to develop a nutri garden not only to be able to eat healthy but also see it as a bonding activity with children. Principal, Prof Sudha Katyal appreciated the time spared by Dr Narula for such a wonderful demonstration.
 Dr Narula also thanked the principal to have invited him for this opportunity to be able to spread his knowledge amongst the masses.



»NUTRITION AMONGST CHILDREN ADVOCATED AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE 29.09.20

National Nutrition Month is being celebrated across the country to mark the fight against malnutrition. Home Science College  conducted an online awarenenss generation outreach program to celebrate “POSHAN MAAH 2020”. The topic for the program was Nutrition in school going kids, targeted to generate nutrition related awareness among the mothers of school going kids. 

This outreach program was intended to impart knowledge regarding the importance of nutrition in school going children. Explanation regarding the various macro and micro nutrients which need to be essentially included in the diet in adequate amounts was given. Tips regarding what parents themselves can do to help their children eat healthy were given, key points for good nutrition in primary school-aged children were discussed. 

The demonstration included a song and a video conveying the message of healthy eating. The target group was mothers of school going children from Chandigarh and Mohali. Around 30 participants joined today’s session.

Principal of the college Prof Sudha Katyal urged parents to ensure healthy eating habits for their children to lay the foundation to encourage good eating habits especially in the first 1000 years of life. 

 



»LIVE SESSION ON NUTRITION DURING COVID AND SUCCESS STORIES BY HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE 25.09.20

Government Home Science College in collaboration with Dt Lavleen, founder of Diet Insight and a renowned dietician of tricity conducted an online session on importance of healthy eating especially during the time of Covid and importance of Immunity.

Lavleen, an alumna of the college, shared success stories of her clients live on the program. She discussed the importance of eating right portions and combinations of food according to one's body type. She attributed all her success and knowledge to her mentors of Home Science College and urged all the viewers to follow their learnings and develop on their skills learnt as a student.

Principal Prof Sudha Katyal congratulated Lavleen for a highly motivating session and felt proud of alumna of the college who have gone on to serve the society.

 



»Home Science College Organizes Live workshop on Nutri garden and Microgreens 24.09.20

Government Home Science College organized live workshop cum demonstration session on how to grow Nutri garden and Microgreens by utilizing little spaces in  homes. Mrs Amita Bhuwania, a certified holistic  health coach  who motivated more than 150 households to grow organic veggies and adopt kitchen gardening, was the guest speaker of the session. During the workshop, she discussed the importance of growing kitchen veggies at home. She informed the audience that home grown vegetables are not only organic but also fresh and pesticide free. Moreover the joy of growing and harvesting at home gives the feeling of satisfaction. While growing vegetables at home, one should prefer  green leafy vegetables like dhaniya, methi, palak and sarson ka saag etc which take comparatively less time to grow from seeds and  can be used as herbs in routine cooking. The seeds of these vegetables are readily available in the kitchen itself.


Tips for home composting with kitchen waste were also shared. She gave live demonstration on growing microgreens from vegetable seeds at home. She informed the audience that micro greens are nutritionally  dense. They contain 10-40 times  more vital nutrients as compared to their fully grown plants.

 Approximaely, 200 participants registered for the workshop and it was viewed by more than 300 participants.
Principal Prof Sudha Katyal expressed her gratitude to the Speaker for insightful session. She said that kitchen gardening not only ensures an inexpensive, regular and handy supply of fresh vegetables but also inculcates the habit of healthy eating.

 



»ROLE OF MICRONUTRIENTS DISCUSSED IN HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE OUTREACH PROGRAM 24.09.20

In continuation with the ongoing online awareness generation programs to celebrate Poshan Maah, today's topic included an extensive discussion on the role of micronutrients and their importance. Adolescent girls were the target audience. The webinar gave an insight about the role of Micronutrients especially Vitamin A, Iron , Zinc and Iodine and Rich dietary source of particular micronutrient.

 

Principal Prof Sudha Katyal encouraged all the viewers to follow healthy eating practices to avoid onset of any micronutrient deficiency to ensure good health and immunity 

 



»AWARENESS GENERATION SESSION ON ANEMIA AT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE 23.09.20

In context of Covid-19 pandemic , the celebration was held through an online awareness generation programme based on the theme “ANEMIA”.

The outreach program received a great response by the target audience (adolescent girls and young women), around 50 audience joined the online session from various rural areas of haryana- kharkhari nahar, farukhnagar and district karnal , girls from Delhi Public School malerkotla, Gurgaon and Lord Jesus public school (Gurgaon). 

The session gave an insight on the topic ANEMIA and symptoms. Various schemes – e-raktakosh , scheme for adolescent girls and IFA  and Supplementation – National nutrition anemia and prophylaxis programme were also discussed. Home- cooked iron rich recipes were also presented in the session. 

All the information was demonstrated with help of an e-poster, summarised with videos to make the participants more clear about the insight of topic.

Principal of the college Prof Sudha Katyal urged everyone to help fight anemia is sync with the government's initiative of anemia mukt Bharat. 



»AWARENESS PROGRAM ON PREVENTION OF MALNUTRITION IN CHILDREN AND BREAST FEEDING BY HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE 22.09.20

An online awareness generation outreach programme based on the current theme of Poshan Maah i.e, identification and taking care of malnourished children was organised at Home Science College.

The outreach program received a great response by the target audience, Around 45 lactating mothers and pregnant women joined the online session.

The webinar gave an insight about the importance and benefits of breastfeeding for mother and child and the session included the discussion about importance of early initiation of breast feeding and demo of recipes for lactating mothers.

Principal Prof Sudha Katyal emphasized on the importance of eating healthy and providing adequate nutrition in the first 1000 days of life to ensure a healthy future. 

 



»ONLINE AWARENESS GENERATION SESSION ON COMBATING NUTRIENT LOSS DURING COOKING BY HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE 21.09.20

In today's outreach programme at Home Science College, tips and ways to minimise nutrient losses for cooking were discussed. The program received a great response by the target audience. Around 35 mothers joined the  session and participated actively in the quiz  and during the interaction. The webinar gave an insight about the nutrient losses during different cooking methods and to overcome them to prevent malnutrition. 

The session included  discussion about the loss of nutrients mainly, water soluble vitamins (vit C, thiamine, vitamin B12 etc.) during  washing, cutting, boiling, simmering, roasting, frying and microwave cooking methods and the strategies to combat them, to keep the nutrients intact in the food. The strategies for improving the nutritional value in food was also discussed.  

Principal of the college Prof Sudha Katyal encouraged everyone to follow healthy and safe cooking practices especially during the time of pandemic. 

 



»ONLINE DEMO ON HAND WASHING AND MAKING OF HAND SANITIZER BY HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE 19.09.20

On the occasion of National Nutrition month, 2020  and the OutReach program conducted by Government Home Science College , a demo on hand washing techniques and making sanitizer at home was discussed.

The audience for the session was School Going Children from kashmir and ludhiana. 

The audience was made aware about aim of hand washing techniques, Hand hygiene and proper hand washing during Covid 19 , right way to wash your hands. 

The audience was also educated about Hand Sanitizer. They were informed as to how to use Hand Sanitizer and also  how to make Hand Sanitizer at Home using WHO formula 

Principal Prof Sudha Katyal urged everyone to spread the message on importance of hand hygiene for good health of an individual



»Home Science College Organizes National Webinar On NEP- A Step Towards Atam Nirbhar Bharat 18.09.20

Government Home Science College organized National Webinar on New Education Policy- A Step Towards Atam Nirbhar Bharat with an aim to promote  entrepreneurship in sync with the college motto Knowledge for service. Professor Nandita Shukla, professor of Education in Punjab University and Dean, International Studies was the  speaker for the event. She  emphasized that the country's new educational policy has a learner centered approach with focus on developing cognitive learning skills of an individual. It is aimed to develop job creators rather than job seekers. It talks on conserving Indian heritage, traditions and values on one side and 21st century futuristic skills on the other side. Linking education to national aspirations is the key objective of this New Education Policy. It  suggests structural changes and  proposed revamping of all aspects from curriculum pedagogy, evaluation  to improvement in regulation and governance in the educational setup of the country. It has the essence of all previous education commissions.The speaker was reminded of the famous Quote of Mahatma Gandhi “ Having Our  Feet Rooted to our  Soul and  Keeping the Windows of Mind Open, which is the essence of this policy. Multidisciplinary education, flexible curriculum, combination of subject  education with vocational education ,starting right from 6th standard with multiple entry and exit options  are some highlights of this policy. She informed that the policy focuses on making India global hub for manufacturing by setting up skill labs like manufacturing of toys in toy labs. The speaker concluded the session by saying that New education Policy can be a game changer if implemented in true sense.
Principal Prof Sudha Katyal expressed her gratitude to the Speaker for the insightful session. She said that New Education Policy is the need of hour and it will play a crucial role in transforming Indian Education System.

 



»WEBINAR ON NUTRITION DURING COVID 19 BY HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE 17.09.20

In the continuing celebrations for Poshan Maah, Home Science College in collaboration with Fortis Hospital, Mohali organised a webinar on Importance of Nutrition During CoVid 19

Dt Sonia Gandhi, Head    Fortis Hospital gave an enlightening talk on the importance of healthy eating and especially immunity boosting foods during the time of this pandemic.

She emphasized upon the need to maintain hygiene and sanitation especially while dealing with food supplies. She urged everyone to follow the protocol during these times of wearing masks and regular washing of hands. She also discussed about the importance of not just maintaining physical health, but to be mentally and emotionally healthy as well.

Principal Prof Sudha Katyal encouraged the participants to stay safe and follow your aspects of eating a balanced and healthy diet during these tough times



»OUTREACH PROGRAM ON IMPORTANCE OF HERBS BY HOME SCIENCE STUDENTS 16.09.20

On the occasion of National Nutritional Month, 2020 and the Outreach programs being conducted by the Government Home Science  College,Chandigarh,  the topic for todays discussion was "Health Benefits Of Spices". The speaker for the day was Rajinder Kaur, student of M.Sc. Foods and Nutrition(3 Sem). The highlights of the event were certain nutrients present in spices, their health benefits and easy ways how we can include them in our daily life. Some basic tips were discussed to avoid over consumption of medicines and immunity boosting decoctions were explained via video. The audience for the session was Adolescent girls and housewives from Patiala and Ludhiana.

Principal of the college Prof Sudha Katyal encouraged everyone to include as many spices as possible in their daily diet to ensure good immunity and health.



»ANEMIA MUKT BHARAT ADVOCATED IN HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE 14.09.20

In the series of online awareness generation programmes, for celebrating national nutrition month, a session was organized by Govt Home Science College college. Topic for the session was Nutritional Anemia and Healthy Eating. The target audience was adolescent girls and adult females. An online lecture was delivered in which various types of nutrition related anemias were discussed.

The audience was made aware about the risk factors , signs , symptoms of nutritional anemia .They were also educated about the food sources to be included in diet to prevent the problem . 

Principal of the college Prof Sudha Katyal emphasized on the importance of eating iron rich foods in sync with the initiative of anemia mukt bharat.
